AB - Filtration and sorption are vital techniques in water purification, effectively eliminating impurities and microorganisms from the water.
AB - The widespread use of chlorine synthesis devices, such as HIPOGEN P, has revolutionized water disinfection by generating active chlorine from common salt directly at the point of use. Employing electrolysis with table salt, water, and electricity, the HIPOGEN system ensures efficient and affordable water treatment in various settings, including individual households, urban and rural water systems, and industrial applications [1-2]. Filtration and sorption are vital techniques in water purification, effectively eliminating impurities and microorganisms from the water. This process involves various technologies like sedimentation, sand filtration, lime softening, and activated carbon filtration, ensuring the removal of a wide array of impurities. Biological filtration facilitates the conversion of organic and inorganic matter, resulting in the production of clean water, carbon dioxide, and an increase in microorganism mass. Nitrification and denitrification play crucial roles in the oxidation and reduction of ammonia, respectively, contributing to the removal of nitrogen compounds from water. Ion exchange processes aid in water softening and demineralization, effectively eliminating undesirable dissolved substances through the exchange of ions between the solution and ionic mass. Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis employ semipermeable membranes to effectively remove dissolved substances, making them valuable in water treatment and environmental protection within the chemical engineering sector.

AB - The conductivity and the state of the surface of supports are of vital importance for metallization via electrodeposition. In this study, we show that the metallization of a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) can be carried out directly if the intermediate graphene oxide (GO) layer is chemically reduced on the CFRP surface. Notably, this approach utilizing only the chemically reduced GO as a conductive support allows us to obtain insights into the interaction of rGO and the electrodeposited metal. Our study reveals that under the same contact current experimental conditions, the electrodeposition of Cu and Ni on rGO follows significantly different deposition modes, resulting in the formation of three-dimensional (3D) and free-standing metallic foils, respectively. Considering that Ni adsorption energy is larger than Ni cohesive energy, it is expected that the adhesion of Ni on rGO@CFRP is enhanced compared to Cu. In contrast, the adhesion of deposited Ni is reduced, suggesting diffusion of H+ between rGO and CFRP, which promotes the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and results in the formation of free-standing Ni foils. We ascribe this phenomenon to the unique properties of rGO and the nature of Cu and Ni deposition from electrolytic baths. In the latter, the high adsorption energy of Ni on defective rGO along with HER is the key factor for the formation of the porous layer and free-standing foils. © 2022 The Authors. AB - The discovery of nanostructured materials led to ground-breaking findings and significant technological advancement in recent years and is therefore attracting continuous attention from both, academia, and industry for a variety of structural and functional applications [1]. To design nanostructured materials with new functionalities, we combine electrochemical and electroless chemical synthesis with structural studies on different length scales including transmission electron microscopy. The possibility to produce nanostructured metals containing nanoscaled twins, both growth twins and deformation twins, is considered as a promising approach for the synthesis of novel high-performance materials in recent years [1]. Unfortunately, the phenomenon of twinning occurs only in certain metals, such as copper and until recently, it seemed impossible to make aluminium with a high density of grown-in twins. In the present work, we demonstrate the use of electrodeposition as synthesis method to make Al layers with a high density of genuine growth twins [2]. This unexpected result demonstrates a versatile and cost-effective nanoengineering technique for the formation of pure Al layers with a high density of twins. The atomic structure of a twin in aluminium is shown in a transmission electron microscopy image (cf. Fig. 1). In high density, these symmetric lattice imperfections can yield a material that shows good electrical properties, high hardness and good deformability. In addition, we show that electrochemical synthesis approaches can be used to create high surface area functionalized foams and ordered nanostructures for potential sensing and energy-related applications [3-6].

