AB  - In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb2O3 and Er2O3 were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320°C for 4 h. In BaTiO3 doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 μm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 μm. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO 3 ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.

AB  - This paper addresses on investigation the possibility of electrolytic treatment the sulphur acidic waste solution, obtained in the conventional electrolytic copper refining process. Beside the high copper concentration, the high concentration of other metals, in this case nickel, is the main characteristic of these waste solutions. Due to this fact, the copper bearing anodes with non-standard nickel, lead, tin and antimony content were specially prepared for the refining process. Nickel content of all anodes was approximately 7.5 mass%, and the content of lead, tin and antimony was varied. The preliminary results, obtained using the standard electrochemical techniques, have indicated that the copper bearing anodes could be used under the same conditions as well as in the conventional copper refining process. The measurements in constant galvanostatic pulse have pointed out that the all chemical elements from copper bearing anodes were dissolved and only copper was deposited onto the cathode. It was also pointed out that Ni concentration in the base working electrolyte (sulphur acidic waste solution), after 72 h of process, increased to 102 mass% at T-1 = 63 +/- 2 degrees C and up to 122 mass% at T-1 = 73 +/- 2 degrees C, while arsenic concentration decreased to a minimum value.

AB  - Biodegradable microspheres such as those made of poly-D,L-lactide (PDLLA) are widely investigated delivery systems for drugs or antigens. The aim of this study was to examine experimental conditions in order to produce PDLLA microspheres with the best properties for controlled and sustained drug delivery by the modified precipitation method. For this purpose, the following parameters were varied: co-solvent (methanol or ethanol), the concentration of stabilizer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chloroform-to-water ratio and the speed and time of homogenization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and stereological analysis were used to characterize the particles. The average size and morphology of the microspheres varied substantially with preparation conditions from 8.44–1.25 μm. Results showed that the smallest particles were obtained with methanol, 1% PVA and with 10 min of homogenization at 21,000 rpm. Microsc. Res. Tech., 2008. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

AB  - Doped barium-titanate ceramic is attracting much interest for its application as resistors with a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), thermal sensors etc. In this article the influence of Yb2O3, Er2O 3 and Ho2O3 on microstructure development and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 ceramics has been presented. BaTiO3-ceramics doped with 0.5 up to 1 wt % of Yb2O 3, Er2O3 and Ho2O3 were prepared by conventional solid state procedure and sintered up to 1320°C for two hours. Microstructure investigations of doped BaTiO3 was performed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and stereological methods. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature were evaluated by matching model. Special attention has been focused on the study of the changes in morphology, grain and pore size distribution of the sintered specimens and their correlation with the change of capacity, dielectric permittivity and Curie temperature.

AB  - Biodegradable polymers have become the materials of choice for a variety of biomedical applications. In particular, poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles have been studied as a material for drug delivery with the controlled release. In this paper we are describing a simple method for obtaining the system for targeted and controlled delivery of folic acid in the body. Folic acid was encapsulated into the polymer matrix by means of homogenization of aqueous and organic phases. Concentration of folic acid in water was varied in order to obtain nanoparticles with different ratios of poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) and folic acid. The particles were obtained by physicochemical solvent/non-solvent method with polyvinyl pyrrolidone as a surfactant. The obtained particles are non-agglomerated, uniform and with particles size in the nanometer range. The samples were characterized using Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV), Zeta potential measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Stereological analysis. Morphological changes of poly(DI-lactide-co-glycolide) nano-particles containing ascorbic acid during in vitro degradation process

AB  - Poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) powder composed of uniform particles with the mean particle size in the range of 110-170 nm was obtained from commercial granules. Ascorbic acid in different concentrations was encapsulated into the poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) particles. Degradation of the latter in terms of morphological changes in the physiological solution was followed. Within a period of 2 months, the particles completely degrade and all the ascorbic acid is released. The samples were characterized by ultraviolet spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. © 2008 The Authors.

AB  - This paper is covering new, simplistic method of obtaining the system for controlled delivery of the ascorbic acid. Copolymer poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (DLPLG) nanoparticles are produced using physical method with solvent/nonsolvent systems where obtained solutions were centrifuged. The encapsulation of the ascorbic acid in the polymer matrix is performed by homogenization of water and organic phases. Particles of the DLPLG with the different content of ascorbic acid have different morphological characteristics, that is, variable degree of uniformity, agglomeration, sizes, and spherical shaping. Mean sizes of nanoparticles, which contain DLPLG/ascorbic acid in the ratio 85/150%, were between 130 to 200 nm depending on which stereological parameters are considered (maximal diameters Dmax, feret X, or feret Y). By introducing up to 15% of ascorbic acid, the spherical shape, size, and uniformity of DLPLG particles are preserved. The samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, stereological analysis, and ultraviolet spectroscopy.

The preparation of DLPLG submicron spheres poses serious challenges that are not necessarily present when preparing macroparticles. In the present paper, DLPLG powder is produced with chemical method using solvent/non-solvent systems with subsequent centrifugation of the solution. The samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and stereological analysis. By changing the aging time with non-solvent and time and velocity of the centrifugal processing, it is possible to influence on the morphology and uniformity of the copolymer particles. Powder of the series with short aging time with non-solvent and longest time and velocity of the centrifugal processing has smallest particles and highest uniformity, where mean particles sizes were between 150 nm and 230 nm depending on which stereological parameters are considered (D(max), maximal diameters, feret X or feret Y).

biodegradable microspheres as systems for controlled release of medicaments. The major
disadvantage of traditional administration routes of medicaments is the need for frequent
repetition. Encapsulation has been proven to be an effective vehicle for the controlled delivery
of various medicaments. The encapsulation efficiency and release kinetics of the medicaments
have been found to be dependent upon the size of the microspheres synthesized. The aim of this
study was to formulate microparticles from poly-dl-lactide (PDLLA) by modified precipitation
method. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein for encapsulation. The
surfactant polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was incorporated to increase encapsulation efficiency and to
achieve PDLLA spheres with desired size. The main focus was to study the effect of co-solvent
selection (methanol or ethanol), PVA concentration, chloroform-to-water ratio, the speed and
time of homogenization and solvent removal rate on the properties of microparticles. The
average size and morphology of microparticles varied substantially among these preparation
conditions. An increase in stirring rate and time of homogenization and concentration of
stabilizer agent were found to reduce moderately the size of microparticles. Other process
parameters had limited influence on particle size.

The problem is that ascorbic acid easily decomposes into biologically inactive compounds making its use very limited in the field of pharmaceuticals, dermatological and cosmetics. By encapsulating the ascorbic acid into a polymer matrix it is assumed that its chemical instability can be overcome as well as higher, more efficient and equally distributed concentration throughout extended period of time can be achieved. This paper is describing the process of obtaining poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (DLPLG) nanospheres (110-170 nm) using chemical method with solvent/non-solvent systems where obtained solutions have been centrifuged. The encapsulation of the ascorbic acid in the polymer matrix is performed by homogenisation of water and organic phases. Nanoparticles of the copolymer DLPLG with the different contents of the ascorbic acid have different morphological characteristics, i.e. variable degree of uniformity, agglomeration, sizes and spherical shaping. The degradation of the nanospheres of DLPLG, DLPLG/ascorbic acid nanoparticles and release rate of the ascorbic acid were studied for 8 weeks in a physiological solution (0.9% sodium chloride in water).
