AB - Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are called 'designer solvents' due to various structural variations and the benefit of tailoring their physicochemical properties. For industrial applications of DESs it is crucial to know their physical and thermodynamic properties such as density, viscosity, and refractive index. These properties were measured for three lecithin (LEC)-based DESs with glycerol (G), triethanolamine (TEOA), and oleic acid (OLA) as functions of temperature. The viscosity was fitted by both Arrhenius-type and Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher equations. The density, viscosity, and refractive index of tested DESs decreased with the increase in temperature. The LEC:G DES exhibited the lowest density at all tested tempe-ratures. This DES was selected as a cosolvent in the ethanolysis of cold-pressed black mustard (Brassica nigra L.) seed oil catalyzed by either calcined or non-calcined CaO. The reaction was carried out in a batch stirred reactor under the following conditions: the temperature of 70 °C, the ethanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1, and the amount of DES and CaO of 20 and 10 wt.% (to oil), respectively. The presence of DES accelerated the reaction, while the separation of the final reaction mixture phases was faster.

AB - The catalytic activity of the walnut shell ash was investigated in the biodiesel production by the sunflower oil methanolysis. The catalyst was characterized by the TG-DTA, XRD, Hg porosimetry, N2 physisorption, SEM, and Hammett method. In addition, the effects of the catalyst loading and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio on the methyl esters synthesis were tested at the reaction temperature of 60 °C. The walnut shell ash provided a very fast reaction and a high FAME content (over 98%). As the reaction occurred in the absence of triacylglycerols mass transfer limitation, the pseudo-first-order model was employed for describing the kinetics of the reaction. The catalyst was successfully reused four times after the regeneration of the catalytic activity by recalcination at 800 °C.

AB - Ten organic solvents (triethanolamine, diethanolamine, ethylene glycol, methyl ethyl ketone, n-hexane, triethylamine, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, glycerol, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane) were applied as cosolvents in the CaO-catalyzed ethanolysis of sunflower oil performed in a batch stirred reactor under the following reaction conditions: temperature 70 °C, ethanol-to-oil mole ratio 12:1, initial catalyst concentration 1.374 mol·L -1 and amount of cosolvent 20 % based on the oil amount. The main goals were to assess the effect of the used cosolvents on the synthesis of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) and to select the most efficient one with respect to the final FAEE content, reaction duration and safety profile. In the absence of any cosolvent, the reaction was rather slow, providing a FAEE content of only 89.7±1.7 % after 4 h. Of the tested cosolvents, diethanolamine, triethanolamine and ethylene glycol significantly accelerated the ethanolysis reaction, whereby the last two provided a final FAEE content of 93.1±2.1 and 94.1±1.5 %, respectively, within 0.5 h. However, because of its safety profile, triethanolamine was selected as the best cosolvent for the ethanolysis of sunflower oil catalyzed by calcined CaO.

AB - Triethanolamine was applied as an efficient „green“ cosolvent for biodiesel production by CaO-catalyzed ethanolysis of sunflower oil. The reaction was conducted in a batch stirred reactor and optimized with respect to the reaction temperature (61.6-78.4 °C), the ethanol-to-oil molar ratio (7:1-17:1) and the cosolvent loading (3-36 % of the oil weight) by using a rotatable central composite design (RCCD) combined with the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal reaction conditions were found to be: the ethanol-to-oil molar ratio of 9:1, the reaction temperature of 75 °C and the cosolvent loading of 30 % to oil weight, which resulted in the predicted and actual fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) contents of 98.8 % and 97.9±1.3 %, respectively, achieved within only 20 min of the reaction. Also, high FAEE contents were obtained with expired sunflower oil, hempseed oil and waste lard. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to understand the changes in the CaO phase. The CaO catalyst can be used without any treatment in two consecutive cycles. Due to the calcium leaching into the product, an additional purification stage must be included in the overall process.

AB - The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 700 °C, and 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 900 °C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2–2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 700 °C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

AB - Milling of cyanoacetamide and acetoacetic ester as reactants, in the presence of KOH as the catalyst and ethanol as a viscous control agent (VCA) was performed in a planetary ball mill with the goal of investigating the effect of mechanochemical treatment for the synthesis of 3-cyano-6hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone at room temperature. The mechanochemical synthesis was performed under various milling parameters, i.e. milling time up to 4 h, number and size of balls, angular velocity as well as molar ratio of reactants and the amount of catalyst. The obtained product was characterized by m.p., UV, IR and NMR data. It was fond that the dominant process parameter is the milling time while others are of less importance. The highest isolated yield after milling was up to 56%. The combination of milling and aging increase yield over 60%.

