AB - Barium strontium titanate powders with different Ba:Sr ratios were investigated to determine the influence of the initial composition of powder mixture on microstructural properties and sintering kinetics. It was determined that BaCO3 and SrCO3 react differently to mixing, resulting in Ba0.5Sr0.5CO3 in the sample with 80% Ba and different contents of Ba1-xSrxTiO3 in samples with 50% and 20% Ba. In addition, the morphology is also different, with higher Sr content leading to larger particles size and less agglomeration. The different chemical content of the initial powder mixture also has a marked impact on the sintering process: the onset of sintering shifts towards higher temperature with higher Sr content, while the average apparent activation energy of sintering is the highest for the sample with 80% Ba and the lowest for the mixture with 50% Ba. In addition, hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation was observed in parallel with the sintering process, where the position of the phase transition shifts to lower temperatures with an increase in Sr content. This is consistent with the behavior of low-temperature phase transitions of BST. The phase transition was not observed in sintered samples, suggesting that there is a size-dependence of the phase transition temperature. © 2016 Authors.

AB - Crystal structure and morphology of mechanically activated nanocrystalline Fe/BaTiO3 was investigated using a combination of spectroscopic and microscopic methods. These show that mechanical activation led to the creation of new surfaces and the comminution of the initial powder particles. Prolonged milling resulted in formation of larger agglomerates of BaTiO3 and bimodal particle size distribution, where BaTiO3 particles were significantly larger than those of iron-containing phases. Milling times of 210 min and above lead to a significant decrease in temperature of the oxidation of iron in the sample, indicating abrupt change in reactivity. Raman spectroscopy analysis has revealed that activation had a pronounced influence on Fe/BaTiO3 lattice, thereby affecting both the stability of the crystal structure and the phase transition phenomena.

AB - Ferroelectric barium strontium titanate (Ba0.77Sr0.23TiO3), BST, was prepared by solid-state reactions using as the starting compounds powder of barium carbonate (BaCO3), strontium carbonate (SrCO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2–anatase). Non-activated mixtures and mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary ball mill (0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 min) were sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1400 °C for 2 h in air atmosphere. Defects and the effect of the beginning of the sintering process on the microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements (loss tangent and resistivity as the function of frequency XC=f(log ν)) were performed for ceramics sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h. It has been found that mechanical activation can reduce the sintering temperature by around 100 °C, which leads to significant energy savings. Furthermore, activated for 80 min and sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h exhibit the largest density values and have about 36% lower dielectric loss at a frequency of 1 kHz and about 57% at a frequency of 10 kHz than the samples obtained from the initial non-activated powder sintered under the same conditions.

AB - In this article the influence of ball miling process on structure of MgO–TiO2 system, as well as the electrical properties of samples after sintering, was investigated. The mixtures of MgO–TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time period from 0 to 120 min. The influence of mechanical activation and sintering on the lattice vibrational spectra was studied by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. Structural investigations have been performed on produced powders. Nitrogen adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results have been obtained: specific surface area continuously decreased up to 40 min of activation and increased after that, reaching its minimum value of 5.5 m2/g. The Raman spectra of activated powders have shown that anatase modes have been decreasing in intensity and broadening as the time of activation extended. Also, the additional modes attributed to TiO2 II, srilankite and rutile phases started to appear as a consequence of activation. The small differences noticed in the Raman spectra of sintered samples have been explained by structural modification of MgTiO3 phase due to the presence of defects.

The effects of activation and sintering process on microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrical measurements showed difference in dielectric constant (εr), loss tangent (tg δ) and specific resistance (ρ) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

AB - Strontium-titanate powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 0, 5, 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Non-isothermal sintering of non-activated and activated SrTiO3 powder samples in the temperature interval from 50 to 1300 0C with three different heating rates (10, 15 and 20 0C/min) was investigated on a dilatometer. X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the phase composition, lattice microstrains and microstructure morphology of the samples. XRD results showed the presence of new phases: SrCO3 (strontuim-carbonate) and TiO2 (anatase) after 30 minutes of mechanical activation.

AB - In this article the influence of ball miling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system was investigated. The mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time period from 0 to 120 minutes. The influence of mechanical activation on the lattice vibrational spectra was studied by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. Structural investigations have been performed on produced powders. Nitrogen adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results have been obtained: specific surface area continuously decreased up to 40 minutes of activation and increased after that, reaching its minimun value of 5.5 m2/g. The Raman spectra of activated powders have shown that anatase modes have been decreasing in intensity and broadening as the time of activation extended. Also, the additional modes attributed to TiO2 II, srilankite and rutile phases started to appear as a consequence of activation.

AB - Ferroelectric ceramic barium strontium titanate (Ba0.77Sr0.23TiO3), BST, was prepared by solid-state reactions using starting powders of barium carbonate (BaCO3), strontium carbonate (SrCO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2-anatase). Non-activated and mechanically activated mixtures with high-energy planetary ball mill (0, 5, 10, 20, 80 and 120 minutes) were sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1400 °C for two hours in air. The maximum value of ceramic density is about 86.20% TG. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to obtain information on the phase composition, as well as determining the influence of mechanical activation on the half height width of the diffraction lines (111) BST isothermally sintered samples at 1400 °C during two hours. Defects and the beginning process of sintering on the microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements (loss tangent of the angle, Nyquist diagrams and influence the activation time dependence of XC = f (log ν)) are made of ceramics sintered at 1400 °C for two hours.

