AB - Purpose
This study aims to offer insights into a sounder understanding of tourist behavior and travel patterns by systematically identifying psychological manifestations reflected in the basic human value system in the pandemic-induced environment.

Design/methodology/approach
A large random sample (49,519 respondents from 29 European countries), generated from the core module Round 9 of the European Social Survey, was used. A post-COVID-19 psychological travel behavior model was constructed by using 12 variables within two opposing value structures (openness to change versus conservatism), shaping specific personalities.

Findings
Four types of tourists were identified by using K-means cluster analysis (risk-sensitive, risk-indifferent, risk-tolerant and risk-resistant). The risk-sensibility varied across the groups and was influenced by socio-demographic characteristics, economic status and even differed geographically among nations and traveling cultures.

Research limitations/implications
First, data were collected before the pandemic and did not include information on tourism participation. Second, the model was fully driven by internal factors – motivation. Investigation of additional variables, especially those related to socialization aspects, and some external factors of influence on travel behaviors during and after the crisis, will provide more precise scientific reasoning.

Originality/value
The model was upgraded to some current constructs of salient short-term post-COVID-19 travel behavior embedded in the core principles of universal human values. By separating specific segments of tourists who appreciate personal safety and conformity, from those sharing the extensive need for self-direction and adventure, the suggested model presents a strong background for predicting flows in the post-COVID-19 era.

AB - The chapter discusses the issues of the gradual transformation of low-density areas to spaces with predominant tourism function reflected in the expansion of second-homes. It attempts to identify a possible interrelation between the rural diversification process and the expansion of second-home tourism. For this purpose, a sample of 55 small villages in Southern and Eastern Serbia was investigated. The goal was to identify why these villages experience different fate, ranging from those that are likely to be ultimately abandoned to those gradually becoming seasonal “tourist” villages. The research utilized qualitative (observations and semi-structured interviews with permanent and seasonal residents) and quantitative data (official statistics of secondary sources). The findings from the field research enabled the creation of a framework for evaluating tourism development potential and existing rural capital. Additionally, statistical tests (correlations and regressions), in the identification of factors affecting the diversification of rural space, were performed. The study confirmed that small peripheral villages with seasonal vitality characteristics show economic reorientation toward the service sector. Expansion of second-home tourism and initiation of rural diversification process gives a hope that these villages may be sustained for the future.

AB - Recent tourism research showed that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, various psychological aspects affected people’s decisions and travel behavior (Miao et al., 2021; Yang et al., 2020; Gössling et al., 2020). Tourism has never experienced such a global collapse, fiercely supported by governmental decisions in holding back all tourism-related activities. This research attempts to offer insights into a sounder understanding of tourist behavior and travel patterns by systematically identifying psychological manifestations reflected in the basic human value system. Using statistical tests, hypothesized group divide based on specific value sets related to safety and conformity and on the opposite travel needs, being embedded in the hierarchy of human values. The study further indicated that defined risk-related cluster groups have different sociodemographic characteristics and geographical distribution.

AB - There are different aspects of perceptions of tourism sustainability. Yet, studies are limited in putting the focus on policy enablers’ perceptions. In this line, the policymakers represent those who contribute to managing and controlling tourism destination development. The aim of the paper is to identify the level of sustainability of tourism destinations in Serbia from a policy perspective (such as governmental bodies, contributors to management strategies, tourist organizations, etc.). By identifying the main tourism impacts from the three-pillar sustainability dimension, the research determines destinations’ operating sustainability. Based on a multi-staged methodology, data was collected by using a qualitative method (expert's judgment and content analysis of the existing strategic tourism development documents) and a quantitative method (219 half-structured deep interviews). A model is proposed that posts directions for the systematic organization of policymakers to infer conclusions on the current state of well-being of tourism destinations. Such a model enables a thorough assessment of the progress of sustainability, thus initiating strategic tourism development reforms.

AB - The purpose of this study was to examine if human values sets indicating basic motivational aspects, shared by active sport participants, could be used for the creation of a specific market segmentation model. While the exploration of motivation scales and sport tourist typologies was vast, although limited to small samples, this research constructed a model that tested its applicability and validity on the large general samples. By using data collections from the European Social Survey, the model allowed comparability between surveyed countries by cross-checking multiple psychosocial and demographic factors. The findings identified four main factors that determine active sport tourist values, while at the same time, multiple-discriminant analysis indicated the existence of three active sport clusters, indicating preferences of different sport tourist segments. Furthermore, the study analyzed potential demand markets according to the geographical distribution of active sport segments. The study confirmed that basic human values play an important role in explaining motivation aspects in sport- and tourism-related choices. Overall, the findings may assist marketers in monitoring changes in preferences of sport participants and focus on specific marketing strategies for different segments.

This study assesses the tourism potential of two almost depopulated villages in Serbia, Gostuša (Pirot) and Poganovo (Dimitrovgrad), and identifies their second-home tourism perspectives. They have similar geo-demographic characteristics, but different development patterns. A practical understanding of residents' perception was gained along with identifying the socioeconomic indicators. A comprehensive comparison is made to identify the diversification level of the rural economy in these villages. The study also assesses the rural capital and concludes that it is not realistic to expect fast and sustainable tourism development in these peripheral rural areas. Finally, the study extracts the factors of influence and predicts trends of the diversification process and second-home tourism expansion in rural areas of Balkan Mt.

More or Less Sustainable? Assessment from a Policy Perspective

AB - Sustainability of tourism destinations has become the main focus in planning and managing tourism development. Despite existing legislation and an institutional framework to safeguard balanced tourism growth, many destinations fail to properly address it. So far, studies are limited in exploring sustainable tourism impacts from a policy perspective. This study follows previous ones in using the triple bottom line sustainability approach to define tourism impacts. It argues, in particular, for a nexus between understanding of policy perception and sustainability, and it applies this to tourist destinations in Serbia to determine whether they are operating sustainably. For this purpose, the data were collected using a combination of multiple methods, involving interviews with policymakers and content analysis of strategic documents. This study further suggests a model that assesses the extent of the sustainability of tourist destinations. The results illustrate the importance of understanding policy perceptions in shaping and facilitating sustainability and informing policy enablers on how to improve and reform current tourism development. The model can be adopted and applied to any tourist destination facing an inevitable need to re-shape their tourism development plans and policies, while the implications address the need to build a participative policy approach to sustainable tourism development.

The model can be adopted and applied to any tourist destination facing an inevitable need to re-shape their tourism development plans and policies, while the implications address the need to build a participative policy approach to sustainable tourism development.",

AB - Vernacular architecture is an important segment of a cultural identity of the Balkan Peninsula. This study enables understanding of common types of vernacular architecture by comparing construction, function, and forms in rural areas in Macedonia and Serbia. The main aim is to identify similarities in vernacular rural dwellings dated from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The research employs a mixed-method approach, particularly the exploratory sequential design in terms of gathering data, analyzing and generalizing qualitative findings. Moreover, it applies comparative, historic and morphology methods over the evolution of various forms of housing in the Balkan Peninsula. The study was conducted in the rural areas dispersed over Macedonia and the southern part of Serbia. The concluding remarks point to a presence of similar constructive, spatial and typological forms of vernacular architecture, generally being related to the local natural environment, ethnic characteristics and traditional understanding of construction. This paper contributes to the limited academic work on this issue, along with its practical significance for posing findings, suggestions, and recommendations for preserving the Balkans architectural heritage and embedding it in the contemporary forms of rural tourism.
