AB - The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of low heating temperatures with two different retention times to optimize the process for obtaining nanosized hydroxyapatite material that can possibly be used in the fields of biology and pharmacy. Nanosized hydroxyapatite was successfully obtained by wet chemical precipitation. The annealing of the material performed at 300 oC with two different retention times i.e. 3 and 6 hours in air atmosphere. Low annealing temperature with extended retention time was selected in terms to reduce energy consumption. FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm characteristic vibrational bands of hydroxyapatite samples, and presence of carbonate bands of hydroxyapatite annealed for 3h and 6h. X-Ray powder diffraction analysis were used to examine phase composition, determine the size of unit cells and crystallite sizes, and SEMEDS methods were used to obtain particle size and arrangement also grain growth morphology and confirmed the presence of calcium, phosphorous oxygen and carbonate peaks. The results show that different retention time has influence on particle growth as well as unit cell parameters and crystallite sizes changes of hydroxyapatite material.

AB - Hybrid geopolymers represent a new class of composite materials formed by incorporating organic polymer into a geopolymer matrix. The properties of hybrid geopolymer depend on the addition of organic phase and the starting raw material composition (concentration of NaOH in alkaline activator, Si/Al mass ratio and solid/liquid mass ratio). In addition to these relevant parameters, this paper examines the synthesis conditions of these materials through the influence of the type, amount and manner of adding organic modifiers (commercial epoxy resins and 3- (methoxyl) propyl methacrylates) on forming the structure with significantly reduced pore distribution and decreased pore size, which exhibits good mechanical properties. The purpose of this research is to define the optimal conditions of the hybrid geopolymers' synthesis through the examination of relevant parameters. Expected improvement of mechanical properties was confirmed through values of compressive stength. Characterization of hybrid geopolymer composities was performed by XRD analysis, DRIFT spectroscopy and SEM analysis.

AB - In a field of green chemistry, environmental protection and ecological conservation of the environment there are ways to come up with new and more advanced materials using on the one hand natural, recyceled or waste materials and on the other hand syntethic materials obtained by using green chemistry synthesis procedures. The aim of this paper was to synthesize and characterize Brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials and to examine the possibility of using these materials in the fields of construction, cement industry, as well as in environmental protection as potential adsorbents. Initial materials which were used for geopolymer synthesis was Brushite (CaHPO4·2H2O) which was obtained by solutionprecipitation reaction form acetate solutions and Kaolinite clay from Rudovci deposit (Serbia). The obtained mixture powders were dissolved in a strong alcaline solution with addiction of water glass. Produced geopolymers was cast into mods and preserved for 28 days. The starting materials and the synthesized Brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer material were examined using XRPD, FTIR SEM-EDS methods. The contact angle measurements were made to test hydrophilic and wettable properties of synthesized material.

AB - In order to optimize process of geopolymerization, the investigation of thermodynamic parameters of alkali activators are important. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of thermodynamic parameters (density, viscosity, refractive index and sound velocity) of alkaline activators on mechanical properties (compressive strength and hardness) of synthesized geopolymer samples. Geopolymers were synthetized by alkaline activation of metakaolin, having the density 2.524 g/cm3, using the activators at elevated temperature of 60 oC for two days. Based on the obtained results thermodynamic properties has been selected to predict the properties of materials. Four series of alkaline activators have been used. Activators remarked as AA1, AA2, AA3 and AA4 present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M respectively. The volume ratio of Na2SiO3 and aqueous solution of NaOH was the same for all samples. Densities, viscosities and refractive indices of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60 oC of process of geopolymerizations. The values of density, viscosity and refractive index decrease with temperature increase over the investigated temperature range. Increasing molarity of alkali activator solutions, the sound velocity of activators is changed. For sample AA2 the values of sound velocity rises from room temperature to 45 °C and then begins to decrease while for the sample AA3 sound velocity grows until 30 °C and then starts to decrease with further increasing of temperature. Four series of geopolymer samples GP1 to GP4 were synthesiyed using the constant ratio of solid and liquid phase. FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS methods were used for physicochemical further characterization of geopolymer samples.

