AB - Multi-phase ceramics based on ZrB2, TiB2 and doped with CrB2 and SiC were prepared by powder metallurgy and hot pressing to explore the possibility of obtaining multi-scale microstructures by super-saturation of complex (Zr,Ti,Cr)B2 solid solutions. Core–shell structures formed in TiB2 grains, whereas ZrB2 appeared to form a homogeneous solid solution with the other metals. Precipitation of nano-inclusions within both micron-sized borides was assessed by transmission electron microscopy and thermodynamics elucidated the preferential formation of boride inclusions due to the specific sintering atmosphere. In addition, atomic size factors explicated the precipitation of CrB2 nano-particles into ZrB2-rich grains and of ZrB2 nano-particles into TiB2-rich grains. The hardness of the constituent phases measured by nanoindentation ranged from 36 to 43 GPa.

AB - ZrB2 is widely recognized as the most prominent ultra-high temperature ceramic for aerospace applications, in view of its melting point above 3000°C, and despite it exhibits lower oxidation and ablation resistance as compared to HfB2, it has a much lower density. The addition of TiB2 further lowers the overall weight, which is a relevant factor for materials intended to flight, but it also worsen the oxidation resistance. In this work, different Mecompounds, where Me = Nb, Hf, Cr, V, are added to the ZrB2-TiB2 system to study their effect on the densification, microstructure and thermo-mechanical properties. By adjusting the processing and sintering cycles, fully dense multi-phase ceramics with density in the 5.3-5.7 g/cm3 range and hardness close to 24 GPa have been obtained. A common feature to all materials, is the formation of solid solutions and microstructural details obtained by x-ray diffraction, scanning and electron microscopy are highlighted. Particularly, we explored the nanotexturing of the shell within micron-sized boride grains of the matrix, which resulted from the preferential precipitation of Me-compounds with poor solubility within ZrB2 or TiB2 lattice. Preliminary bending strength and oxidation behavior of these intricate bulk multiphase ceramics are also provided.

AB - FeCoV alloys with high saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature, making them useful for high-temperature and power-dense applications (e. g. aviation device). In this study, we report the results of observing the structural properties of 49Fe49Co2V alloy produced by PIM / MIM technology. The starting granulate was prepared by mixing FeCoV powder with a low-viscosity binder. After injection, the raw “green” samples were first treated with a solvent and then thermally with the same aim of removing the binder. MIM technology is completed by high-temperature sintering of “brown” samples for 3.5 hours at temperatures from 1370 OC to 1460 OC in a hydrogen atmosphere, which provides the necessary magnetic and mechanical characteristics. Depending on the sintering temperature, structural parameters of particle size Dmax, Feret X, Feret Y were investigated and analysed.

AB - Perovskite ceramic material based on MgTiO3 is used in various types of electronic devices owing to its dielectric properties, high dielectric constant, and low losses. These features can be tailored by setting preparation conditions. Densification of magnesium titanate by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was the aim of this work. First, the mechanical activation in the highenergy ball mill was applied on the powder of MgO-TiO2 mixed in mole ratio 1:1. Prepared powder mixtures, activated for different times, were SPS sintered, at 1200 oC with a heating rate of 100oC/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied, and dwelled at this condition for 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5oC/min. The starting powders, activated mixtures, and sintered ceramics bodies were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was noticed for the nonmilled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, MgTi2O5 was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount, below the threshold of the XRD method. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB - Powdery mixtures of 50 mass% Fe, 4 mass% Pb, 3 mass% Zr and 43 mass% BaTiO3 were mechanochemically activated via planetary ball mill for time periods spanning from 30 min to 300 min and subsequently sintered for 2 hours at 1200 °C in the dynamic atmosphere of air. Of all the samples, the one activated for 270 min exibited the most prominent piezoelectric effect of up to 1.17 mV under the applied pressure of 113 kPa with the relaxation time of 85 s. The pressure dependence of voltage showed three successive, distinct domains in which the voltage rise differed, with the rate of 0.09 mV/kPa in the initial one (ranging from 0.00 kPa to 5.66 kPa of the external pressure), 0.01 mV/kPa in the second one (from 5.66 kPa to 56.60 kPa) and ultimately the plateau occuring from approximately 60 kPa onwards. When heated to 200 °C, the same sample manifested the biggest pyroelectric effect as well, being 0.55 mV with no external field applied, as well as 1.04 mV when subjected to the homogenous magnetic field of 50 kA/m, thus yielding a 89% net increase of the incited voltage observed.

AB - Ultra-high temperature ceramics, such as ZrB2, are convenient for application in hypersonic systems due to melting point higher than 3000 °C and excellent ablation resistance. For such application further improvement by addition
of second phases, including SiC or CrB2, has additional benefits in domain of oxidation behavior, while TiB, doping reduces material's weight. A powder mixture of ZrB2, TiB2, CrB, and SiC was high energy ball-mill trough four steps. Obtained milled powder was subjected to hot pressing following different thermal cycles. Subsequent annealing was applied to remove oxide phases and reduce micro-cracking. Due to different thermal treatment, various microstructure and hardness occur. We reached fully dense ceramics, and with different oxide-phases content depending on sintering conditions. Maximal obtained hardness was 24 GPa. Ongoing activity regards the study of the strength and oxidation resistance to assess the suitability of this multi-phase system for hypersonic applications.