AB - A catalytic coating composed of a mixture of RuO2 and Pt nanocrystals was prepared by a thermal procedure on a titanium substrate and used for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol. The adsorption of the intermediate CO, formed by methanol oxidation on Pt nanocrystals, depended on potential and the coating composition. An increase in the RuO2 content decreased the rate of methanol dehydrogenation and increased the rate of oxidation of the strongly bound intermediate COad. This caused a decrease in the maximum coverage of Pt nanocrystals with COad and a shift of the rapid linear drop in COad coverage to more negative potentials.

abstract = "A catalytic coating composed of a mixture of RuO2 and Pt nanocrystals was prepared by a thermal procedure on a titanium substrate and used for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol. This caused a decrease in the maximum coverage of Pt nanocrystals with COad and a shift of the rapid linear drop in COad coverage to more negative potentials.",

AB - Nanostructured Ni-Fe-W-Cu alloy powders were electrodeposited from an alkaline ammonium citrate solution on a titanium cathode. Powder particles were dendrite- and cauliflower-shaped. The dendritic particles had a high density of branches made up of interconnected globules. XRD analysis showed that the powder contained an amorphous matrix and FCC nanocrystals of the solid solution of Fe, W and Cu in Ni. As the deposition current density increased, the mean nanocrystal size decreased, and the mean value of internal microstrain and the total weight percent of Fe and Ni in the alloy increased. The powders deposited at higher current densities exhibited higher magnetization. During annealing at temperatures up to 460 °C, the powders underwent short-range ordering, which caused an increase in magnetization, whereas at temperatures above 460 °C, the magnetization decreased due to the formation of large FCC crystalline grains.

AB - The technical development of civilization is conditioned by the increasing number of devices and apparatus that surround us, which we are most often unable to substantially understand the principles of their operation. As a result, such devices are most often incompletely or even incorrectly used, or not all are used in optimal parameters and in all the functions for which they are designed. Unfamiliarity with the essence of the operation of pumps and compressors results in many engineers not knowing how to correctly select the type of pump and compressor for particular operating conditions, ie fluid transport. The consequence of poor selection of these devices is the increased energy consumption for their operation, the load on the network where the fluid flows, the high or low pressure at the desired points along the installation, reduced utilization, etc. Poor selection also entails dysfunctional operation of other devices that depend on the operation of pumps and compressors, resulting in a poor quality product or service provided by that equipment For the above reasons, an apparatus has been made that demonstrates the principle of operation of pumps and compressors in a simple manner. The apparatus visually presents the principle of operation of the pumps and compressors and demonstrates in a simple manner how electricity is converted into the energy of the pump impeller and then converted into the potential, static and dynamic energy of the fluid over which it is operated.
This paper shows that the measured H-Q curves are in good agreement with the theoretical Bernoulli equation. The functionality and application of Bernoulli's equation and its detailed analysis are best demonstrated on the apparatus. The apparatus is intended for all those who need to know properly the technical characteristics of pumps and compressors and how these characteristics can be measured.

AB - The corrosion of the transport tank materials made of stainless steel 316Ti is investigated in a solution containing 12–15% of the commercial sodium hypochlorite solution. Using the electrochemical techniques, weight loss measurements, and optical microscope, it is shown that corrosion occurs due to the metastable pitting. It is proposed that formed metal oxides corrosion product could catalyzed chemical decomposition of hypochlorite solution to oxygen, which provokes the positive shift of the corrosion potentials into the region of metastable pitting.

AB - Due to the development of industry and population growth in recent years, there are problems related to industrial wastewater that needs to be addressed in an environmentally friendly and economical way. All wastewater from plants, regardless of how it was generated, contains harmful substances that may have a certain degree of toxic impurities and must be treated if its quality does not meet the legal requirements. The purpose of wastewater treatment is the removal of harmful substances, which reduces the degree of its pollution, and at the same time achieves a certain economic and environmental effect. This technical solution ensures the optimization of the wastewater treatment process of the Ammunition Factory in Uzići. Wastewater is purified by a precipitation process using calcium oxide to remove colloidal substances and heavy metals. Most of the pollutants are of organic origin and their removal is performed by applying advanced oxidation processes using ozone and ozone in combination with ultrasound in order to achieve water quality that complies with legal regulations. Advanced oxidation processes are the most efficient methods for removing and degrading poorly soluble pollutants from wastewater. The purification process is optimized in terms of the technological process, concentration, treatment time and the amount of oxidizing agent applied. The degree of water pollution with organic compounds is determined on the basis of measurements of HPK, BOD and the concentration of heavy metals (lead, iron, chromium, copper, zinc, aluminum).