AB - The effects of two different mechanically activated kaolins, AKV (61% kaolinite, 14% quartz and 16% mica) and AKG (51.6% kaolinite and 40.6% quartz) on the compressive strength of cement composites and microstructure of pastes were investigated. Composite mixtures, in which 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced by AKV or AKG, were prepared with w/b of 0.5, and exposed to different curing conditions (ordinary curing for 28 days and autoclaving). Factors affecting microstructure were investigated on pastes by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) analyses, Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and Scanning electron microscopy with Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). AKG composites exhibited higher compressive strengths under both curing conditions. Positive autoclaving effects on strengths were predominantly pronounced at the higher cement replacement levels. Comparison of the autoclaved and ordinary cured paste microstructure, revealed more intensive pozzolanic reaction during autoclaving conditions (CH content near zero) and higher total porosity. The negative effect of hydrogarnet on the strength was compensated by the formation of the crystalline tobermorite. Obtained results revealed that mechanically activated kaolin, with high content of quartz, could be a promising pozzolanic addition, even at high cement replacement levels (30–50%), especially when autoclaving curing conditions were applied. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Kaolin from a Serbian deposit, having a high content of mica and quartz, disordered kaolinite and a high specific surface area, was used to prepare metakaolin (MK). The calcination at temperatures of 700 °C or 750 °C for 30 to 180 min resulted in MK having high pozzolanic activity, but also significant aglomeration of particles. In order to disperse aglomerates, MK was milled, which resulted in increased pozzolanic activity and reduced particle size. The effects of MK and additionally milled metakaolin (MKmill) on the composite strengths and microstructure of the pastes were compared. We prepared and investigated composites in which ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with 10% to 50% of MK or MKmill, as well as the representative samples of paste for determination of microstructure.

Compressive strengths higher than the control were obtained for composites having up to 30% of MK and up to 40% of MKmill, respectively. Increase of composite strengths with MKmill was more pronounced at lower cement replacement levels (10% and 20%).

Compressive strength of composites containing agglomerated MK were satisfactory, which suggests that milling of MK, as well as purification of kaolin, may not be necessary.

AB - Environmental concerns and sustainable development require increased replacement of cement. Most of previous studies have shown that the compressive strength of cement-based composites is maximized with a 20% content of metakaolin. We investigated composites prepared by replacing ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with 30 to 50% of metakaolin (MK) and addition of appropriate amount of hydrated lime, which were ordinary cured for 2, 28 or 90 days. Hydration products and microstructure of the pastes were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). MK was produced by calcination of kaolin from a Serbian deposit, which contained a high level of impurities.

Replacement of OPC with 30% of MK achieved 28 days compressive strength equivalent to that of the control mix. Higher replacement levels, 40% and 50%, combined with the addition of hydrated lime, achieved satisfactory relative strengths of 94% and 87%, respectively. The positive contribution was particularly pronounced after 90 days for a composite containing 50% of MK. The results clearly showed a possibility of obtaining composites having acceptable compressive strength with reduced cement content in accordance with environmental and sustained development requirements.

AB - Choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with different amides or polyols as hydrogen bond donors were tested as cosolvents in the ethanolysis of expired sunflower oil catalyzed by either calcined or non-calcined CaO. These cosolvents promoted the ethanolysis by a successful activation of non-calcined CaO, which was ascribed to the CaCO3 and Ca(OH)2 dissolution from the surface of the solid catalyst particles. With both calcined and non-calcined CaO, the polyol-based solvents gave higher fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) content than the amide-based solvents. Among the amide-based DESs, choline chloride:urea (ChCl:U) was the most efficient activator of non-calcined CaO. Choline chloride:ethylene glycol (ChCl:EG) and choline chloride:propylene glycol (ChCl:PG) were more efficient than choline chloride:glycerol (ChCl:G) even with non-calcined CaO. However, ChCl:G might be more suitable than the others since the use of glycerol, a by-product of the ethanolysis, could reduce the overall biodiesel production costs. FTIR and XRD analyses of the used and separated CaO were performed in order to get more insight into the catalytically active phase(s). Also, the mechanisms of the CaO activation in the presence of the DESs were considered. The phase separation of the reaction mixture was faster in the presence of the DESs. Since ChCl:U and ChCl:G DESs are nontoxic, biodegradable, biorenewable and “green” solvents and provide the elimination of the calcination step of CaO, thus reducing the overall process costs, the non-calcined CaO catalytic systems with these DESs are recommended for further optimization. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The continuous biodiesel production from soybean oil was carried out under the subcritical condition of methanol with MnCO3/Na-silicate as a heterogeneous catalyst. The transesterification rate was first investigated in a set of experiments performed in a batch autoclave at 448 K using methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 18:1 and various catalyst loadings (5, 10 and 20 wt% based on the oil mass). The results from these experiments, as well as the experimental data and the appropriate kinetic model recently reported in the literature were used for designing a packed bed tubular reactor (PBTR), a main unit of the pilot plant with the capacity of 100 L of biodiesel per day. The pilot plant was constructed and tested under various operating conditions. The first 11 h of the pilot-plant operation was realized in the tubular reactor packed with inert glass beads (i.e. without the catalyst) in order to analyze the effect of the non-catalyzed subcritical biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) production. Then, glass beads were replaced with a mix of MnCO3/Na-silicate catalyst particles and glass beads, and the catalytic biodiesel production was continuously run under the subcritical methanol condition for 85 h. Two mass balance tests during the continuous pilot plant operation were performed. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Тhe MnCO3/Na silicate (Mn/Na/Si mole ratio of 4.65:1:1.65) catalyst in the form of solid particles with diameter of 0.99–1.99 mm was used as a catalyst for transesterification of soybean oil in batch autoclave at different conditions: 388–468 K, methanol-to-oil mole ratio 12:1–30:1, catalyst amount based on the mass of oil 0–12.5 %. The complete triacylglycerols (TAG) conversion and high yield of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) was obtained after 1 h at 458 K, methanol-to-oil mole ratio 30:1 and 10 % of catalyst. Kinetics of transesterification process was analyzed by three models: the simple first order irreversible reaction rate, as well as two more complex models recently reported in literature. The catalyst reuse in transesterification process was tested and the average values of 99.0 % of TAG conversion and 97.5 % of FAME yield were obtained after 8 consecutive runs. Different techniques were used to characterize fresh and used MnCO3/Na silicate catalyst. The determined amounts of leached Na (<500 ppm) and Mn (<20 ppm) in biodiesel phase implied that the homogeneous-heterogeneous process influences the catalyst selectivity, whereby leached Na enables the complete transformation of TAG to FAME.

