AB - Silver iodide particles were synthesized in the process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using aqueous solutions of thermodynamically stable silver iodide clusters as precursor. The AgI particles were collected in solvents of different polarities such as water, 2-propanol and toluene. In order to study influence of solvent and aging time on the morphological and structural properties of the AgI particles ultra-filtration was employed to isolate solid material from solution. The scanning electron microscopy showed that morphology of the AgI particles is different for different solvents. The AgI particles with hexagonal/triangular shape were obtained in water and toluene, while in 2-propanol hollow spheres were formed. The X-ray diffraction analysis, besides wurtzite hexagonal and zinc blende cubic phases, revealed appearance of tetragonal high-pressure AgI modification for sample collected in toluene and for sample aged in 2-propanol. The aging in toluene induced transformation of all three modifications into single phase with one preferred orientation. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Eu-doped silica nanoparticles with different concentrations of europium (3% 6%and 15at.%) were prepared by a hydrothermal procedure. Light scattering measurements of the silica colloids as well as TEM microscopy, revealed a narrow size distribution of the particles, ranging from 5 to 10 nm. X-Ray diffraction showed that all the powders were amorphous. Magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature measurements showed a behavior typical for Eu3+ ions, with a plateau below 60K, and an increase of the mass susceptibility with Eu concentration. The splitting of zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field-coled (FC) susceptibility branches increased with the europium concentration, indicating the presence of interparticle interactions. At temperatures below 40K, a contribution of paramagnetic impurities obeying the Curie law was observed. Heat treatment of the powders at 823K and 1073K increased the magnetic susceptibility. The appearance of a small peak at 70K indicated the presence of small quantities of ferromagnetic EuO in the powders after heating.

AB - Calciumhydroxyapatite thin films have been prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis deposition on titanium substrate. The surface morphologies of the films formed at different deposition times were analysed by using SEM. The mechanism of the films formation was investigated in relation to the observed film morphology during the first stages of its formation, as well as to its consolidation to the final form. The chemical homogeneity of the synthesized films was determined by using EDS analysis, whereas the phase composition was determined by using XRD measurements and IR spectroscopy. The roughnesses and the thicknesses of the films were analysed by using surface profiler method. The continuous morphology films are obtained only for samples deposited more than 1.5 h.

AB - LiMn2O4 powders were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. By varying the cooling conditions. two samples of powders were obtained: quenched in water (Q) and spontaneously cooled to room temperature (SC). The crystal structure of the as-prepared powders was revealed by X-ray powder diffraction. Structure refinements confirm that SC sample crystallizes in Fd3m space group, while Q sample crystallizes in I4(1)/amd space group. Particle morphology was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation were examined in galvanostatic regime.

AB - Theoretical model describing the mechanism of droplet formation and structure of hollow TiO2 spheres prepared by the process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, using colloidal solution consisting of the 2.5-nm TiO2 nanoparticles as a precursor, is developed. The proposed model quantitatively defines each line in the size distribution spectrum. The mechanism of droplet formation and/or particle genesis is fully determined by harmonization between the physical fields inherent to the system as the consequence of its physical characteristics: external, e.g., ultrasound, and internal. AB - Cytotoxicity testing, as a standard assay for toxicity of dental materials, is useful for initial biocompatibility evaluations. In vitro test of calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA) with established laboratory cell line showed multiple partitions of cells proving good biocompatibility properties of this new material. Further research should be directed towards simulation of in vivo conditions and animal experimentation to obtain sufficient data before its clinical application in humans.

In vitro test of calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA) with established laboratory cell line showed multiple partitions of cells proving good biocompatibility properties of this new material. Further research should be directed towards simulation of in vivo conditions and animal experimentation to obtain sufficient data before its clinical application in humans.",

AB - Powder mixture of Ca(OH)(2)-P2O5-CaF2 were milled in planetary ball mill. A carbonated fluorhydroxyapatite, FHA Ca-10(PO4)(1-y)(CO3)(y)(PO4)(5)(OH)(2-2x1)(F)(2x1) was formed after 5 h of milling and carbonated fluoroapatite Ca-10(PO4)(1-y)(CO3)(y)(PO4)(5)(F)(2) was formed after 9 h of milling. Complete transformation of the carbonated form of FA into then single phase of FA occurred after 9 h milling and thermally treating. The various experimental techniques like X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Transmission Electron Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the synthesized powders and to postulate reaction mechanisms steps- transformations of reactants involved. AB - Submicrometer spherical particles of mullite powder were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of emulsion and solutions, using tetra-ethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) or silicic-acid and Al(NO3)(3) . 9H(2)O as initial compounds. Crystallization of mullite phase was determined by differential thermal (DT), thermogravimetric (TG), infrared (IR), and x-ray analyses. The synthesis of mullite from TEOS emulsion occurs by crystallization of gamma-Al2O3 (or Al, Si-spinel) from the amorphous phase and its subsequent reaction with amorphous SiO2, as well as by crystallization of pseudotetragonal mullite below 1000 degrees C and its subsequent phase transformation into orthorhombic mullite, in the powders produced from silicic acid solutions, synthesis of mullite occurs only by crystallization of gamma-Al2O3 between 900 and 1000 degrees C and its further reaction with amorphous SiO2 between 1100 and 1200 degrees C. Particle formation mechanism depended directly on the initial emulsion or solution preparation. i.e., on the phase separation in the emulsion and on the silicic-acid crosslinking conditions.