AB - Geopolymers (GP) were successfully synthesized from metabentonite (MB), metadiatomite (MD) and metakaolinite (MK). Characterization of their phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. A SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel, and it is significantly different from the micrographs of the other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. A considerable amount of unreacted particles, as well as the presence of pores in the geopolymer matrix of GPMK and GPMD, indicate an incomplete reaction in the system. Aluminosilicate inorganic polymers, geopolymers, are quasi solid electrolytes which possess a high electrical conductivity at room temperature in relation to materials of similar chemical composition. The highest conductivity was found for the sample obtained from GPMK, amounting to 2.14 × 10–2 Ω–1cm–1at 700 ºC. The corresponding activation energies of conductivity for this sample amounted to 0.33 eV in the temperature range of 500–700 ºC. The geopolymer synthesized from metakaolin has good ionic conductivity values, which recommends it for use as an alternative material for an SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell).

AB - The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the hydrophobicity of geopolymers, new alumino-silicate materials and the influence of Si/Al ratio on their surface properties. Contact angle measurement (CAM) as reliable indicator of hydrophobicity was determined for synthesized geopolymers using water and ethylene-glycol as reference liquids. Geopolymers were synthesized from various precursors: kaolin, bentonite and diatomite. Characterization of phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. Contact angle measurements confirmed that the geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin are the most porous, which can be explained by the smallest Si/Al ratio. The maximum value of contact angle and free surface energy (110.2 mJ/m2) has been achieved for geopolymer synthesized by diatoms (GPMD). SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel and is significantly different from the micrographs of other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK.

AB - Considering geopolymers as inorganic polymers, they are actually amorphous network of interlinked silicate and aluminate groups, so they could be prospective ceramic precursors for materials with defined dimensions obtained by casting and firing, but not from powder processing. In this research, the starting material is metakaolin, which was obtained by calcining domes tic kaolinite clay. Initially, four series of alkaline activators of NaOH and sodium silicate have been used. Activators present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M. The prepared geopolymer slurries were cast into the designated near shape at room temperature and after that at 60oC. In fact, the post-synthesis curing process (28 days) has an important role in the obtaining good characteristics of geopolymers. Densities, viscosities and refractive index of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60oC of process of geopolymerizations. Based on the obtained results of investigated parameters have been selected to predict the properties of materials. All geopolymer samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS analysis and Raman spectroscopy providing complementary and valuable information of the investigated materials. This route of ceramics production has advantages associated with producing an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean new technology of geopolymer materials.

AB - The goal of this research was to produce an environmental friendly, energy saving inorganic polymer using a metakaolin as a precursor. The clean technology which conserve the natural environment was employed for the production of these materials. The used kaolinite is clay obtained from Rudovci, Lazarevac, Serbia. Physicochemical properties of kaolin were investigated in previous work by Nenadović et al. [1]. Metakaolin (MK) was prepared by calcining kaolinite at 750 °C for 1 h. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of polymerization of metakaolin is investigated. The alkaline solution was prepared from sodium silicate and 2M, 4M, 6M and 8 M NaOH (analytical grade) (volume ratio Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1.6). The inorganic polymer (IP) samples were formed from metakaolin and the four different alkaline solution (solid/liquid ratio was about 1), which were mixed for 15 min and then left at room temperature for one day. Finally, the mixture was kept in a sample drying oven for 2 days at 60 °C. Process of aging time of inorganic polymer samples at 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days is followed by some analytical methods (XRD, FTIR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for characterization of metakaolin and metakaolin based inorganic polymers. After 28th days when the aging time were finished, on the surface of the samples were used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis almost of all inorganic polymer samples revealed their amorphouslike structure with the position of an amorphous halo in the range 18°-32°, which indicates short range ordering of the reference sample with crystalline admixture of SiO2 (α-quartz, ICSD 89). The FTIR spectra of all samples shows a strong peak at ∼1000 cm−1 which is associated with Si–O–Si asymmetric stretching vibrations and is the finger print of the geopolymerization [2,3]. The FT-IR results show a shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X bands as the molarity of activator increasing during polymerization process, where X can be Si or Al. Both methods and XRD, as well as FTIR, show greater sensitivity to monitoring the effects of molarity, than the aging time within the same molarity to structural changes in inorganic polymer. SEM micrographs (Fig.1) showed a denser matrix, and a lower content of unreacted metakaolin particles due to increasing of molarity of NaOH. Structural reorganization of inorganic polymer samples occurs during the curing or aging in accordance with a polymerization mechanism.