AB - The effects of thermally (MK) or mechanically activated kaolin (AK) on the compressive strength of mortars and microstructure of pastes were investigated. Mortar mixtures, in which 10%, 20% and 30% of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced by either MK or AK, were prepared (w/b of 0.5) and ordinary (age 2, 28 or 90 days) and autoclave cured. Hydration products were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) analysis, while microstructure was investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP).

MK substitution increases the compressive strength of ordinary-cured mortars, as a result of the higher content of reactive silica that caused more pronounced pozzolanic reaction, as well as by effective refinement of their pore structure. Positive effects on the compressive strength could be achieved up to 30% substitution of OPC by MK. The OPC substitution by AK resulted in lower strengths of ordinary-cured mortars, compared to both MK mortars and reference. Higher specific surface area and finer particles of AK were insufficient to compensate, through filler effect, lower pozzolanic reaction and additional negative influence of the kaolinite presence. The highest compressive strength was obtained for mortar with 10% of AK (relative strength of 94%).

In comparison to the reference, autoclaved MK and AK mortars, exhibited lower compressive strength, as a consequence of increasing the hydrogarnet formation, instead of tobermorite. The highest strength was achieved for mortar with 10% of AK.

AB - Kaolin from a Serbian deposit, characterized by high content of impurities, such as mica and quartz, disordered kaolinite and high specific surface area, was subjected to thermal and mechanical activation on a large scale. Activations were carried out with a goal to investigate the effects of applied methods on the chemical, structural and morphological changes that occurred in the kaolin, and their influence on the pozzolanic activity. The changes were monitored using XRD, FTIR, TG/DTA, PSD, BET and SEM analyses. Pozzolanic activity was evaluated by determination of the 7-day compressive strength conducted on the lime mortars.

The results showed that mechanical activation by milling the kaolin for 20 h in the conventional horizontal ball mill was competitive for obtaining pozzolana as thermal activation. Pozzolanic activity of thermally activated kaolin was mainly influenced by formation of metakaolin. Combined effects (such as significant specific surface area increase, as well as partial kaolinite and complete mica phase amorphization) were dominant in pozzolanic activity of mechanically activated kaolin.

AB - Calcium-containing perovskites CaTiO3, CaMnO3, CaZrO3 and Ca2Fe2O5 were synthesized by calcination of mechanochemically treated stoichiometric mixtures of CaCO3 and either TiO2, MnO2, ZrO2 or Fe2O3 powders. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a pure single perovskite phase for all four samples after calcination. This study proved that the pure perovskite phase exhibited low or no catalytic activity at 60 °C for the methanolysis of sunflower oil. However, at 165 °C FAME yield of more than 90% was reached after 2 h using CaTiO3, CaMnO3 and CaZrO3 as catalyst. Contrary to inactive pure perovskites at 60 °C, the CaTiO3 and Ca2Fe2O5 samples containing a very small amount of “free” CaO also showed methanolysis activity at 60 °C. This fact can be used to explain some contradictory statements reported in literature related to the perovskites as catalyst for biodiesel synthesis at mild temperatures.

AB - In the present work, calcium diglyceroxide (CaDG) was synthesized by mechanochemical treatment of CaO dispersed in glycerol, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Hammett indicator method for base strength determination. The obtained CaDG was tested as a catalyst in the methanolysis of sunflower oil under different working conditions: catalyst amount, agitation speed, temperature and methanol to oil molar ratio. The main advantage of CaDG used as a catalyst in methanolysis is related to the initial rate of methanolysis. According to many previously reported data in literature the mass transfer resistance controls the overall rate of methanolysis, but it is not observed with CaDG used as catalyst. Recently developed kinetic model that describes the complex methanolysis process was successfully applied for this system and model parameters were determined, supporting the explanation of the physical effect of the CaDG catalyst on the reduction of mass transfer resistance and increasing the rate of methanolysis. The absence of mass transfer rate at the beginning of process is a consequence of the nature of the CaDG, which is adsorbed at the droplet interfaces between methanol and oil leading to the formation of fine dispersion of these two immiscible liquids.
