AB - Magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) is a material with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties, low dielectric permeability and loss tangent. Based on those properties, MgAl2O4 has found a significant application in refractory ceramics, ceramics windows, integrated electronic devices, etc. Also, it possesses a high chemical and radiation resistance. In this research, MgO was calcined at 1000ºC for an hour, with a step of 10ºC/min to avoid presence of hydroxide or carbonate. MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio afterwards. The powders were mechanically activated for 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The mass ratio of powder and balls was 1:40. The mechanically activated powders are pressed in the tablets, under the pressure of 0.5 t. The pressed powders were heated up to 1300 ºC with a step of 10 ºC/min and held for 1 h for the reaction. Reacted pellets were crushed and sieved. Obtained spinel powders were sintered at 1450 ºC for 2 h. Both sintered and non-sintered samples were investigated by XRD and SEM. The particle size distribution of the reacted powders was investigated by laser diffraction analysis. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the lattice vibration in the sintered samples. All results are in accordance with our previous results, and the pure dense spinel phase is obtained.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - Iron-doped strontium-titanate (SrTiO3) powders with various iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) weight percentages (1.5, 3 and 6 wt%) were prepared by a solid-state method in the presence of mechanical activation (10, 30 and 120 min). A systematic investigation by XRD, SEM and Raman spectroscopy has been undertaken to evaluate the role of dopant on the microstructural and morphological study of the perovskite oxide obtained. The optical properties of the different iron-doped and activated Fe-SrTiO3 powders have been also evaluated. The results demonstrated that Fe has been substituted into the lattice and surface layers of particles of SrTiO3 powders and the absorption edge shifted to higher wavelength values with increasing activation time and dopant weight percentage. The lowest value of the band gap (Eg=3.20 eV) was registered for the longest activation (120 min) and the highest weight percentage of dopant (6 wt%). Combining doping with mechanical activation, led to lower values of Eg and that fact could be used in subsequent studies to make Fe-SrTiO3 more suitable photocatalysts.

AB - Goat cheeses from high heat treated milk (HHTM: 80 °C/5 min (E1) and 90 °C/5 min (E2)), could be regarded as new products, compared to their analogues made from commonly pasteurized milk (65 °C/30 min (C)). Descriptive analysis and consumer tests with a hedonic scale and JAR scale were part of the product development process. The use of scanning electron microscopy enabled deeper insight into the flavor and texture of the cheeses. In all cheese variants, goaty flavor was mildly pronounced. Young HHTM cheeses also had a pronounced whey and cooked/milky flavor. Consumers found such flavor ‘too intensive’. Unlike the control variant, HHTM cheeses were not described as ‘too hard’. Such improvement in texture was found to be a result of fine, highly branched microstructure, sustained over the course of ripening time and highly incorporated milk fat globules inside the cheese mass. Cluster analysis showed that the largest group of consumers (47.5%) preferred E2 cheese. Although consumers found that most of the cheeses were ‘too salty’, this excess did not decrease their overall acceptance. Neither microstructure analysis nor descriptive sensory analysis of goat white brined cheeses produced from high heat treated milk has been done before.

AB - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drug in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53-75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation distinguished from others by higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process affected mainly position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray dried formulations compared to freeze dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151-223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.

abstract = "Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drug in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Spray dried formulations compared to freeze dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151-223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.",

AB - Solid-state mechanical activation of MgO and α-Al2O3 powders was used to produce MgAl2O4. The cation site occupancy in the resulting MgAl2O4 spinel was investigated using different methods. Differential thermal analysis and thermal gravimetry showed that mechanical activation reduced the spinel formation temperature by around 200 °C, and the corresponding activation energy by about 25%. In addition, characteristic temperatures for evaporation of physisorbed water and decomposition of Mg(OH)2 shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of the sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens, indicating that the breaking point for ordering of the crystal structure was around 1500 °C for non-activated samples, and 1400 °C for activated samples.

