AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 °C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm2 provided ceramics samples with the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)–O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger FeOFe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - Spinel materials based on Mn and Ni has been intensively studied over the past years due to their excellent semiconductor properties. Nickel manganite as NTC thermistor is widely used today in different industrial sectors. Here we report the complex polymerization method (CPM) for producing nickel manganite fine particles with a homogeneous distribution of constituent cations in the crystal lattice that ensures formation of dense monophased ceramic with the novel magnetic properties after been sintered in oxygen and air atmosphere. Phase composition of the synthesized materials was examined by XRPD, while the morphology of the powder and microstructure of ceramic were investigated using FESEM and SEM analyses, respectively. The magnetic properties of the samples have been studied by measuring the temperature and field dependence of magnetization. Magnetic measurements of M(T) reveal rather complex magnetic properties and multiple magnetic phase transitions. In the case of air atmosphere we found three magnetic phase transitions with transition temperatures at TM1=35 K, TM2=101 K and TM3=120 K. TM1 maximum is strongly dependent on the strength of the applied magnetic field (TM1 decreases with increasing applied field) whereas the TM3 is field independent The values of the coercivity, remanent magnetization and saturation magnetization at 100 K are: HC = 184 Oe, Mr = 1.92 emu/g and MS = 7.88 emu/g, respectively. The measured values at 5 K are HC = 1035 Oe, Mr = 7.70 emu/g and MS = 14.47 emu/g. Moreover, hysteresis properties measured after cooling of the sample in magnetic field show exchange bias effect with an exchange bias field |HEB=196 Oe. For the sample synthetized in oxygen atmosphere, the magnetization dependence of temperature M(T) and AC susceptibility data obtained from SQUID measurements clearly demonstrates that quadruple magnetic phase transitions can be readily detected at TM1~115 K, TM2~105 K, TM3~38 K and TM4~7 K. These findings suggest the novel magnetic transition for nickel manganite at low temperature TM4. The temperatures of observed maximums in χ’(T) and χ’’(T) parts of susceptibility are frequency independent, whereas the height of the peaks decreases with increasing frequency. The fact that TM4 does not shift with the increase of the frequency led us to the conclusion that there are no spin-glass/surface effect and/or blocking temperature/finite size effect connected to the NiMn2O4 ceramic. Therefore, the low-temperature peak TM4 in AC susceptibility is associated with ferromagnetic-like and antiferromagnetic-like magnetic transition in the interfacial FM/AFM internal structure. The exchange bias effect was found in a field cooled hysteresis loops at 5 K. The field cooling of the sample was under a magnetic field of 100 Oe and 10 kOe whereas the determined exchange bias fields were |HEB|=129 Oe and 182 Oe, respectively. The analysis of the results and comparison with literature data allowed us to conjecture that the mixed oxidation states of Mn ions and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattice orders tailor these interesting magnetic properties.

AB - One of the major challenges in the development of nanocomposites based on a polymer matrix and highly polar ceramic nanofillers is the lack of the compatibility between these two components. In order to improve the chemical interaction between titanate nanotubes (TTNT) and polymer matrix, such as nylon 11,3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was grafted onto TTNT. The effects of the TTNT chemical composition i.e. sodium content and solvent type on the grafting silane efficiency were thoroughly studied through CHN elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area and zeta potential measurements. The present study brings evidences supporting aqueous ethanol as more efficient reaction medium for TTNT functionalization with APTES, independent of the sodium content of nanotubes, when compared with pure water. It is also worth noting that within aqueous ethanol medium, TTNT with low sodium content are more efficiently grafted than TTNT with high sodium content. Successful APTES grafting decreases concentration of the hydroxyl groups on TTNT surfaces and enables its future application for the fabrication of nylon 11 nanocomposites.

AB - Structural, electrical and magnetic properties of nickel manganite ceramics obtained by sintering fine powders prepared by a complex polymerization method are given in this work. The phase composition of the synthesized material was examined by x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to analyze the obtained powder morphology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure of sintered ceramics. The activation energy of conduction Ea and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity B25/100 were calculated from direct current (DC) resistivity measurements. AB - The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of titanate nanotubes (TINTs) dispersion in the mechanical properties of Nylon 11 (polyamide 11) polymer. According ,to the existing literature small amounts of TTNTs used as reinforcement in polymer matrix improve properties such as tensile strength and stiffness. However, the addition of these nanoparticles may also lead to a decrease of strength of the composite if the nanotubes are not well dispersed in the polymer matrix. In this work two different routes were investigated to enhance the disl?ersion of TTNTs used as a reinforcement of nylon matrix nanocomposites: (1) chemical functionalization with 3-arninopropyltriethoxysilane; and (2) treatment with 2 kinds of surfactant - a cationic (CTAB) and an anionic (SDS). Characterization of the nanotubes was done by infrared spectroscopy, CHN elemental analysis, measurement of the specific surface area, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Nylon-II matrix nanocomposites were manufactured by microextrusion-microinjection and reinforced with 0.5 to 2.0 wt.-% of functionalized and surfactant treated nanotubes. Finally, mechanical and thermal properties as well as the microstructure of the nanocomposites were evaluated. The presentation will discuss the results and potential applications of these materials.