AB - MgTiO3 is a material often used in different types of high-frequency capacitors, temperature compensating capacitors, and chip capacitors, so the enhancement of this material is still the focus of many research groups due to its remarkable dielectric properties. Outstanding features can only be achieved when the ceramics are highly dense. Densification of magnesium titanate by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was the aim of this work. Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by applying mechanical activation as the first step. Powders prepared in this way were SPS sintered, at 1200 °C with a heating rate of 100 °C/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied. The dwell time at this condition was 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5°C/min. X-ray diffraction was performed in order to establish the phase composition of milled powders and obtained ceramics. Differences between samples milled in various times intervals, as well as sintered ceramics were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of MgTiz0s phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis for the non-milled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, no MgTi2O5 was detected in XRD patterns, but this phase was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies, while the hardness of the SPS samples was measured at loads up to 10 N. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB - The research is based on the synthesis and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer and mechanically activated zinc oxide powder. In order to produce the polymer nanocomposite with enchanced electrical and mechanical properties different amount of the mechanicaly activated zinc oxide powder was used as a filler in PVDF polymer. PVDF (Mw∼530 000) was used without further purification. Mechanical activation of the powder was performed in a planetary mechanochemical activator (mill) with tungsten carbide balls. Activation times were 10 and 30 minutes. Ball to sample mass ratio was 40:1, while the rotation speed was 390 rpm. After the mentioned procedure, PVDF and nanocomposite films (50 μm) were obtained by casting the solutions into Petri dishes. The percentage of ZnO powder inside the polymer matrix was 5% for powder mechanically activated for 30 minutes, while for powders activated for 10 minutes the percentages were 2.5%, 5% and 10%. From the obtained results it can be concluded that the bigger amount of powder as a filler inside polymer matrix can be substituted with the prolonged time of mechanical activation time and have enhanced electrical properties also saving material and making the production of nanocomposites more economical.

AB - The synthesis and crystallographic site occupancy were investigated for MgAl2O4 with and without mechanical activation of the precursor powders. Heating to 1200 °C or higher resulted in the formation of a single spinel phase regardless of whether the powders were mechanically activated or not. Neutron diffraction analysis was used to determine cation site occupancy and revealed that mechanical activation resulted in a lower degree of cation site inversion compared to the nonactivated materials, which indicated that the powders were closer to thermodynamic equilibrium. This is the first study to characterize the effects of mechanical activation on crystallographic site occupancy in magnesium aluminate spinel using neutron diffraction. © 2022 by the authors.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - A novel high-precision model of a custom-made coaxial chamber used for broadband measurement of the relative complex permittivity at microwave frequencies is presented. The model is based on a surface integral-equation formulation of the method of moments tailored for bodies of revolution. All singular integrals encountered in the numerical analysis are calculated in a unified way with a novel integral transformation, which enables the precision of up to 12 significant digits using the 64-bit representation of real numbers. The dielectric parameters are estimated from the reflection-coefficient measurement of the chamber with a disk-shaped dielectric sample by comparison of the measured data with the high-precision numerical analysis of the chamber. The complete measurement procedure is illustrated and verified using samples of known dielectric properties.

AB - ZnO powder was mechanically activated for 10 and 30 minutes in a high energy planetary ball mill, and mixed with 2 wt% PVDF solution to obtain nanocomposite films (50 μm) by casting. ZnO powder activated for 10 and 30 minutes was used as filler. The difference in the dielectric properties for composites with the powder with prolonged time of mechanical activation was investigated, as well as the influence of ageing using dielectric measurements at higher frequencies. Dielectric measurement showed that the ageing process does not significantly affect the properties of the composites, while the prolonged activation times can be correlated with the changes in the values of the dielectric constant. The introduction of mechanically activated ZnO powders into the matrix leads to an increase in the dielectric permittivity of the polymer. Values of dielectric permittivity for different frequencies at 300 K decrease from approximately 3.1 (60 Hz) to 1.8 (30 MHz) for nanocomposite with ZnO activated for 10 minutes, while the permittivity for nanocopomosite with ZnO activated for 30 minutes permittivity was 2.6.

AB - Our research group has developed a method for measurement of complex relative permittivity of various dielectric materials in the frequency range from around 1 kHz up to several GHz. Material samples have preferably a disk shape. The thicknesses of the samples can be in a wide range, from about 10 μm (thick films) up to several mm. We have designed and manufactured a set of coaxial chambers, which we use as test fixtures. We have also developed two numerical-simulation programs for the electromagnetic analysis of bodies with rotational symmetry. One program is suitable for the low-frequency analysis. It is based on an electrostatic approach. The other program is based on an electrodynamic approach and it is tailored for microwave frequencies. In measurements, we use impedance meters and network analyzers to obtain the input impedance of a chamber with a sample. Thereafter, we implement our software for the electromagnetic modeling to extract the relative permittivity of the measured sample. As examples of verification of our method, we present here results for the relative permittivities of two sets of samples whose sizes are on the extreme limits of the method. The first set comprises poly (vinylidene fluoride) and mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle composite films, whose relative permittivities are around 1.8. The second set comprises large, high-density samples of spinel (aluminum magnesium oxide) ceramics, sintered under various conditions. The measured relative permittivities of these samples are around 7.5. In all cases, good agreement with other available data has been obtained.