AB - An active coating, composed of a mixture of nanocrystals of RuO2 with the rutile structure and nanocrystals of metal Pt, was thermally synthetized on a titanium substrate. Cyclic voltammograms and polarization curves showed that the catalytic activity of the coating for the formic acid oxidation in an acidic solution increased with an increase in the RuO2 content, reaching the maximum value at 50 mol % RuO2. Additionally, further increase in the RuO2 content resulted in a decline of the catalytic activity. The catalytic effect was attributed to a bifunctional mechanism and an electronic effect. The bifunctional mechanism had a dominant role and was based on the fact that Ru–OH species were formed on Ru atoms of RuO2 at more negative potentials than on Pt. Those species oxidized the adsorbed COad and HCOOad—species on adjacent Pt atoms of clusters of metal Pt and thus discharge them to oxidize new HCOOH molecules.

AB - It is the aim of our work to carry out fundamental studies on designing and synthesizing high surface area functionalized foam and ordered structures for their potential sensing and energy related applications. We combine electrochemical synthesis with structural studies on different length scales including transmission electron microscopy. Templates are directly grown by electrodeposition, either by hydrogen bubble formation or by utilizing of ordered structures formed by anodic electrochemical oxidation. [1-3] We employed an elegant approach to obtain open, foam deposits of Ni and Ni alloys, by using electrodeposition at high current densities, to promote hydrogen evolution and bubble templating (cf. Fig.1). [1] In the next step, the high surface area of such materials was funtionalized by Pd utilizing galvanic displacement reaction. Electrochemical testing of the obtained open foam deposits shows promissing catalytical activity for hydrogen evolution in alkaline environments, as well as methanol and ethanol oxidation. In the case of fabrication of nanodendritic Ag simultaneously grown with porous anodic aluminium oxide we accomplished well anchored dendritic Ag nanostructures [2] of long-term stability [3].

AB - It was noticed worldwide that nutrient enrichment and climatic change as global warming and hydrologic changes with periods of more intense droughts strongly affect cyanobacterial growth. Toxigenic cyanobacteria that can produce a wide range of cyanotoxins (hepato-, neuro-, dermatotoxins) are one of the major health risks humans and animals are exposed to via drinking water. Therefore, it is important to remove the cyanobacteria before the water comes to a plant for a final treatment. Results of laboratory examination carried out by National Public Health Institution of Serbia and Belgrade Waterworks and Sewerage shows significant reduction of number of cyanobacteria aftre our treatment with KMnO4. The efficiency of the treament is the highest when concentration of KMnO4 was 25 mg/l.

abstract = "Globalno zagrevanje i porast prosečne temperature doveli su do pojave cijanobakterija posebno u stajaćim vodama. Pokazano je da je KMnO4 efikasno sredstvo za suzbijanje cijanobakterija u koncentraciji do 25 mg/l., It was noticed worldwide that nutrient enrichment and climatic change as global warming and hydrologic changes with periods of more intense droughts strongly affect cyanobacterial growth. The efficiency of the treament is the highest when concentration of KMnO4 was 25 mg/l.",

AB - We show in this work the treatment procedure utilized for cleaning and desnfection of water in water wells of large capacity as in the case of wells of Belgrade Waterworks. The typical examples of such well of large capacity are Reni wells 2 i 4 located 50m from the left bank of the river Sava and in close geometrical distance of confluence of Save river into the Danube. The depth of wells is around 30 m, diamaeter of around 4 m with approximat content of 300 m3 of water. In this work, we demonstate a simple but innovative approach for the disinfection of the well bottom, vertical areas along the well and inner inlets that pump in the water into the well.

AB - The effect of chromium(VI) on the kinetics of disproportionation of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite was established in the solution for the electrolytic production of chlorate. The hexavalent chromium species Cr2O7 2-, HCrO4 - and CrO4 2- present in the solution catalyze the disproportionation reaction. In both the absence and presence of chromium(VI), disproportionation is a third-order reaction with respect to HClO and ClO-P, and a first-order reaction with respect to the hexavalent chromium species. In the presence of chromium(VI) ions, four parallel reactions probably take place in the solution i.e. uncatalyzed disproportionation and three parallel reactions catalyzed by Cr2O7 2-, HCrO4 - and CrO4 2-ions. Most likely, the hexavalent chromium species do not change the sequence of elementary reactions in the disproportionation mechanism but only speed up the rate-determining step through interaction with its reactants. In the chlorate production process, as chromium(VI) concentration increases, the optimum pH which ensures the maximum rate of disproportionation is shifted to an acid environment. This is due to an increase in the concentration of the catalytically most active species HCrO4 - with increasing acidity of the solution. A mathematical model of the kinetics of the chromium(VI)-catalyzed disproportionation of hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid into chlorate was set up. Good agreement was obtained between theoretical and experimental data. © 2018 The Electrochemical Society.

