AB - The aim of this paper is to present the results of our research on the knowledge and awareness of visitors and residents about karst and protected areas (PAs). The research was carried out in the Tara National Park (NP) in western Serbia, which includes karst landscapes. By conducting surveys with visitors, local population, and National Park employees, as well as interviews with local key persons, NP key persons and external experts, we got a deeper understanding of the issues related to knowledge on karst and PAs. We also investigated whether local people or visitors knew the values of karst landscapes in general and how they were informed or learned about the Tara NP. In addition, we also analysed the content of these topics in school curricula and textbooks in Serbia. We concluded that the awareness about the researched topics is unsatisfactory at present thus it should be raised to a higher level, both in the case of local people and in the case of visitors. One of the most significant ways to improve the current level is through formal, non-formal, and informal education.

AB - This paper represents a case study examining attitudes of various stakeholders about Tara National Park (NP) (Serbia), identifying also the factors that shape these attitudes. The survey method was applied to a sample of 405 respondents (197 community members and 208 visitors). In addition, 15 interviews with specific key actors (NP executives and local key persons) were performed. The research confirmed the presence of different types of conflicts among stakeholders, mostly between the NP and the local population (primarily farmers) associated with land use in agriculture and the ban on the construction of facilities. The community recognizes tourism as the highest priority, unlike the NP leaders and visitors, who emphasize protection and conservation (especially biodiversity) as the primary goals of future NP development. The opinions of the local population are divided concerning support for the existence of the NP and the importance of it as a part of the national heritage. Most of them do not recognize the economic benefits resulting from the proclamation of the NP and do not see themselves as participants in the decision-making process. The findings also reveal that visitors strongly support tourism development and activities following the principles of nature protection. This category of respondents is only partly affected by the fact that this area has been declared a NP. The analysis shows that certain socioeconomic factors considerably influence the opinions of both community and visitors. Results suggest that future actions should be aimed at improving the coordination of various stakeholders, especially the NP and the community, through different social mobilization activities. Stimulating small businesses and providing incentives for agriculture and nature tourism development could be a useful step forward.

AB - In the 21st century, many countries are starting to use geothermal energy (GTE) as a new energy source. Serbia also has the potential to use it as a renewable energy source. The complex geological structure of its terrain has given rise to a large number of thermomineral springs and geothermal wells. Based on the existing measurements, the geothermal heat flow density in Serbia ranges from 80 to 120 mW/m2, which is above Europe's average (60 mW/m2). Currently, there are 66 projects in Serbia that directly use geothermal energy. There are an estimated 1005 geothermal heat pump units. Their power varies between 10 kW and 40 kW and they operate for 2860 full load hours per year. This paper deals with the development, current state and perspectives of geothermal energy utilization for heating in Serbia. To illustrate the current state of geothermal energy utilization in Serbia, spa settlements Vranjska Banja and Gornja Trepča, as well as the Bogatić Municipality have been singled out as examples of good practice. The presented analysis includes determining the available amount of geothermal energy and its utilization for district heating or heating of selected public facilities. The concept and methodology of the presented research are based on data collection through literature review, surveys and field research. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages over other energy sources. However, it was concluded that аlthough there is potential, geothermal sources, as a renewable energy source, are used negligibly in Serbia.

AB - By the example of Tara National Park (NP), we present how the geoheritage can and should be presented in a NP where the primary role is played by biology. Tara NP has a rich geoheritage, especially its karst phenomena, which include gorges (e.g. the 1000-m-deep Drina Gorge), plateaus with dolines, dry valleys, and uvalas as well as springs and travertines. In addition, ophiolites also enrich the geoheritage; hence, the area has a high geodiversity. Large reservoirs of the territory provide an opportunity to study the anthropogenic impact on hydrology and geomorphology. After presenting the geoheritage elements of the area, we examine the views and knowledge of local people and visitors about karst and geotourism with the help of a questionnaire survey. The results show that local residents support the further development of tourism, but geotourism is a rather new concept for them. On the contrary, tourists are more familiar with geotourism. Among the development perspectives, tourists support those that involve only minor environmental changes, that is in agreement with NP policy. Finally, we formulate some suggestions about geotourism development in the area. First, we outline some plans for new geo-educational trails and viewpoints. Second, we highlight the possibility to increase the geo-content of some already existing programs (e.g. boat tours). Third, we emphasize that geotourism of Tara should be connected to neighbouring areas. A new geopark is already under planning, which would include the area of Tara NP as well.

