AB  - In 2016, the Museum of Krajina in Negotin undertook an extensive field survey of the area under its responsibility to establish the actual state of preservation of the archaeological heritage, eligible for the preliminary list of sites on the Danube limes in Serbia to be nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Till 2023, the Serbian Government, by the Ministry of Culture, financed several archaeological campaigns as well as reconstruction work that have been undertaken at the sites of Aquae (Prahovo), Clevora (Mora Vagei-Mihajlovac), and Laccoburgus (Ćetaće – Radujevac) to shed a new light on this critical and exciting part of Danubian limes. This region was largely and luckily preserved of flooding caused by the construction of the Iron Gate’s electric power system in the last decades of the 20th century. This important fact was one of the primary triggers for contemporary field research. Our contribution tends to expose and discuss the new scientific results that we have obtained so far, as well as to point out the importance of the remains of the Roman cultural heritage of the Negotin area that would significantly add to the growth and development of this region situated on the three-border between Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

AB  - Dans le cadre de ma communication je vais faire un aperçu sur les nouveaux développements dans le domaine de l’archéologie romaine du limes de Danube dans la région de la ville de Negotin dans l’extrême Est de la Serbie moderne. Il s’agit entre autres d’aperçu lié aux localités de Clevora (Mora Vagei), Aquae (Prahovo) et Laccoburgus (Ćetaće – Radujevac), afin de mieux comprendre les spécificités de la région d’Aquae romain.
Une inscription de l’époque du Trajan, malheureusement pas encore retrouvée, vient de compléter notre l’image sur cet important territoire. Il s’agit d’une plaque de calcaire, brisée en deux fragments jointifs, endommagée en plusieurs endroits, brisé en bas est trouvée à Aquae (Prahovo). Le fragment droit était encastré dans les ruines de la porte orientale de la forteresse, tournée vers le Danube, a été transporté en 1848 au "foyer du Tribunal de conciliation" à Prahovo. En 1870 un des fragments gisait dans le lycée de Negotin, et le second, préparé pour un remploi, se trouvait chez un aubergiste de Prahovo "il devait être transporté à Negotin" (Kanitz, Studien, p. 57). Les deux fragments ont disparu avant 1900.

	On considérait jusqu'à présent que cette inscription se rapportait à l'édification du castellum de Prahovo et à la construction d'une route. Toutefois, la découverte récente à proximité de Prahovo, d'un port romain datant de l'époque de Trajan  et l'enregistrement sur ce site de fragments de décoration architecturale ressemblant fortement à ceux qui apparaissent sur le cadre de l'inscription de  Trajan à Djerdap, autorisent à supposer que notre inscription avait été apposée sur un des édifices du port, afin de marquer la fin des travaux de construction, comme c'était le cas des autres inscriptions de construction découvertes le long de la voie romaine et du canal dans ce secteur du limes.
	Cette inscription est datée entre les années 98 et 99, d'après les deux pouvoirs consulaires de l'empereur.

Уз његову велику подршку и савете, археолошка екипа истраживала је простор Сврљига више од једне деценије, изнедрила неколико значајних књига, а бројне чланке и излагања промовисала како у Србији,  тако и у иностранству. Барем пола деценије пројекат је имао међународни карактер, с обзиром на то да су ископавања вршена са угледном институцијом из Француске, а већи број иностраних и домаћих студената узео је учешће на овим ископавањима. 

Our friendship with Prof. Dr. Sreten Petrović dates back to when archaeological excava tions had not even begun in the village of Niševac by Svrljig. This site will be the Roman station and 
settlement of Timacum Maius. With his great support and advice, the archaeological team explored 
the area of Svrljig for more than a decade, produced several influential books, and promoted numer ous articles and presentations in Serbia and abroad. The project had an international character for 
at least half a decade, given that the excavations were carried out with a reputable institution from 
France and many foreign and domestic students participated in the field research.

