AB - The efficiency of photo-oxidation of pollutants catalysed by semiconductors is still limited for real-world applications due to several drawbacks, such as a) insufficient absorption of visible radiation, which predominates in solar spectrum, b) rapid free electron to hole recombination, c) small surface area, built from equilibrium crystallographic facets with low adsorption capacities and d) photo-corrosion. The present study disclosures new mesoporous heterostructures, built from exfoliated lepidocrocite-like ferrititanates and TiO2 (anatase)-acetylacetone charge transfer complex, capable of reducing free electron-to-hole recombination rate through a robust charge separation and sensitive to the visible light spectrum. The synthesis route is based on soft-chemistry and low temperature calcination at 300 °C. Two different partially pillarized heterostructures, denoted as HM-1 and HM-2, have been synthesized. It was observed that the heterostructure HM-1 was four times more active toward photocatalytic degradation of NO gas in comparison to the benchmark photocatalytic material P25. The lower activity of the heterostructure HM-2, comparable to that of P-25, was attributed to the high value of Urbach energy that indicates high number of defect sites within energy band-gap of the constituent semiconductor components. [Ti] anatase/[Ti] ferrititanate mol ratio might also play a role in photocatalytic efficiency. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Polyamide 11 (PA11) composites reinforced with pristine and silanized titanate nanotubes (TTNT) were prepared using twin-screw melt compounding. A better dispersion of silanized TTNT in PA11 caused increase of crystallinity and decrease of the long period of PA11 lamellar structure. The increase of glass transition (∼33%) and decomposition temperature (∼3%), as well as, the improvement of Young's, storage and loss modulus (of 17, 27 and 17% respectively) was achieved in the composites loaded with the highest content (2 wt%) of nanofiller silanized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), owning to a chemical interaction established at the silanized TTNT-PA11 interface. Contrary to it, lack of compatibility at the pristine TTNT-PA11 interface led to drop (up to 20%) in the strength at break in these composites.

AB - Efficient methods for the synthesis of layered structure nanomaterials (nanosheets), their complete exfoliation (delamination) into the layers of atomic thickness and design of organic-inorganic nanohybrids present important stages toward development of improved polymer-based nanocomposites and pillared heterostructures with potential application in purification technologies such as photocatalysis. A rapid and efficient exfoliation process of protonated layered ferrititanates with lepidocrocite-like structure and formation of organic-inorganic nanohybrids is performed starting from the nanosheets composed of only a few host layers and nanometric lateral dimensions using quaternary ammonium compounds. These nanosheets are initially synthesized from a highly abundant precursor through an alkaline hydrothermal route. We demonstrated that dimethyldioctadecylammonium cations strongly interact with the exfoliated single host layers (0.75. nm thick) providing thermal stability (~ 500 °C) to the as-prepared organic-inorganic nanohybrid over the temperature range commonly applied for the processing of thermoplastic nanocomposites. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

AB - Recently, polymer composites reinforced with low fractions of thermomiotic nanoceramics have triggered a lot of research. The efforts have been focused on achieving considerable reduction of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of polymeric materials without deterioration of other physical properties. In this context, polyethylene (PE) composites reinforced with different loads of Al2Mo3O12 nanofillers (0.5–4 mass %) were fabricated by micro-compounding. To enhance the interfacial interaction between the two components, chemical functionalization of Al2Mo3O12 was performed with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) prior to micro-compounding. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry demonstrated the successful grafting of VTMS on the Al2Mo3O12 surface. The composites showed strongly decreased CTEs, up to 46 % reduction for loadings of 4 mass % compared with neat PE, suggesting intimate filler–matrix interactions. The variation of CTEs of the composites in terms of the filler fraction was successfully described by Turner’s model allowing calculation of the bulk modulus of monoclinic Al2Mo3O12 (13.6 ± 2.6 GPa), in agreement with the value obtained by an ultrasonic method. The thermal stability of the composites was improved, although the addition of functionalized fillers decreased the degree of crystallinity of the PE to a small extent. The Young’s modulus and yield strength of the composites increased from 6.6 to 19.1 % and 4.0–6.0 %, respectively, supporting the existence of strong filler–matrix interactions, contributing to an efficient load transfer. Finite element analysis of thermal stresses indicated absence of plastic deformation of the matrix or fracture of the nanofillers, for a 100 K temperature drop.

AB - One of the major challenges in the development of nanocomposites based on a polymer matrix and highly polar ceramic nanofillers is the lack of the compatibility between these two components. In order to improve the chemical interaction between titanate nanotubes (TTNT) and polymer matrix, such as nylon 11,3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was grafted onto TTNT. The effects of the TTNT chemical composition i.e. sodium content and solvent type on the grafting silane efficiency were thoroughly studied through CHN elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area and zeta potential measurements. The present study brings evidences supporting aqueous ethanol as more efficient reaction medium for TTNT functionalization with APTES, independent of the sodium content of nanotubes, when compared with pure water. It is also worth noting that within aqueous ethanol medium, TTNT with low sodium content are more efficiently grafted than TTNT with high sodium content. Successful APTES grafting decreases concentration of the hydroxyl groups on TTNT surfaces and enables its future application for the fabrication of nylon 11 nanocomposites.

AB - In order to develop new nanosized filler compatible with the thermoplastic polymer Nyion-11, trititanate nanotubes (TTNTs) were synthesized by standard alkaline hydrothermal treatment of a TiO2 anatase powder in 10 M NaOH at 120 DC for 24 h. After the synthesis, the as-obtained nanopowder was washed differently (either with water or HC1), in order to prepare TTNTs with high and low sodium contents. Chemical functionalization of TTNTs was performed with 3-minopropyltriethoxisilane (APTES) coupling agent using two different reaction media (water and an ethanol/water mixture) with the aim to improve the bonding between inorganic hydrophilic fillers and hydrophobic polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential and CHN elemental analyses were used to elucidate the grafting mechanism of APTES at TTNTs surface. The obtained results shown that: APTES coupling agent is bounded covalently to the TTNTs surface (Ti-O-Si bond was identified after deconvolution of the IR bands at 800-1000 cm-1); grafted amount of APTES is almost independent of the reaction media; protonation of-NH2 groups shift the isoelectric point from pH 2.4 to pH 6.6; TTNTs kept their original size and shape after silanization.
