AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 °C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm2 provided ceramics samples with the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)–O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger FeOFe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - Metastabile nanopowder ZnTiO3 pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa was submitted to conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931oC for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. Same compacts were heated with two-step sintering schedule with maximal 912oC and isothermal holding at 896oC, for approximately the same holding times as with isothermal. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most prominent samples. Sintered specimens microstructure showed differences introduced during last sintering stage by two heating schedules.

AB - Multiferroic materials simultaneously possess two or more ferroic orders, and enable a coupling interaction between them. Multiferroic bismuth manganite is known as a material that exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties making it interesting for various technological applications. Unfortunately, preparation of BiMnO3 is not possible by conventional solid state reaction and BiMnO3 has been synthesized from the mixture of oxides only at high pressures (>40 kbar). The aim of this work was to synthesize BiMnO3 (BMO) without additional heating or application of high pressures. Nanocrystalline single-phased BMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis directly from the highly activated constituent oxides, Bi2O3 and Mn2O3, in a planetary ball mill. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM with EDS analysis, HRTEM and magnetization measurements. All the samples were found to be tetragonal perovskite with P4mm crystallographic group. The broad maxima reflections of BMO samples can be ascribed to an amorphous/disordered phase. HRTEM micrographs give clear evidence of core-shell structure with amorphous shell around the nanocrystalline BMO particles. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar to that of a soft ferromagnet. The magnetic properties of the obtained BMO powders were found to change as a function of milling time in a manner consistent with the variation in the nanocomposite microstructure.

The crystal structure and the amount of crystalline and amorphous phases in the powder as a function of the milling time were determined with XRPD using Rietveld refinement. BMO perovskite formed directly from highly activated nano-sized constituent oxides after 240 min of milling and subsequently grew during prolonged milling. The morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the powder were investigated by SEM and TEM. A clear ferromagnetic transition was observed at T C ~66 K for a sample milled for 240 min and increased with milling time. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar to that of a soft ferromagnet. The magnetic properties of the obtained BMO powders were found to change as a function of milling time in a manner consistent with variations in the nanocomposite microstructure.

According to analysis of XPRD results BiMnO3 obtained after milling for 240 min has a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.9230 Å, c = 3.920 Å and a crystallite size of 16.8 nm. The cumulative energy introduced into the system during milling for 240 min was 401 kJ/g. It was found that the obtained powders were agglomerated. Corresponding agglomeration factors were calculated from the results of BET and particle size distribution analysis. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Multiferroic bismuth manganite (BiMnO3) is known as a material that exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties making it interesting for various technological applications. Unfortunately, preparation of BiMnO3 is not possible by a conventional solid-state reaction and it can form only from mixture of oxides at high pressures (>40 kbar). In this work single-phased BiMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill. A mixture of Bi2O3 and Mn2O3 was intensively milled in air atmosphere, using stainless steel vials and balls. All rights reserved.",

AB - A series of gamma-Bi2O3 phases doped with Zn, Si, Pb and Fe was prepared by mechanochemical treatment of corresponding oxide mixtures with a nominal composition 6Bi(2)O(3) (.) MOx (MOx = ZnO, SiO2, PbO) and 12Bi(2)O(3) (.) Fe2O3 using high-energy ball mill. The products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction technique. Influence of milling conditions: milling time from 5 min to 10 h, milling medium (steel or ZrO2) and injected mechanical power on unit-cell parameters and crystallinity of products, as well as on reaction kinetics are investigated and discussed.

AB - ZnO varistors with non-linearity coefficients reaching 50 and low values of the leakage current (approximately 0.01 A/m2), were obtained by a method referred to as `direct mixing of constituent phases'. The method is based on sintering of a mixture of the constituent phases with the following compositions: ZnO phase uniformly doped with Co2+ and Mn2+; intergranular phase: γ-Bi2O3 stabilized with Mn2+ or Zn2+; spinel phase: Zn1.971Ni0.090Co0.030Cr0.247Mn0.090Sb0.545O4. As proved, the obtained varistors are composed of the same phases as those introduced into the system. The influence of composition as well as milling and sintering parameters on the varistor characteristics were investigated. Some varistor powder mixtures were intensively milled before sintering. As a result, high density ceramics with highly homogeneous microstructure were obtained after sintering.

AB - TiO2 and ZnO thin films were prepared by dip-coating method from TiCl4, and Zn(NO3)(2) precursor solutions, respectively. Basic parameters of the process such as temperature of thermal treatment, heating and cooling regimes, and number of cycles required for obtaining uniformly coated substrates were defined. Microstructural analysis showed that at least 20 cycles must be repeated to obtain a completely covered substrate and continual film of TiO2 at 823 K. In the case of TiO2 film thermally treated at 723 K even n=30 was not enough to produce a continual film. Preparation of continual film of ZnO requires at least n=22, at 773 K. Microstructure and roughness of the prepared films were investigated by AFM method.

AB - Nanostructured powders, with crystallite size of ZnO, spinel and γ-Bi2O3 phases below 100 nm, were obtained by the mechanical attrition of ZnO varistor powders prepared by method of directed synthesis of the constituent phases. Powders were further sintered and the resulting varistors showed excellent electrical characteristics with the non-linearity coefficients reaching 45, low values of the leakage current and density reaching 99% of the theoretical value.