AB  - Given its remarkable location in the vicinity of the confluence of the Timok
and Danube rivers, on the Roman limes, as well as indications of very early construction,
the site of Ćetaće near the village of Radujevac offers vital evidence for a closer characterization
of the whole area of Roman Aquae (Prahovo) in terms of its military, communication, economic, mining and customs operation role. Based on two archaeological campaigns, in
2021 and 2022, and extensive field surveys of the broader area, the site has been determined
to have several levels dating from the proto-historical, Roman and early Byzantine periods
and retains an inherent military and strategic importance until in the contemporary period.
As luck would have it, the site is located on a section of the Danube limes in Serbia which
was not endangered by the construction of the hydroelectric power plants on the Danube. As
far as the Roman period is concerned, the existence has been attested of the masonry defences
and a corner tower of a fort built in the late first century which kept undergoing alterations
and additions until the early Byzantine period. The partially established chronology has been
confirmed by interesting finds.

AB  - Dans l’organisation des territoires, la mise en place de l’infrastructure de transport est une constante indispensable. Celle-ci s’appuie sur les réalités du relief, l’utilisation de chemins anciens, les informations humaines en vue de l’ouverture des voies stratégiques, militaires et commerciales, et leur aménagement. Ainsi, pour supporter et suppléer un axe principal sont réalisées des voies parallèles, des dédoublements qui nécessitent de gros travaux comme le long de la côte Adriatique et dans les Portes de Fer. Le long des vallées sont bâties des voies de pénétration qui, selon les époques, prennent plus ou moins d’importance. Enfin, comme un symbole de l’aboutissement de l’infrastructure nécessaire à la mobilité, on note la création de déviations et de raccourcis.

AB  - On the basis of Procopius' writings and comparison with the factual situation on the ground after three archaeological campaigns, some conclusions could be drawn about the character of the Ćetaće locality and its ancient name.By etymological analysis of the toponyms Βουργονοβορε, one could assume that it is a corrupted name *Βουργονοβο. So *Βουργονοβο would be Romanic *Burgonovo (obviously a prepositional compound Burg-o-novo), in the obvious meaning of "new fortress/town (etc.)" (*Burgus Novus). It fits with the fact that it was built then, in the time of Justinian. Namely, it is about an archeologically confirmed late antique fortification near Radujevac, which, due to the devastation, cannot be explored archaeologically.
On the other hand, Λακκοβουργο, the second fortification from Aquae towards Dorticum, since it goes together (τε και) with *Βουργονοβο (*Burgonovo), could be equally a Roman name and a compound. Where does this "κκ" come from? I think it is according to the Greek (co-radical) word λακκος. It would then be Roman *Lacc-o-burgo (Laccoburgus), which would mean "fortress/town (etc.) by/on a lake(s), perhaps also in the sense of some water reservoir, or perhaps by/on to a water tank, close to stagnant water, swamps, etc.''
Taking into account the mentioned data from the sources, the location of the site itself, the results of archaeological research and historical data in terms of the proximity of Aquae, which was the seat of one of the important mining districts of the Danuvii ripa, it could be assumed that there were also mining operations in Ćetaće (Laccoburgus?) perhaps cooling the heated metal with a large amount of water.

AB  - La station Ad Scrofulas, jusqu’à présent pas exactement localisée, se trouvait entre les forteresses de Novae (Čezava) et Taliata (Donji Milanovac), sur la route romaine Singidunum – Viminacium – Ratiaria. Elle est mentionnée dans la Table de Peutinger et dans la géographie de l’Anonyme de Ravenne sous le nom Scrofulas, mais elle ne figure pas dans l’Itinéraire d’Antonin qui note les relais de la même voie. Ad Scrofulas devrait être identifié à la tour de guet près de Gospodjin Vir, construite à la fin du Ier s. p.C. et utilisée jusqu’au IVe s. Cette hypothèse est étayée par le nom du toponyme qui indique l’existence d’un passage du navigation étroit ou d’un détroit, qui existait en effet près de Gospodjin Vir, ainsi que par la présence de deux tables de Tibère, une de Claude et deux de Domitien, gravées sur un rocher escarpé, directement sur le tracé de la route romaine, à proximité de la tour de guet. Le même texte des deux tables de Domitien de Gospodjin Vir utilise clairement iter Scorfularum lors de la description de l’itinéraire de la voie romaine.

