AB  - The paper argues that vaccines could be viewed as artifacts which
communicate various social messages and are used as instruments for fulfilling
different sociopolitical goals besides meeting public health needs. It further
suggests that such social, cultural and political influences may have real effects on
the choices of vaccine technologies or vaccine production, and aims to demonstrate
their importance in the area which is normally seen as the domain of objective
science. This is demonstrated by using the example of the locally produced oral
polio vaccine (OPV) in Serbia during the socialist and post-socialist periods in the
country’s history.

рада јесте анализа начина на који популарна култура кроз два различита 
пандемијска наратива пружа поглед на будућност друштвених система 
након појављивања смртоносног обољења, присутног у актуелној стварности колико и у попкултурним наративима. Рад ће указати на пандемијску апокалипсу као окружење нове друштвене стварности, односно 
на карантински систем као критику државне организације и регулације.
AB  - This paper analyzes two popular culture narratives created in the period of the 
COVID-19 pandemic: the movie Songbird, made in 2020, and the TV show The 
Last of Us, from 2023. The main idea of this paper is to analyze the ways in which 
popular culture, through different pandemic narratives, perceives the future 
of social systems after the appearance of the deadly disease, as experienced 
in current reality as well as in pop-cultural narratives. The paper will point to 
the pandemic apocalypse as an environment of a new social reality, that is, the 
quarantine as a critique of state organization and regulation.

AB  - The chapter is divided into three main sections, each dealing with one of the indicated historical periods. The aim in the first section is to demonstrate how local vaccine production was established in relation to global tendencies in the field, and the local context, in the last decades of the nineteenth century. This section explores the interaction of political, economic and socio-cultural determinants that led to the founding of the first Pasteur Institute in the country. Special focus is placed on the first ideas, initiatives, arguments, and motives for launching local production, all pointing to specific conceptions and meanings in that regard. The two sections following deal with the organization of vaccine production at the Torlak Institute, which developed under the influence of political, economic, and socio-cultural factors characteristic for the socialist and post-socialist periods in the country's history. Both sections also consider the changing motives and discourses about national vaccine production that emerged in relation to specific socio-political circumstances in socialist and post-socialist contexts.

AB  - У раду се на примеру источне и западне Европе указује на значај контекстуалних утицаја на одлуке и понашање у погледу вакцина и вакцинације. Контекстуалне детерминанте су идентификоване као важне приликом теоријског уобличавања појма „вакциналне колебљивости“ којиомогућава свеобухватно разумевање разлога због којих у јавности долази до преиспитивања вакцина. Стога је у раду најпре представљена теоријска разрада поменутог концепта, а потом се разматрају контекстуални утицаји на вакциналну колебљивост унутар европског простора како би се уочиле разлике које у том погледу постоје између западне и источне Европе, као и између одређених мањинских заједница и већинског становништва у западноевропским земљама. Показало се да је у свим
случајевима вакцинална колебљивост питање поверења, али је оно више нарушено услед друштвених и политичко-економских искустава која су карактеристична за постсоцијалистички контекст у источној Европи и за услове у којима живе неке мањинске заједнице у западној Европи. Представљање теоријског оквира појма вакциналне колебљивости је засновано на прегледу извештаја Радне групе за вакциналну колебљивост при СЗО, док су за приказ контекстуалних детерминанти узети резултати квантитативних и квалитативних истраживања у различитим европским земљама и прегледи студија које у свом фокусу имају поменуте утицаје.

