abstract = "A conclusion that quietly imposes itself is that Milovan Glišić was one of
the most peculiar and versatile creative personalities, who spent eighteen years
at the National Theatre in Belgrade, from 1881 to 1898. As a dramatist he put
together its repertoire, which was his most valuable work, as it represented the
synthesis of everything that could be seen in European theatres’ repertoire. As a
person with a good command of French, Russian and German, he translated 34
plays – 19 from French, 8 from Russian, 6 from German and 1 from English. Some
of his translated plays were included in the repertoire several times, resulting in
Glišić’s name being associated with 41 references. He had been striving to strike a
balance between contemporary foreign and national plays in the repertoire, and
he stimulated playwrights to produce new plays. He wrote two comedies himself
– Podvala (The Hoax) and Dva cvancika (Two Farthings), which were immensely
popular, as can be inferred from the box office revenue records. He was well
versed in a number of languages, an impassioned translator and one of the first
who introduced us to the works of the nineteenth-century writers – Balzac (The
Shagreen Skin), Gogol (Dead Souls), Goncharov (Oblomov), Tolstoy (War and
Peace). He had a vast inside knowledge of how the theatre works, on which subject
he wrote notable texts for the journals Otadžbina (Fatherland) and Pozorište (The Theatre). One of his greatest contributions to the history of the National Theatre
in Belgrade is his Repertoar i prihodi Narodnog pozorišta u Beogradu 1868–1894
(Repertoire and Revenue of the National Theatre in Belgrade 1868–1894), which
was only to be released in 2008 on the occasion of celebrating a 100th anniversary
of the writer’s death., Милован Глишић је представљен као један од најдуговекијих
делатника Народног позоришта у Београду, који је у току непуне две деценије обављао послове драматурга, преводиоца, творца репертоара и аутора
двадесетпетогодишњег Репертоара НП у Београду (1868–1894). Преводио је
с француског, руског и немачког језика, укупно тридесет и четири драмска
дела, од којих су многа била више пута на репертоару. Огледао се и у писању
комедија: Подвала и Два цванцика. Био је изузетан познавалац функционисања позоришта и о томе писао прве текстове те врсте. И поред изузетних
доприноса преводилаштву, позоришном раду, конципирању репертоара, до
сада није исказана релевантна оцена његовог значаја.",