The presentation will discuss the results and potential applications of these materials.",

AB - In order to develop new nanosized filler compatible with the thermoplastic polymer Nyion-11, trititanate nanotubes (TTNTs) were synthesized by standard alkaline hydrothermal treatment of a TiO2 anatase powder in 10 M NaOH at 120 DC for 24 h. After the synthesis, the as-obtained nanopowder was washed differently (either with water or HC1), in order to prepare TTNTs with high and low sodium contents. Chemical functionalization of TTNTs was performed with 3-minopropyltriethoxisilane (APTES) coupling agent using two different reaction media (water and an ethanol/water mixture) with the aim to improve the bonding between inorganic hydrophilic fillers and hydrophobic polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential and CHN elemental analyses were used to elucidate the grafting mechanism of APTES at TTNTs surface. The obtained results shown that: APTES coupling agent is bounded covalently to the TTNTs surface (Ti-O-Si bond was identified after deconvolution of the IR bands at 800-1000 cm-1); grafted amount of APTES is almost independent of the reaction media; protonation of-NH2 groups shift the isoelectric point from pH 2.4 to pH 6.6; TTNTs kept their original size and shape after silanization.

AB - Intrinsic resistivity and carrier transport parameters of sintered nickel manganite samples (NTC thermistor grade) were determined using a Hall effect measurement system based on the van der Pauw method. Powder mixtures composed of MnO, NiO and with small amounts of CoO and Fe 2O 3 were free surface energy activated by milling in an ultra fast planetary mill for 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min. The powders were uniaxially pressed with 196 MPa into discs and sintered at 1200 °C for 60 min. Full characterization of nickel manganite samples was done using SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. The Hall effect was measured at different temperatures (room temperature, 50, 80, 100 and 120 °C) with an applied field of 0.37 T and also 0.57 T at room temperature. The activation energy E a (energy of conduction) and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity B 25/80, were calculated from measured resistivity values. The measured mobility, resistivity/conductivity, U-I plots, and Hall coefficients were mutually compared and correlated versus microstructure development and macroscopic parameters such as the powder activation time and ambient temperature. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008.

AB - In this work the DC resistivity of sintered nickel manganite NiMn2O4 (NTC thermistor material) was studied as a function of additional powder activation time in a planetary ball mill (0, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min). The activated powders and non-activated powder were sintered at different temperatures (900, 1050 and 12000C) for an hour. Structural changes were analyzed using XRD. Sample density, porosity and DC resistivity were measured on the same sintered samples. Correlations between sample density, porosity, and intrinsic DC resistivity vs. additional powder activation time and the sintering temperature were made. It was noticed that the resistivity falls with the increase of sample density (or increase of the sintering temperature).

AB - A novel uniaxial anemometer was created using a NTC thick film segmented thermistor to measure wind speed and direction. The anemometer operated on the principle of heat loss caused by the air volume flow and air speed. A NTC segmented thermistor served as a wind sensor in the anemometer. It was self-heated by a DC constant voltage. The self-heated DC current through the thermistor was changed by heat loss due to resistivity changes. The wind speed was varied from 1 to 15 m/s for different input air temperatures in the range of -20 to +40°C. The wind direction was determined by measuring voltage differences on the inner electrodes of the NTC segmented thermistor. The air temperature was measure by a cold NTC thick film segmented thermistor calibrated in the claim chamber. Anemometar inertia was measured at room temperature (at 25°C) and normal room humidity (at 50%). The results obtained enable fast optimization and implementation of a uniaxial anemometer in a 3D anemometer. © 2008 IEEE.

