AB - NTC thermistor paste for printing thermal sensors on alumina was formed of very fine Ni0.5Cu0.2Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 thermistor powder obtained by a combined mechanical activation/thermal treatment process, organic vehicle and glass frit. Sheet resistivity was measured using an R-test matrix and it was much lower than the value determined for pure nickel manganite thermistors. The thermistor exponential coefficient was calculated from the R[ diagram measured in the temperature range-30 to +120°C in a climatic chamber. Thick film segmented thermistors with reduced dimensions (optimized construction) were printed sequentially layer by layer, dried and fired at 850°C/10 min in air. Electrodes were printed of PdAg conductive and solderable paste. The samples obtained were characterized by electrical and thermal measurements. The obtained NTC segmented thermistors with reduced dimensions were applied in a thermal sensor for water flow in the water mains. It contained a cold thermistor for measuring input water temperature and a self-heating thermistor for measuring the dependence of water current on water flow rate at a set input voltage power. Initial measurements show that the thermal sensor system requires a low input voltage power making it much easier and safer for operation.

AB - A simple ball milling/thermal treatment procedure was applied to obtain fine thermistor powders. Three different powder compositions were analyzed–Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4, Cu0.25Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.25O4 and Cu0.4Ni0.5Mn2.1O4. XRD analysis showed that all three powder compositions had a cubic spinel structure. Correlation between the sintering temperature, structure and resulting electrical properties was analyzed on bulk samples. Thick film pastes were composed and segmented thick film thermistors were screen printed on alumina, dried and fired. SEM analysis revealed a typical dendrite structure with small grains and a developed surface area. Thick film sheet resistance was measured on a test matrix and the resistance decreased with increasing Cu content. The temperature dependence of sample resistance was measured in a climatic chamber enabling calculation of the material constant and activation energy. Aging of the obtained segmented thermistors was analyzed and the resistivity drift was 0.23% for the Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 NTC thick film thermistor confirming greater stability of thermistors containing Zn and Cu that in combination with the determined good thermistor characteristics make them good candidates for temperature and heat loss sensor applications.

AB - PbTe single crystals, doped with B, were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared spectra were measured in the temperature range between 10 K and room temperature. The experimental spectra were numerically analyzed, and optical parameters were calculated. Local impurity modes of boron were observed at about 150 and 240 cm−1. For all samples, after FIR measurements, the content of boron was measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Optical mobility of free carriers was calculated and it was the highest for the sample with only 0.014 at.% of boron in PbTe. A negative photoconductivity effect at 130 K for PbTe + B was also observed.

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO⋅2Al2O3⋅ 5SiO2, is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0–56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 °C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225°C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - Single crystals of lead telluride doped with Nd were synthesized using the Bridgeman method. Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured for PbTe samples with Nd content in the range 0.2-0.9 at.%. Optical reflectivity in the far infrared range was measured in the temperature range between 10 and 300 K for a highly polished PbTe sample with 0.6 at.% Nd. The experimental diagrams were numerically analyzed with a fitting procedure using a modified plasmon-phonon model. Two local modes were noted and their origin was discussed. Optical electron mobility was calculated for all analyzed samples.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra measured at room temperature were used to investigate vibrational properties of PtSb2 single crystals. The experimental results were analyzed using a dielectric function taking into account the existence of plasmonionised impurity-phonon interactions. Together with strong coupling three infrared active lattice modes at about 143, 187 and 202 cm-1 were observed. These results were discussed with respect to calculated literature vibrational frequencies. Electrical properties of single crystal PtSb2 were also measured at room temperature.

AB - The aim of this work is the investigation of experimental conditions for mechanochemical synthesis of spinel zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4). Application of this material include manufacturing of CO, H2, NO, NO2, i-C4H10 and C2H5OH gas sensors, production of transparent conducting electrodes, window coatings and anode for use in photoelectrochemistry. Starting powder mixtures of zinc oxide and tin oxide in the molar ratio, in accordance with the stoichiometrics of spinel zinc stannate, were mechanically activated by grinding in a planetary mill for various periods of time in the interval of 0 to 160 min. Changes of physico-chemical characteristics and microstructural parameters in the ZnO-SnO2 system after grinding were followed using surface area analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, while thermal behavior was examined by differential thermal analysis and sensitive dilatometer. The beginning of zinc stannate phase formation was noticed after 40 min of grinding, and prolonged grinding leads to the formation of spinel zinc stannate as the major phase with insignificant amount of unreacted zinc oxide and tin oxide. The formation of spinel was accelerated with the increase of sintering temperature, and monophased zinc stannate was obtained when powder mixture was grinded for 160 min followed by sintering at 1200°C.

AB - Freeze-drying, as a cryochemical powders processing method is applied in ZnO submicrometar to nanosized powders synthesis. The process involves rapid freezing of the sprayed precursor solution, drying under vacuum by sublimation of the solvent and the salt decomposition to oxide by thermal treatment. The precursor salt for ZnO powder synthesis was Zn(NO3)2·6H2O dissolved in distilled water (1 mol/dm3). The aqueous solution was sprayed by the twin-fluid atomization system, frozen using liquid nitrogen and dehydrated using a freeze-dryer operated at the temperatures from 243 K to 293 K and vacuum from 13 Pa to 20 Pa. A detailed X-ray analysis of the microstructure parameters such as the average crystallite sizes and shapes, crystal lattice microstrains and stacking faults of ZnO produced by thermal decomposition of as prepared Zn(NO3)2 at temperatures of 548 K and 898 K is realized by the pattern decomposition technique. The dependence between microstructural parameters and temperatures of thermal decomposition has been established.