AB - The research analyzes attitudes and habits of the visitors in the National Park (NP) Taganay on South Urals in Russia. The survey method was applied on a sample of 305 respondents in order to investigate visitors’ travel habits, as well as their perceptions regarding different experiences they were exposed to. The results identified a strong positive perception regarding overall experiences from visiting the NP. Specific permanent patterns of behavior were observed and compatibility between visitors’ habits and the environment was determined. The most significant variables affecting perceptions are the frequency of visits and the age. The study has identified certain concerns regarding environmental issues. Respondents were found sensitive to garbage production in public areas and the presence of noise in protected territory. The results of the study provide inputs for solving the long-standing conflict between nature conservation and mass tourism in Russian protected areas.

AB - Despite the significant natural potential, geothermal energy in Serbia has traditionally been used in balneology and recreation, while its share in the country’s total energy balance is almost negligible (0.05%). The present paper deals with the City Municipality of Vranjska Banja as a pioneer in the territory of Serbia in using geothermal energy for heating. The concept and methodology of the present research are directly related to the utilization of geothermal resources for district heating in the Vranjska Banja area. The presented analysis includes: determining the available amount of energy, identifying the energy needs of selected public
facilities, and the estimation of investment necessary for energy utilization. A survey, combined with field research, is focused on four public facilities connected to the heating system relying on geothermal sources, as well as on two facilities that should be connected to the system in the next phases. The results show economic, ecological, and technological advantages of using geothermal heating systems, as well as the acceptable price of equipment maintenance. An economic assessment of the transition of one facility from the existing heating system to a system relying on geothermal energy has also been made. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness
of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages (safe heating, absence of CO2 emission) over other energy sources.

AB - The research involved a comparison of two case studies dealing with the perceptions of the local population to tourism. The effects and the control of tourism development were analyzed, as well as the availability of information on sustainable tourism and impact on the community in two national parks (NPs) in Serbia. The survey method was applied on a sample of 227 (NP Đerdap) and 210 (NP Tara) respondents. The survey results identified the strong positive perception of the presence of tourists among the two categories of respondents and also certain differences regarding economic benefits of tourism. Research also recognized a poor impact of tourism on the local community in terms of their knowledge and personal involvement. Education and employment in tourism industry were found to be strong factors affecting the residents’ perceptions. Some independent variables significantly predicted the level of local population’s support for tourism in both national parks (tourism impact on job creation, tourism impact on fostering a local culture, etc.). This comparative analysis provides inputs for directing future tourism programmes and devising a development policies adjusted to the needs of the local community.