AB - Zinc-titanate ceramics were obtained by initial mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary mill for 15 min followed by sintering at temperatures 900-1100°C for 2 h. Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra for all samples were measured in the range 100-1200 cm-1. The same ionic oscillators were present in the measured spectra, but their intensities increased with the sintering temperature in correlation with the increase in sample density and microstructure changes. Optical parameters were determined for seven oscillators belonging to the spinel structure using the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. Born effective charges were calculated from the transversal/longitudinal splitting. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

AB - Far infrared reflectivity spectra of single crystal PbTe samples doped with 0.2 at% Fe were measured in the temperature range between 10 K and 300 K. These spectra show very sharp and narrow dips below 120 cm-1. The experimental data were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasmon-phonon interaction model. Two local modes were observed. The first one was noted between 130 cm-1 and 170 cm-1 depending on the temperature and the second more frequency stable one was noted at about 230 cm-1.

AB - Photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 – δ samples synthesised 18 years ago were measured and numerically analysed. The value of thermal diffusivity obtained on the aged samples was lower than the values obtained for fresh samples. Far infrared spectra of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 – δ samples synthesised 18 years ago were recorded and analysed enabling determination of reflectivity peak phonon frequencies present at room temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis and far infrared reflectivity measurements enabled determination of a slight change of the oxygen content with time. The YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 – δ samples synthesised 18 years ago still remained superconducting, which was confirmed by resistivity measurements of the samples between 50 K and room temperature where the critical temperature was reduced from 93 to 73 K. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalytical measurements were also performed confirming the composition of the sample.

AB - Polarized far- and mid-infrared reflectance spectra were measured at room temperature for the new mineral species jarandolite, CaB3O4(OH)(3), for the two principal directions. Thirty three vibration modes for (E) over right arrow parallel to(c) over right arrowc and 32 for (E) over right arrow perpendicular to(c) over right arrow were observed and analysed numerically. Symmetry analysis predicts 41 (E) over right arrow parallel to(c) over right arrow and 40 (E) over right arrow perpendicular to(c) over right arrow vibration modes that include lattice and O-H modes. Mode assignment was made based on the structure of jarandolite. The values of the mode frequencies (omega(TO)), the damping factors (gamma) and the oscillator strength (S) of each oscillator were obtained by fitting to a Lorentz model.

AB - Single phase complex spinel (Mn, Ni, Co, Fe)(3)O-4 samples were sintered at 1050, 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 30 min and at 1200 degrees C for 120 min. Morphological changes of the obtained samples with the siDtering temperature and time were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra for all samples were measured in the frequency range between 50 and 1200 cm(-1). The obtained spectra for all samples showed the presence of the same oscillators, but their intensities increased with the sintering temperature and time in correlation with the increase in sample density and microstructure changes during sintering. The measured spectra were numerically analyzed using the Kramers-Kronig method and the four-parameter model of coupled oscillators. Optical modes were calculated for six observed ionic oscillators belonging to the spinel structure of (Mn, Ni, Co, Fe)(3)O-4 of which four were strong and two were weak.

AB - Single crystal samples of lead telluride doped with cerium were made using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra in the temperature range from 10 to 300K are presented. The experimental data were numerically analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the plasmon-phonon interaction model and optical parameters were determined. Two additional local modes were observed at about 138 and 337 cm(-1). The origin of these local vibrational impurity modes was discussed.

AB - Single crystals of PbTe(Ni) were investigated by the photoacoustic method. They were produced using the Bridgeman method. These crystals have a sodium chloride cubic lattice and could be cleaved paralel to the plane orientation (200). They were of the n-type. Phase and amplitude photoacoustic spectra were measured using a transmision detection configuration set-up. Photoacoustic (PA) spectra (single and normalized) were numerically analyzed using the Rosencwaig-Gersho model. Thermal diffusivity and some electron-transport parameters were determined. These results were compared with existing results for pure single crystal PbTe. Thermal difusivity of PbTe(Ni) is a bit higher than the thermal difusivity of pure PbTe. This is the consequence of a decreasing concentration of the majority free carriers in the doped alloy.

AB - An investigation path starting from (Mn,Ni,Co,Fe)3O4 nanometric powder preparation, NTC thick-film characterization, realization and optimization of new planar thermistor geometries to custom design thermistors and their application for temperature and volume airflow sensors was recently determined. The aim was to make custom designed segmented NTC thermistors printed and sintered on alumina. Two types of volume airflow sensors were formed: indirectly heated and self-heated. A pair of segmented thermistors was placed in an air guide and connected to differential branches of the Wheatstone bridge. A heater was placed in the middle between the thermistors for the indirectly heated type, while for the self-heated type the same thermistors were self-heated by a constant current source. First the thermistor responses vs. the airflow (calibration curves) were measured, and then thermistor responses in time (inertia) to fast airflow changes from the minimum to the maximum. The results obtained could be applied in air conditioning for air guide flow regulation.
