AB - Production of high-performance nanocomposite materials obtained from unsaturated polyester resin, based on products of the waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) recycling, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes is presented. Di-hydroxy functional glycolysates, synthesized by catalytic depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with propylene glycol, were used for the unsaturated polyester resin synthesis. The structure of the obtained glycolysis product and unsaturated polyester resin were characterized by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and by acid, iodine, and hydroxyl value. Nanofillers were prepared by direct and two-step amidation of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Direct amidation with diallylamine produced multi-walled carbon nanotube-diallylamine reactive nanofiller. Two-step modification with diamines: hexamethylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine gave multi-walled carbon nanotube-hexamethylenediamine and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine nanofiller, respectively, whose amidation with methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acids gave multi-walled carbon nanotube-hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid nanofiller, respectively. Influences of vinyl functionalities on mechanical properties of nanocomposite were analyzed from tensile strength (σb), elongation (ϵb) and Young's modulus (E) determination. An increase of 97.4, 119 and 139% of σb was obtained for nanocomposites with addition of 0.25 wt.% of diallylamine, p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid multi-walled carbon nanotubes, respectively. Short techno-economic analysis, performed on the basis of fixed and variable unsaturated polyester resin production costs, showed satisfactory potential profit, which could be realized by the implementation of the presented technology. © The Author(s) 2016.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60°C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30°C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37°C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - In this study, we have performed functionalization of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) via Bingel reaction and investigated influence on the addition of covalently functionalized GPNs on the structural changes of the poly(methyl methacrylate). Preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites with functionalized GNPs has been accomplished by drop casting method of dissolved PMMA mixed with modified graphene nanoplatelets dispersed in a N-methyl-1-pyrrolidone. Functionalizaton of graphene has been achieved under the conditions of Bingel reaction, which implies introduction of diethyl malonate on the graphene surfaces through the cyclopropane ring formation. Introduction of the cyclopropane ring on to the surface of graphene does not significantly affect the initial structural properties of graphene nanoplatelets, allowing better dispersible properties due to interaction of covalently attached diethyl malonate groups with the polymer chains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elemental analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the addition of diethyl malonate via Bingel reaction on the surface of GNPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used to provide information on the morphology of functionalized GNPs. Prepared nanocomposites have been characterized by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The changes regarding glass transition temperature have been monitored with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

AB - In this paper, the mechanical properties of polymer matrix phase (modulus of elasticity, yield stress and work hardening rate) have been determined using combined methods such as nanoindentation, finite element modelling and artificial neural networks. The approach of neural modelling has been employed for the functional approximation of the nanoindentation load-displacement curves. The data obtained from finite element analyses have been used for the artificial neural networks training and validating. The neural model of polymer matrix phase of poly-l-lactide (PLLA) polymer in hydroxyapatite (HAp)/PLLA mechanical behaviour has been developed and tested versus unknown data related to the load-displacement curves that were not used during the neural network training. Based on this neural model, the nanoindentation matrix phase properties of PLLA polymer in HAp/PLLA composite have been predicted. © 2010 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

AB - The objective of this study is to investigate and compare methods of nanosilica coating with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy (MEMO) silane using supercritical carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide-ethanol mixture. Characterization of grafted silane coupling agent on the nanosilica surface was performed by the infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The d50 value and particle size distribution were determined by laser particle size analyzer (PSA). The operating parameters of silanization process at 40 °C, such as the silica/silane weight ratio, the presence of ethanol, and the pressure, were found to be important for the successful coating of silica particles with minimum agglomeration. The results indicate that presence of ethanol in high-pressure carbon dioxide plays an important role in achieving successful deagglomeration of coated nanoparticles. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that dispersion of the silica particles in the PMMA matrix and interfacial adhesion between silica particles and polymer matrix were enhanced, when silica nanoparticles treated with silane under high pressure of carbon dioxide and ethanol were used for the nanocomposite preparation. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. AB - Nanosilica/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites are used to improve the mechanical properties of neat PMMA polymer. In order to obtain superior mechanical properties, it is essential to achieve good bonding between the SiO2 nanoparticles and the PMMA matrix, which is typically achieved by coating silica nanoparticles with silane coupling agents. In this study, conventional and supercritical coating methods were investigated together with their influence on the mechanical properties of the obtained nanosilica/PMMA composites. The results indicate advantageous properties of nanosilica modified in the supercritical phase of carbon dioxide and ethanol in terms of particle size distribution, amount of coated silane, and dispersion in the PMMA matrix. Careful dispersion of the starting silica nanoparticles in ethanol at low temperatures in order to obtain a nanosilica sol plays an important role in deagglomeration, dispersion, and the coating process. The resulting nanosilica/PMMA composite containing nanoparticles obtained by supercritical processing of the nanosilica sol showed an increase in hardness by 44.6% and elastic modulus by 25.7% relative to neat PMMA, as determined using the nanoindentation technique. The dynamic mechanical analysis reveals that addition of nanoparticles as nanosilica sol and nanosilica gel enhances composite storage modulus by about 54.3 and 46.5% at 40 °C. At the same temperature, incorporation of modified silica nanoparticles with conventional method leads to an increase of 15.9% for the storage modulus, probably due to a large silica particle size and lower silane content in this sample. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

AB - In order to obtain more accurate properties after compaction of hydroxyapatite (HAp)/poly-L-lactide (PLLA) composite, high-resolution measurement of mechanical properties method is proposed to determine the properties of each phase separately, leading to information that are valuable for the development of new materials as well as for predictive modeling purposes. The PLLA polymer processing conditions used in hot pressing of the composite strongly influence final mechanical properties of the material in the solid state. Since the aim was to measure PLLA material properties, acceptable findings could only be made using unconstrained, cured in situ nanoindentation tests. A finite element analysis of the in situ indentation experiment was performed to determine required size of plain polymer area, needed for indentation test, which would minimize the particle influence on the matrix elastic behavior.

AB - The influence of particle geometry and volume fraction on the mechanical properties of a hydroxyapatite (HAp) particulate reinforced polymer (poly-L-lactide and collagen) matrix composite was investigated through finite-element (FE) analysis. For cube-shaped (near sharp and curved corners and edges) embedded particles, it was found that the maximum stress concentration factor (SCF) in the matrix decreases with an increase of the HAp particle volume fraction (PVF). The maximum stress concentration in the matrix material containing a spherical inclusion has low sensitivity to the PVF. The compressive Young's modulus was found to be slightly dependent on particle shape, but very sensitive to PVF. Calculated stiffness values from FE analysis were compared to the experimental results available in the literature and with predictions from the Halpin-Tsai model.