During annealing at temperatures up to 460°C, the powders underwent short-range ordering, which caused an increase in magnetization, whereas at temperatures above 460°C, the magnetization decreased due to the formation of large FCC crystalline grains.

AB - Galvanostatic electrochemical syntheses of poly(aniline-co-(m-aminobenzoic acid)) was performed at graphite electrode at constant current density of 1.0 mA cm-2. Aqueous electrolyte used for synthesis was consisted of: 1.0 mol dm-3 HCl and different amounts of aniline and m-aminobenzoic acid. The presence of the meta positioned carboxylic group in m-aminobenzoic acid had influenced higher co-polymerization potential, different morphology and electrochemical behavior of copolymers compared to polyaniline. Poly(aniline-co-(m-aminobenzoic acid)) obtained from electrolyte with an equal amount of aniline and m-aminobenzoic acid exhibits electrochemical activity in neutral electrolyte which can be related to proton exchange process.

AB - The most common disinfectants for water treatment are based on chlorine and its compounds. Practically, water treatments with chlorine compounds have no alternative, since they provide, in comparison to other effective processes such as ozonization or ultraviolet irradiation, high residual disinfection capacity. Unfortunately, all of chlorine-based compounds for disinfection tend to degrade during storage, thus reducing the concentration of active chlorine. Apart from degradation, additional problems are transportation, storage and handling of such hazardous compounds. Nowadays, a lot of attention is paid to the development of electrochemical devices for in situ production of chlorine dioxide or sodium hypochlorite as efficient disinfectants for water treatment. The most important part of such a device is the electrochemical reactor. Electrochemical reactor uses external source of direct current in order to produce disinfectants in electrochemical reactions occurring at the electrodes. Construction of an electrochemical device for water treatment is based on evaluation of optimal conditions for electrochemical reactions during continues production of disinfectants. The aim of this study was to develop a low-cost electrochemical device for the production of disinfectant, active chlorine, at the place of its usage, based on newly developed technical solutions and newest commercial components. The projected electrochemical device was constructed and mounted, and its operation was investigated. Investigations involved both functionality of individual components and device in general. The major goal of these investigations was to achieve maximal efficiency in extreme condition of elevated room temperature and humidity with a novel device construction involving coaxial heat exchanger at the solution inlet. Room operation of the proposed device was investigated when relative humidity was set to 90% and the ambient temperature of 38°C. The obtained results in such extreme operation conditions reveled that it was possible to obtain required concentration of 0.85% of active chlorine with maximal temperature of outlet electrolyte of 35.3°C, which is within the limits of optimal temperatures.

AB - The fast reaction of forced hydrolysis of iron(III) nitrate in hypochlorite solution at room temperature, leads to the formation of mainly hematite, α-Fe2O3. Successive ion adsorption and reaction (SILAR) is applied to decorate an electrochemically formed TiO2 nanotube electrode. The anodic photoelectrochemical behavior of pure TiO2-NT’s and modified electrodes are investigated in a sulfate containing solution at pH = 9.2. It is shown that such a modification leads to an increase of anodic photoactivity, as well as that at the same current density, the photoelectrochemical cell with a modified electrode operates at a voltage lower by 0.7 V. The band gap and flat band potentials are estimated, and the structure of the band gap and possible charge transfer reactions and mechanism are discussed.

AB - We present the application of newly developed Ag nanodendrites (Ag-ND) grown together with anodic aluminium oxide for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The Ag-ND yield very pronounced SERS using a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). This is confirmed by simulations showing hot spots in the electromagnetic field at the surfaces of the Ag-ND. SERS measurements reusing Ag-ND demonstrate its long-term stability even after one year.