сада давне 2008. године. Предводио их је Балканолошки ин ститут САНУ у сарадњи са Kултурним центром у Сврљигу, уз

Републике Србије и Општине Сврљиг. До последње теренске 
кампање обављене 2017. године, научни тим водио је др Вла димир П. Петровић у сарадњи са др Војиславом Филиповићем 
и Славишом Миливојевићем. 
Текст који ћете читати на страницама које следе, не пле дира да буде строго научни рад, како је то до сада био случај. 
Идеја је да се у форми својеврсне исповести укаже на огромно 
прегалаштво, конструктивну и пријатељску атмосферу, као и 
сјајне истраживачке резултате којима се као тим веома поно симо. Време је да укажамо на препреке које су нас снашле и 
великој мери зауставиле, онда када се то никако није смело 
десити јер: „Речи лете, а написано остаје!“ (lat. Verba volant, 
Scripta manent!). Верујемо да има смисла у краткој форми за писати све оно што нас радује и што нас мори, како би неким 
будућим генерацијама истраживача било од користи и како 
бисмо, ослобођени бремените тишине, можда отворили пут 
неком новом почетку.

AB  - Notre dossier traite de la mise en place des infrastructures nécessaires à la préparation des campagnes de Trajan en
Dacie, à la traversée de la frontière, enfin à la sécurisation de la ligne du Danube inférieur. Il s’agit, donc, de présenter
une histoire des travaux routiers, notamment la fin du chantier des Portes de Fer et la connexion avec le reste de la voie
danubienne, doublée par les ports de la flotte de Mésie. Pour ce qui est du passage du fleuve, et la première campagne,
nous allons évoquer, en particulier, le rôle des têtes de pont, des grands camps en terre qui permettent la concentration
des troupes, des ponts et des premières voies au nord du Danube. Enfin, la période entre les deux campagnes, la chute
du royaume dace et le début de la province, voit la mise en place d’un réseau de camps, parfois bâtis en pierre, reliés par
des voies au pont de Pontes – Drobeta.

the most favorable preconditions for the construction and establishment of the large
scale of Roman terrestrial and fluvial communication lines of the different character
and chronology as well, as for the particular urbanization system. Some recent developments
concerning the scientific research in this territory tend to broaden our
previous knowledge and to revise the persisting conclusions.

AB  - The bronze signum discussed in this paper was discovered by archaeological ex­cavation on the site of Timacum Maius in 2010. Found in the area of a luxurious Roman-period building, the artefact shows a tapering body with a central conical socket similar to a spearhead socket. It is one of the twenty-three known signa of the so-called classical-type. Most of them were found in the context of the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, and we also presume the cultic purpose of the bronze signum from Timacum Maius. A similar find comes from Jupiter Dolichenus’ shrine in Egeta on the Danube limes with an inscription that connects it directly with the Dolichenian cult, and with the First Cohort of Cretans (Cohors I Cretum), the unit which had previously been stationed at Timacus Maius. The signum from Timacum Maius is most likely also connected with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus and chronologically belongs to a period which is much earlier than the Severan age.

The 2014 campaign came up with nine Roman bricks stamped with inscriptions of the First Cohort of Cretans (Cohors I Cretum) built into the walls of a Roman bath. The inscriptions provide evi­dence for the character, chronology and history of the Roman settlement.

AB  - Mon article a pour l'objet d'études les voies romaines en Mésie Supérieure, représenté dans les itinéraires romains, tel que la Table de Peutinger (Tabula Peutingeriana). À l'aide des informations qu'on lit dans les textes des bornes milliaires, le but de mon article serait d'établir une analyse chronologique concernant la construction et les rénovations des axes routiers majeurs dans la province, ainsi que de deviner l'existence des exemples de la propagande impériale. Je vais essayer aussi de résoudre quelques questions déjà posées dans la littérature scientifique relative à l'interprétation des indications dans les itinéraires sur l'emplacement des certaines stations mal attribuées jusqu'à présent. Les bornes milliaires nous renseignent entre autres sur les chemins exacts des routes romaines. Je vais conclure en proposant les réponses sur les questions et thèmes ouverts.