AB - Starting mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO, and TiO2 powders are mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for various periods of time. The powders obtained are sintered isothermally at 1100°C for 120 min. Non-isothermal sintering process is followed by measurements with a sensitive dilatometer, as well. Results of microstructure characterization using SEM analyses along with DTA analyses are provided. These results are correlated with the values of electric resistivity, capacitance, and loss tangent of the samples, and it is found that with increasing milling time, the increase in values of electrical properties is noticed.

AB - In this article the influence of mechanical activation on sintering process of bariumstrontium-titanate ceramics has been investigated. Both non-activated and mixtures treated in a planetary ball mill for 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 minutes were sintered at 1100-1400°C for 2 hours in presence of air atmosphere. The influence of mechanical activation on phase composition and crystal structure has been analyzed by XRD, while the effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that temperature of 1100°C was too low to induce final sintering stage for this system. Electrical measurements have been conducted for the densest ceramics sintered at 1400°C for 2 hours. [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. OI172057]

AB - Amount of fly ash which is and yet to be generated in the coming years highlights the necessity of developing new methods of the recycling where this waste can be reused in significant quantity. A new possibility for fly ash utilization is in high-temperature application (thermal insulators or/and refractory material products). As such, fly ash has to adequately answer the mechanical and thermal stability criteria. One of the ways of achieving it is by applying mechanical activation procedure on fly ash. In present study, fly ashes from two different power plants were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Mechanically treated fly ashes were cemented with two different binders: standard Portland cement and high-aluminates cement. Physico-chemical analysis and investigation of mineralogical components of composites are emphasized, due to the changes occurred in fly ash during mechanical activation and sintering of composites. Macro-performance of the composites was correlated to the microstructure of fly ash studied by means of XRD and SEM analysis. Thermal stability of crystalline phases was investigated with DTA. Highlight was placed on determination of relationship between mechanically activated fly ash and obtained composites microstructure on one side and behavior of sintered composites on the other side. AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250°C for 2h with a heating rate of 10°C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - In this article the influence of ball milling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system, along with its influence on electrical properties of post-sintering samples, were investigated. Mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time interval from 0 to 120 minutes. On thus obtained powders, structural investigations have been performed. N2 adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results were obtained: specific surface area continuously decreases up to 40 minutes of activation and after that increases, reaching its minimum value of 5.5 m2/g. The influence of mechanical activation on lattice vibration spectra was examined by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. For sintered samples characterization, Raman scattering spectroscopy has been used. Very similar spectra for all samples were observed. Raman spectroscopy of sintered samples indicates a presence of two phases, while varieties in spectra were explained with different ratio of present phases. Effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed difference in dielectric constant (εr), loss tangent (tgδ) and specific resistance (ρ) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

abstract = "In this article the influence of mechanical activation on sintering process of magnesium-titanate and barium-zinc-titanate ceramics has been investigated. Both nonactivated and mixtures treated in planetary ball mill for 80 minutes were sintered at 1100ºC and 1300ºC. The influence of mechanical activation on phase composition and crystal structure has been analyzed by XRD, while the effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that temperature of 1100ºC was to low to induce final sintering stage for both systems. Moreover, we concluded that barium-zinc-titanate ceramics exhibited better sinterability than magnesium-titanate ceramics.",

Taking this into account, in order to develop of new advanced materials it is essential to determine principles that characterize this interdependency. Therefore, in this article the principles of fundamental research and the importance of obtained results are considered and implemented in the field of technical realizations.

AB - The aim of this work was an investigation of structural and electrical properties of sintered barium-zinc-titanate ceramics. Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill up to 80 minutes and sintered isothermally in air for 120 minutes at 1300°C. The phase composition in the BaCO3-ZnO-TiO2 system after milling and sintering was analyzed using the XRD method. The existence of pure barium-zinc-titanate has been registered. Microstructure analyses were performed using SEM. The results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the sintered samples were correlated with the XRD and SEM results.

AB - Mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time interval from 0 to 120 minutes. On thus obtained powders, structural investigations have been performed. N2 adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results are obtained: specific surface area continuously decreases up to 40 minutes of activation and after that increases, reaching its minimum value of 4.4 m2/g. The influence of mechanical activation on lattice vibrational spectra was examined by Raman spectroscopy at room temperatures. The differential thermal analysis has been performed in order to investigate thermal behavior of the mixtures, indicating at several endothermal peaks in range of RT to 1100oC. SEM gave information about changes in microstructures, showing the clear decrease in particle size.

AB - Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was prepared from the starting materials BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 through solid state reaction. Mixtures of these oxides were mechanically activated using a high-energy ball mill at different time intervals from 0 to 120 minutes. X-ray diffraction was employed in order to determine the crystal structure and gave information about composition of phase variation. It was observed that after 40 minutes early synthesis of Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 phase occurred. Particle size distribution along with scanning electron microscopy gave very useful information about powder morphology.

AB - Mixtures of MgO-TiO2 were mechanically activated using high-energy planetary ball mill during 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 minutes. Sintering process was preformed in air at 1100o-1400oC for 2h. The decrease in powder’s particle size was noticed as the time of mechanical activation increased and confirmed by particle size analyzer. XRD analyses were performed in order to acquire the information about phase composition. Different ratio mixtures of MgTiO3 and Mg2TiO4 are present within all sintered samples. The effect of tribophysical activation on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The differential thermal gravimetric analysis has been performed in order to investigate thermal behaviour of the mixtures.