AB - The paper presents chemical and structural analysis of geopolymer materials which are obtained by alkali-activated calcined clay (metakaolin) originated from Serbia under strictly defined conditions. Characterization of the metakaolin and geopolymers molecular structure has been done using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The paper presents the possibility of obtaining geopolymer structure and differences in chemical and structural characterization of these materials taking into account the concentration of NaOH as a variable parameter. The results of MALDI analysis of metakaolin and synthesized geopolymer structures using various matrix system: 2,4,6 trihydroxyacetophenone (THAP), α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic, 2,6 dihydroxyacetophenone and laser desorption/ionization, have shown that THAP matrix is the most appropriate for analysing these aluminosilicate materials.

AB - There is potential use of red mud for synthesis of inorganic polymeric materials through a geopolymerization process as an alternative in the sectors of construction and building materials. By introducing of inorganic and organic modificators of microstructure (calcium hydroxide, bifunctional epoxy resins, or various types of alkoxylanes) during the geopolymer synthesis the enhanced values of ductility and strength can be obtained. Research was performed on alumosilicate material (red mud and metakaolin) and alkali activator raw mixture with defined quantity of modificator. The best sinthesys conditions were identified. Post-synthesis curing also play important role in obtaining of good-performing geopolymers. Characteristics of geopolymers were defined by measuring of compressive strength, N2-physisorption, as well as by SEM analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition the lower value of zeta potential was identified as the assisting factor for the specific structure domains formation (within the certain range of pH) accompanied by the high compressive strength.

AB - This article presents the results of the compositional, structural and morphological study of geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin and an alkali activator. The study involved the investigation of the structural and chemical properties of the geopolymer, in addition to thermally treated geopolymers up to 600 and 900 °C. The precursor of the geopolymer, and the geopolymer samples before and after the thermal treatment, were investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analysis. The corrected average value of the ratio of silicon and aluminum in the geopolymer samples (SiGP:Al) is about 1.46, which suggests that the obtained geopolymer samples represent a mixture of roughly equal amounts of sialate and sialate-siloxo units. Annealing the geopolymer samples at 600 °C decreases the amount of Si-ONa bonds and induces the cross-linking of polymer changes. At the same time, other sodium containing alumino-silicate phases are created. The thermal treatment at 900 °C leads to a considerable reduction of oxygen and particularly sodium, followed by significant morphological changes i.e. formation of a complex porous structure. Additionally, a new semicrystaline phase appears. Both XRD and XPS results imply that this new phase may be nepheline and it is plausible that this phase begins to nucleate at temperatures below 900 °C.

AB - Both environmental control and appropriate measurement results present basis for the quality protection of geospatial elements. Providing environmental monitoring activities and creating control network is the obligation of each state, whereas local communities provide observation and control of air quality, water quality, waste quality, soil quality, vegetation and land cover control, etc. This has been the reason for the analysis of vegetation of the municipality of Jagodina in Serbia. By processing satellite images, data on the sources of pollution and polluting materials of the vegetation have been discovered. These include spot (stationary), linear (mobile and stationary) and surface (stationary and mobile) sources. While processing satellite images by the Idrisi software, we have acquired results that indicate certain vegetation modifications (images obtained through infrared spectral imaging). Results obtained through remote sensing indicate the necessity to define adequate vegetation monitoring, to complete a register of pollutants, to set up information system and define ways of data presentation in order to manage a single, complete register of environmental pollutants in the municipality of Jagodina.

AB - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the Cs+ ions sorption on natural minerals clinoptilolite. The analysis of clinoptilolite and clinoptilolite with adsorbed Cs+ ion was con- ducted by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and gamma spectrometry. The specific activity of naturally occurring radionuclides in clinoptilolite was determined by gamma spectrometry by using the HPGe semiconductor detector. Obtained activity concentrations ranged from 49 Bq/kg to 810 Bq/kg for 40K, 5.7 Bq/kg to 10 Bq/kg for 238U, 5.8 Bq/kg to 70 Bq/kg for 232Th(228Ac), and the presence of artificial radionuclides was not detected (137Cs < 0.02 Bq/kg). The study of the thermal decomposition of raw clinoptilolite and Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite by differential thermal analysis is presented in this paper. The activation energy of the reaction phase transformation of raw clinoptilolite is 156.7 kJ/mol, while Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite is 121.7 kJ/mol. The lower value of activation energy reaction of the phase transformation Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite indicates that Cs which is adsorbed destabilizes the crystal structure of clinoptilolite and thus facilitates the transition to the amorphous state.
