AB  - The study examines the model of the establishment of a Serbian political, spiritual and scriptural center in Serres during three decades of Serbian rule (1345–1371). The model is considered against two circumstances: historical – the anathema of the Serbian ruler, patriarch and archbishops, and geographical – the proximity of Serres to Mount Athos and the Bulgarian Empire. There are three important focuses of the work: the Four Gospels of Metropolitan Jacob, the books donated to the Sinai monks and the activity of monk Isai in the circle of secular and ecclesiastical aristocracy in Serres. By pointing out certain characteristics of the book of Metropolitan Jacob, the unique program of the Serbian ruler and the Serbian church is sketched. Although exceptional individuals dedicated to literature stayed in Serres, the connection with the scriptoria on Mount Athos and those in the central part of the Serbian Empire raises the question to what extent we can speak of the existence of a developed Slavic scriptorium in Serres.

The same scribe's signature is observed in the manuscripts Dečani № 127 and № 119, which are also connected by the typology and a similar dating. The goal is to compare the distinctive features of both manuscripts and the handwriting of the 14th century scribes who contributed to the copying. In conducting this research, we will use a new descriptive scientific model, created and tested by the research project team.

AB  - In this paper we would like to examine the circumstances in which Serbian literacy reached the territory of the medieval principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia towards the end of the 14th and during the 15th century. The role of the hesychast Nikodim Grčić in that process is considered once again, particularly in light of the spiritual, cultural and artistic influences of the Mount Athos, where this spiritual mentor was closely associated with Isaiah. An insight into the structural, linguistic, and orthographic features of the Tetraevangelion connected with the territory of Wallachia reveals the physiognomy of its first scriptorium. Special attention is subsequently paid to reviewing the manuscripts of the Serbian rulers and ecclesiastical dignitaries that were connected in the 15th century with the books of the Moldavian monastery of Neamţ. In that context, relations will be examined between certain Serbian and Moldavian manuscripts in order to offer a more distinct picture of the role of Serbian literacy in the development of Moldavian literacy.

AB  - A survey of the copying centres from the twelfth to the seventeenth century gives a general outlook of literary production in the Serbian-Slavonic language. The writing of old Serbian books was to a large extent conditioned by working circumstances in individual scriptoria over the broad territory of Serbian spirituality. It has been proved that the works of skilled scribes  and  exceptional  manuscripts  were  the  hallmarks  of  certain  scriptoria.  The  appear-ance of travelling scribes and the travelling of individual codices from one to another spir-itual centre underline the continuing and lively connections between distant scriptoria. In the  general  spiritual  atmosphere  which  linked  like  a  network  the  distant  territories  of  the  Serbian  language,  activities  of  learned  and  eminent  enthusiasts  shaped  unique  writing  tra-ditions. Their cultural accomplishments are confirmed by a prominent manuscript heritage, a permanent inspiration to scholars from different areas. Although previous research has in-vested  great  effort  in  shedding  light  on  mediaeval  scriptoria,  further  studies  are  eagerly  ex-pected.  As  Dimitrije  Bogdanović  says,  only  after  the  activity  of  each  scriptorium  has  been  reconstructed it will be possible to know what was kept in old libraries in order to complete the knowledge about the entire Serbian manuscript heritage.