AB - Rennet coagulation of goat milk heated to 65 °C/30 min (Gc), 80 °C/5 min (G8) and 90 °C/5 min (G9) was studied. A rheometer equipped with a vane geometry tool was used to measure milk coagulation parameters and viscoelastic properties of rennet gels. Yield parameters: curd yield, laboratory curd yield and curd yield efficiency were measured and calculated. Scanning electron microscopy of rennet gels was conducted. Storage moduli (G’) of gels at the moment of cutting were 19.9 ± 1.71 Pa (Gc), 11.9 ± 1.96 Pa (G8) and 7.3 ± 1.46 Pa (G9). Aggregation rate and curd firmness decreased with the increase of milk heating temperature, while coagulation time did not change significantly. High heat treatment of goat milk had a significant effect on both laboratory curd yield and curd yield. However, laboratory curd yield (27.7 ± 1.84%) of the G9 treatment was unreasonably high compared to curd yield (15.4 ± 0.60%). The microstructure of G9 was notably different compared to Gc and G8, with a denser and more compact microstructure, smaller paracasein micelles and void spaces in a form of cracks indicating weaker cross links. The findings of this study might serve as the bases for the development of different cheese types produced from high-heat-treated goat milk.

AB - Barium titanate (BaTiO3) attracts high scientific and technological attention due to good dielectric and electromechanical properties. Although BaTiO3 is one of the most frequently investigated ferroelectric materials, the need for finding new and/or improved synthesis methods of this material still exists. In this paper, a novel, mild synthesis route for producing tetragonal BaTiO3 from barium nitrate and Ti-oxalate precursor is presented. Morphology of the prepared and subsequently sintered BaTiO3 was determined by SEM. Particle size distribution of the as prepared powder was monitored by the laser diffraction. The phase composition, structure and lattice dynamics were investigated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, dielectric parameters were determined in the temperature range from 30 to 180 degrees C, and within a variety of frequencies. Curie temperature was detected at 130 degrees C.

Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of the sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens, indicating that the breaking point for ordering of the crystal structure was around 1500 °C for non-activated samples, and 1400 °C for activated samples.",

AB - Magnesium aluminate has spinel structure and very good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Owing to these properties, it has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its using for integrated electronic devices, as well. Furthermore, as a porous ceramic, magnesium aluminate has important application as humidity sensor, catalyst and filter for waste water purification. In this paper, synthesis and characterization of MgAl2O4 was performed. Stochiometric ratio of MgO and Al2O3powders was mixed and calcined within the temperatures range 1500-1800 oC to produce pure spinel phase. Thereafter pellets were crushed and treated in planetary ball mill for 60 minutes to obtained fine grain. All powders, calcined and milled, were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature denser samples but more fragile have been synthesized. Milling for 1 hour leads to crumble of bigger particles and getting finer, single phase powders. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in crystal structure after milling.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels are refractory ceramics with excellent properties, such as high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant, applicable in many modern industries. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation represents a very efficient method for increasing the reactivity of powders, accelerating chemical reactions and decreasing the sintering temperatures. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 60 minutes. Sintering was performed in air at temperatures ranging from 1200°C to 1600 °C with a 2 h dwell time. Initial powders and sintered samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetry (TG) were used to determine the temperatures for synthesis reactions and phase transformations. Based on the DTA results, several different processes occured during heating, including evaporation of physisorbed water, decomposition of Mg(OH)2, and spinel formation. With mechanical activation, all characteristic temperatures shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens.

AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3 core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and electrical properties was detected and explained.

AB - In the present study, the influence of different encapsulation techniques (lyophilization and spray drying) on gelatin, as a carrier system for delivery of polyphenols compounds, on wild thyme extracts and on encapsulated extracts was investigated. FTIR analyses has shown the presence of carbohydrates, polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, monoterpenes and carboxylates in the dried extracts, while FTIR spectrum of the encapsulated extracts has shown almost exclusively gelatin-based stripes, indicating the efficient encapsulation of the active ingredients of the extracts and therefore their protection. Scanning electron microscopy has shown that the lyophilization process produced irregularly shaped particles, while spray drying formed spherical and pseudo-spherical particles with rough surface. Using the method of diffraction of laser light, it has been found that spray dried encapsulate possessed significantly lower particle size and significantly better uniformity in comparison to the lyophilized sample. According to the results obtained in differential scanning calorimetry, endothermic peak of lyophilized gelatin encapsulate appeared at higher temperature, thus it can be concluded that lyophilized sample was more thermostable than spray dried parallel. Additionally, the values of enthalpy of gelatin encapsulates were significantly higher compared to pure extracts, which confirmed the presence of stabilizing interactions between the encapsulated components and a carrier.