AB  - У раду се на примеру источне и западне Европе указује на значај контекстуалних утицаја на одлуке и понашање у погледу вакцина и вакцинације. Контекстуалне детерминанте су идентификоване као важне приликом теоријског уобличавања појма „вакциналне колебљивости“ који 
омогућава свеобухватно разумевање разлога због којих у јавности долази до преиспитивања вакцина. Стога је у раду најпре представљена теоријска разрада поменутог концепта, а потом се разматрају контекстуални утицаји на вакциналну колебљивост унутар европског простора како 
би се уочиле разлике које у том погледу постоје између западне и источне Европе, као и између одређених мањинских заједница и већинског 
становништва у западноевропским земљама. Показало се да је у свим 
случајевима вакцинална колебљивост питање поверења, али је оно више нарушено услед друштвених и политичко-економских искустава која 
су карактеристична за постсоцијалистички контекст у источној Европи 
и за услове у којима живе неке мањинске заједнице у западној Европи. 
Представљање теоријског оквира појма вакциналне колебљивости је 
засновано на прегледу извештаја Радне групе за вакциналну колебљивост при СЗО, док су за приказ контекстуалних детерминанти узети резултати квантитативних и квалитативних истраживања у различитим европским земљама и прегледи студија које у свом фокусу имају поменуте утицаје
AB  - Using the example of Eastern and Western Europe, the paper points out the 
importance of contextual influences on decisions and behaviour regarding 
vaccines and vaccination. Contextual determinants have been identified as 
important in theorizing the concept of vaccine hesitancy that allows for a comprehensive understanding of the reasons why the public questions vaccines. 
Therefore, the paper first presents the theoretical elaboration of the aforementioned concept, and then discusses the contextual influences on vaccine hesitancy within the European region in order to showcase the differences that 
exist in this respect between Western and Eastern Europe, as well as between 
certain minority communities and the majority population in some Western 
European countries. In all cases, vaccine hesitancy appears to be a matter of 
trust which has been further eroded by social, political and economic experiences characteristic for the post-socialist context in Eastern Europe and the 
conditions in which some minority communities live in Western Europe. The 
theoretical framework of the concept of vaccine hesitancy is presented according to the report of the SAGE Working Group on Vaccine Hesitancy, while the 
presentation of contextual determinants is based on the results of quantitative 
and qualitative research in different European countries and reviews of studies that focus on these influences

AB  - This paper discusses the different meanings and uses of the term “new normal” by taking 
into account the historical perspective and contemporary use of the term which has reemerged as a consequence of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors focus on 
the processes that through this term define everyday life in pandemic circumstances, 
determined by the need for adjusting and for (re)negotiating and (re)positioning of diverse 
actors in positions of power. The unpredictable outcome of the still-ongoing pandemic 
additionally gives importance to the study of these new circumstances within social sciences 
and humanities, to which this special issue is dedicated to.

AB  - In recent years, Southeastern European region (the Balkans) has seen
a rise in vaccine skepticism due to increasing conflicts between the pro– and antivaccination
stances, primarily with respect to childhood vaccines. Although vaccination
controversies are generally perceived as a global trend, their framings are predominantly
grounded in particular social, cultural, political and economic contexts. This paper will
focus on the immunization issues raised in the post-socialist context of one particular
Balkan state – Serbia. By juxtaposing the medical profession’s framing of vaccine
skepticism with the lay framings of vaccines and immunization, I will examine their
contrasting perspectives and point to the sources of their misunderstanding. These
opposing views will also be contextualized against their respective political, economic,
socio-cultural and historical backgrounds. The paper will hence suggest the possible
determinants of vaccine skepticism in the context of post-socialist Serbia.

AB  - The paper demonstrates interconnection and role of certain social, political and cultural
factors in 1972 Yugoslavian smallpox outbreak. It focuses on a cultural concept of time,
denoted as temporal distance, and discontinuity between pre-socialist and socialist period in
Yugoslavian history, as determinants that shaped the understanding of smallpox, risk
perception and behavior with regard to the disease. The argument is that those two factors
caused forgetting and disregarding of smallpox and thereby contributed to its abrupt
distribution in the beginning of the outbreak. In the end are considered contemporary
epidemiological implications of the reasoning that relies on the cultural notions of temporal
distance and discontinuity.
AB  - Рад показује повезаност и улогу одређених друштвених, политичких и културних
фактора у избијању епидемије великих богиња у Југославији 1972. године. Како је
акценат првенствено стављен на биокултурни аспект ове епидемије, теоријски
приступ је постављен у оквире културне епидемиологије. Тумачење је усмерено на
темпоралну удаљеност, као културну концептуализацију времена, и на перцепцију
дисконтинуитета између два социо-политичка система, оличена у
предсоцијалистичкој и социјалистичкој Југославији. Аргументује се да су ова два
фактора утицала на формирање значења која су приписивана великим богињама,
перцепцију ризика и понашање по питању ове болести, што је заједно узроковало
њено заборављање и занемаривање, те допринело њеном наглом ширењу у почетку
епидемије. У социо-културном погледу, ова епидемија разоткрила је занимљиве
односе између идеологије, социјалне структуре и схватања о неподложности обољењу.
На крају су размотрене савремене епидемиолошке импликације резоновања које се
ослања на културне концептуализације темпоралне удаљености и дисконтинуитета.
