Influence of mechanical activation on structural and electrical properties of sintered MgTiO3 ceramics

AB  - The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the MgCO3-TiO2 system. Mixtures of MgCO3-TiO2 were mechanically activated for 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes in a planetary ball mill and after that sintered at 1100°C for 1h. XRD analyses were performed in order to give information about the phase composition and to determine a variety of microstructure parameters using Scherrer's method. Also, the effect of tribophysical activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Electrical measurements were performed in order to determine electrical properties of sintered samples. Our conclusions are that the sample activated for 120 min showed the best electrical properties ( ε r=23.86, Q=233, ρ=0.38) and exhibited the best sinterability.

AB  - Ceramics for electronics play an important role in several industrial sectors. The most common way of producing these ceramics is through sintering processes from powders. The powders can be treated by mechanical activation; during this process they are subjected to grinding and the grain size is reduced. Crystal structure is distorted and changed; in some systems, the process leads to chemical reaction and formation of new compound. In this paper we explain the influence of mechanical activation on sintering kinetics in system MgCO3-TiO2. Mechanical activation of the starting powder mixture was performed by milling during different time intervals within 120 min in a planetary ball mill device with ZrO balls and vessels; ball to powder mass ratio was 40:1. Powders were compacted and sintered isothermally at 1100°C for 180 min. X-ray powder diffraction was used for observing the evolution of magnesium-titanate phase during milling. For specimens synthesized in such manner, microwave dielectric properties were measured, namely dielectric loss (tg δ), specific electric resistance (ρ) and relative dielectric permittivity (εr).

AB  - Molybdenum powders were produced by the rotating electrode process in helium atmosphere. The electrode diameter was 0.01 m and the angular velocity was 524 and 2094 rad/s, respectively. The increase of the angular velocity was followed by the decrease of mean particle size, which was 690 and 193 μm for the indicated angular velocities, respectively. The particles obtained were spherical, and their flow rate and apparent density was high. Theoretical cooling rates were calculated and were in the range 104–106 K/sec for particle diameters 800 μm — 50 μm. Typical powder solidification structure consisted of equiaxed grains and dendrites whose sizes were related to particle size.