AB - Zinc oxide is one of the most studied materials due to its wide bandgap (3.37 eV) and large exciton binding energy (60 meV) which enables application in electronics, optoelectronics and spintronics. In the forms of single crystal and thin-film ZnO are used as UV and blue light emitter, while sintered ZnO-based ceramics are important as varistors, thermistors or semiconductors. It has been found that point defects in the crystal structure of a ZnO strongly influenced its electrical and optical properties. Neutral oxygen vacancies are considered to be a major component of the defect structure of ZnO. Thus, correlation of the oxygen vacancies concentration with band gap energy of ZnO product is important to its application in optoelectronic devices. In this study we investigated the influence of point defects concentration in ZnO crystal structure on its optical and photocatalytic properties. We analyzed ZnO powders prepared by different techniques: (a) microwave processing of precipitate and (b) hydrothermal processing, which yield different ordered crystal structure. To increase a concentration of the point defects in the crystal structure, the powders were sintered in air atmosphere by heating rate of 10 °/min up to 1100 °C, with dwell time of 1 h. The crystal structure, average crystallite size and phase purity of the ZnO ceramics were determined by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties, in particular, absorption capacity and bang gap energy, were studied using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. To reveal the role of microstructures and point defects in ZnO crystal lattice, which are receptive for luminescence and photocatalytic activity of this functional oxide, photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and EPR spectra were analyzed. The influence of point defects concentration in the ZnO crystal structure on photocatalytic properties was examined via decolorization of methylene blue under direct sunlight irradiation. Correlation between amount of the point defects, absorption capacity and photocatalytic efficiency were established. In order to clarify the experimental results ab initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed.

AB - Novel macro/micro-porous monolith material containing surface amino functional groups was developed for efficient cationic pollutant removal. The monolith was prepared by copolymerization process of monomers glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and modified low molar mass poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In order to improve mechanical stability of GMA-EGDMA monolith, surface of PMMA was modified with ethanol amine in first step, and introduction of methacryloyl chloride in a second step produced m-PMMA. Synthesized GMA-EGDMA-m-PMMA monolith was modified with poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). The effectiveness of copolymerization, as well as introduction of amino groups via PEI modification were confirmed by FTIR and Raman analyses. The morphological appearance of the synthesized monolith, examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), clearly indicates porous structure. The results of textural parameters, i.e. monolith porosity, determined by using liquid saturating method, indicate high degree of porosity. Cationic pollutant removal capacity, cadmium and lead, of 32.0 and 42.5 mg g−1 at 25 °C indicates that this monolith is high efficient. This macro/micro-porous monolith could be a promising adsorbent because of its low-cost synthesis process and excellent performance.

In the forms of single crystal and thin-film ZnO could be used as UV and blue light emitter, while sintered ZnO-based ceramics are important as varistors, thermistors or wide-band gap semiconductors. Intrinsic defects, such as vacancies, interstitials and antisites, in the crystal structure of a ZnO strongly influenced its electrical and optical properties. Thus, understanding the behavior of intrinsic defects during densification of ZnO ceramics as well as correlation of the defects with band gap energy of final product is important to its application in opto-electronic devices.
In this study, the influence of point defects concentration on the densification process and optical properties of ZnO sintered ceramics was investigated. To obtain ZnO sintered ceramics with variety of point defects concentration we employed two starting powders with a different crystal structure ordering, as well different morphology and specific surface area. Sinterability of the powders was investigated by thermo mechanical analyzer; shrinkage data, collected in axial (h) direction during non-isothermal sintering with heating rates of 5, 10 and 20 °/min, were used to calculate activation energy of sintering process. Sintering of uniaxially pressed (P = 100 MPa) cylindrical compacts (ø 6 mm and h ≈ 3 mm) were done in air atmosphere by heating rate of 10 °/min up to 1100 and 1200 °C, and dwell time of 2 h. To study a crystal structure of the sintered samples XRD and Raman spectroscopy were used, for microstructural investigation field emission scanning electron micrographs were recorded while optical properties were determined by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. A detailed study shows that point defect strongly influenced densification process as well optical properties. Sintered ZnO ceramic with a high crystal defect concentration and nanosized grains shows band gap energy of about 2 eV while band gap energy increased with a decrease of defect concentration.

AB - In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers with ethyl vanillin as an active compound were prepared using electrospinning technique. The final products of electrospinning process were in the form of nanofibers films. PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers, having fibers diameters in the range 100–1700 nm, were successfully electrospun from ethanol/water mixture of PVA and ethyl vanillin. The effects of immobilization process on ethyl vanillin thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of DSC showed significant influence of immobilization process on thermal properties of ethyl vanillin. It was noticed that melting point of immobilized ethyl vanillin was lower (~55 °C) compared to free flavor (~77 °C). Our results showed that films based on PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers are mechanically stable.