AB - The main objective of the research carried out within this thesis is to define a scientifically relevant basis for the interpretation of sustainable tourism in national parks in Serbia; this basis should be both viable in terms of application and supported by an adequate theoretical framework.
The research tasks have included the elaboration of the issue of sustainable tourism development in national parks through an analysis of the indicators defined by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The thesis seeks to contribute to and improve the applied methodology, having in mind that the selected indicators are analyzed on the example of a particular tourist area. The contribution has been made through scientific explanations, new data obtained in field research and through contacts with the managers of protected areas, as well through description and systematization of data. National Parks are interpreted through an analysis of interdependent components of the tourism system, represented by the respective groups of indicators, which has allowed us to analyze causal links.
The indicators have been applied to two national parks in Serbia – the Đerdap National Park and the Tara National Park, with the aim of investigating the presence and strength of the parameters that condition the development of sustainable tourism and analyzing the results of actions undertaken. The selection of indicators was performed based on the criteria of evaluation and collective assessment. The final analysis included a total of 25 indicators, analyzed in six different problem topics (effects of tourism on communities, tourist satisfaction, economic benefits from tourism, environmental protection and environmental impact of tourism activity, destination planning and control, designing products and services). The interpretation of the obtained results was performed by defining the so-called "acceptable range" of indicators and comparing them with the selected reference point; this constitutes an upgrade of the methodology.
The research results may be adapted to various users (academics, managers of national parks and other protected assets, tourist organizations), which makes them directly applicable. The usefulness of the obtained results is reflected in the possibility to compare the current state of the Đerdap and Tara national parks with the development achieved in certain time intervals (after one, five or ten years) by applying the same indicators in order to determine whether the actions undertaken have given a positive result. From the academic point of view, the obtained results and the applied methodology allow for comparisons with other protected areas.
Surveys were conducted on local population samples and among the visitors of both national parks. Surveys were designed using a methodological procedure proposed by the World Tourism Organization for the analysis of indicators of satisfaction of the local population and tourists adjusted to the explored area of the two national parks. Based on the analysis, it has been established that the status of a large number of indicators is unsustainable in all of the studied areas of sustainable tourism (economic and social spheres, environmental protection, management and satisfaction of tourists). Accordingly, the global conclusion is that tourism in the national parks is not being developed on a sustainable basis. The interpretation of indicators yielded similar results for the Đerdap and Tara national parks, i.e. common shortcomings and problems in the tourist development of these areas have been identified.
The development of tourism is only partly planned, due to which it is, to a certain degree, uncontrollable in character. The planning of its development has only a secondary importance, due to which the economic benefit that national parks achieve from tourism is poor compared to the benefit from other activities (forestry). The research has shown that in both national parks tourism has little impact on the local community, in terms of creating jobs and a personal involvement in the tourism industry.
The negative effect of tourism on the environment is reflected in the presence of the problem of illegal dumps in both national parks, while issues related to the municipal infrastructure remain unresolved. Tourist facilities and the facilities controlled by the management of the national parks have neither devices for wastewater recycling, nor those for dealing with solid waste.
The unsustainable status of indicators is particularly pronounced in the area of destination management in terms of the lack of development and the poor quality of transport infrastructure and public transport network. The problem of unprofitable largescale accommodation facilities (especially in the Đerdap National Park), which are necessary to transform into smaller-capacity facilities has also been identified. In the studied areas, tourism has not significantly damaged the environment in terms of excessive construction activity, an excessive number of visitors and the creation of huge crowds at tourist sites. A global analysis of the indicators has confirmed that these areas have strong environmental attributes (the presence of endemic and relict species, the recognition of international conventions) and preserved natural and cultural tourism values. Tourists have expressed considerable satisfaction with the diversity of experiences during their visits to the national parks. A good starting point for planning the development of tourism on a sustainable basis has been identified. However, it is necessary to find solutions for the existing development obstacles and problems.

However, it is necessary to find solutions for the existing development obstacles and problems.",

AB - In the context of the broader controversy about sustainable development, tourism literature highlights the importance of the support of the local population to tourism development. The active support of the community is essential for the local government, the future development policies and all entities that participate in the creation of sustainable tourism development. The specific dimension of this influence exists in protected areas, given the pronounced strong environmental component and a bond that is created among tourism - protected area - locals. The paper analyzes the attitudes and opinions of the local population residing in the National Park "Derdap" or its protection zone about the effects and control of tourism development, as well as the availability of information on sustainable tourism and the impact this activity has on the community. The method applied is survey research on a sample of 227 respondents. During the preparation of the survey, the methodological procedure for the analysis of sustainable tourism indicators ware used proposed by the World Tourism Organization.

AB - There is no doubt that theory of tourism lags behind increased tourism practice. In order to decrease such gap, theoretical work in tourism must be intensified and permanently reconsidered in future period. Consequently, it is necessary to pay attention to complex analysis and explicit interpretation of important notions that are integral parts of tourism practice, as well as objects of scientific investigations. The subject of this paper is analysis of complex structure of tourism resource base. Specially are focused two relevant tourism notions - tourist resources and tourist attractions (tourist motives). Analysis of their meaning, interrelationship and differences is made, relying on basic tourismological principles and critical review of contemporary experts opinions in this domain. Correct interpretation, setting the correlation and distinction between tourism relevant notions, at the same time require great responsibility and duty of tourismologists, tourism geographers, economists and other experts in the field of tourism to contribute to strengthening of tourism theory, adequately influencing on growing tourism practice.