AB - We have developed rotationally symmetrical coaxial chambers for measurements of dielectric parameters of disk-shaped samples, in the frequency range from 1 MHz to several hundred MHz. The reflection coefficient of the chamber is measured and the dielectric parameters are hence extracted utilizing a high-accuracy quasistatic numerical model of the chamber and the sample. We present this model, which is based on the method-of-moments solution of a set of integral equations for composite metallic and dielectric bodies. The equations are tailored to bodies of revolution. The model is efficient and accurate so that the major contribution of the measurement uncertainty comes from the measurement hardware.

AB - ZrB2 ceramics are considered potential materials for hypersonic systems in view of the melting point exceeding 3000 °C and excellent ablation resistance. Second phases, including SiC or CrB2, further improve the oxidation behavior, whereas a lighter phase, like TiB2 can decrease the overall weight. In this work, a powder mixture containing ZrB2, TiB2, CrB2 and SiC was mechanically activated using high energy ball-milling. Sintering was performed by hot pressing following different thermal cycles, and subsequent annealing to remove oxide phases and reduce micro-cracking. The microstructure and hardness of the dense ceramics are compared in relationship to the thermal history. Fully dense ceramics were obtained with different oxide-phases amount depending on the sintering cycle and hardness approaching 24 GPa were achieved. Future works will explore the strength and oxidation resistance of this multi-phase system to check its suitability for hypersonic systems.

AB - Mixtures of high purity powders of 50 mass% Fe, 4 mass% Pb, 3 mass% Zr and 43 mass% BaTiO3 were activated in a rotary ball mill for durations ranging from 30 min to 300 min; samples were then sintered in the air atmosphere for 2 hours at 1200 °C. Crystal structure prediction has been performed using Bond ValenceCalculation (BVC) method. Moreover, theoretical stability of theperovskite structure for synthesized and calculated Fe/Pb/Zr-codoped barium titanatecompounds has been investigated using the Goldschmidttolerance factor (Gt) and global instability index (GII).It was observed that magnetization of the system decreased after the sintering, with the most dramatic drop of 90.11% belonging to the sample activated for 150 min. In comparison with initial powders, X-ray powder diffractiondata confirmed the presence of newphases of BaFe12O19 and Ba1.696Ti0.228O3 in sintered samples. Utilizing the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), it was found that with the increase of activation time the morphology of the samples progressed from irregural, spherical grains to mostly rod-like ones. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis identified the presence of Pb and Zr occupying the same locations on the surface of sintered samples, whilst Fe was uniformly deployed regardless of the activation time.

AB - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by a solid-state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation for 30 min in a planetary ball mill was used to increase the reactivity of powders. Yttrium oxide and graphene were added to prevent abnormal grain growth during sintering. Samples were sintered by hot pressing under vacuum at 1450 °C. Phase composition and microstructure of sintered specimens were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Rietveld analysis revealed 100% pure spinel phase in all sintered specimens, and a decrease in crystallite size with the addition of yttria or graphene. Density measurements indicated that the mechanically activated specimen reached 99.6% relative density. Furthermore, the highest solar absorbance and highest spectral selectivity as a function of temperature were detected for the mechanically activated specimen with graphene addition. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve densification of MgAl2O4 prepared from mixed oxide powders, while additives improve microstructure and optical properties.

AB - Ceramic/polymer dielectric composites are widely used as components for electric devices, mainly because of their high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and flexibility. In order to increase dielectric permittivity, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been usually incorporated in the polymer matrix in large amounts. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of matrix, 5 wt.% of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell composite was added into the PVDF matrix. Prior to addition, five BaTiO3/Fe2O3 powders were prepared by different synthesis conditions. The changes in crystal structure and lattice dynamics of the obtained ceramic/polymer composite were correlated with changes in the phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler. Thermal analysis such as DTA/TG/DSC are useful methods to determine various parameters in ceramic/polymer composites. We were able to corroborate that differences in phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler have influence on formation of various PVDF allomorph modification, as well as a level of crystallinity.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid-state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation of 30 minutes in a planetary ball mill was used to increase the reactivity of powders. Yttrium oxide and graphene were added to prevent abnormal grain growth during sintering. Samples were sintered by hot-pressing under vacuum at 1450 °C. Phase composition and microstructure of sintered specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Rietveld analysis revealed 100 % pure spinel phase in all sintered specimens, and decrease in crystallite size with the addition of yttria or graphene. Density measurements indicated that the mechanically activated specimen reached 99.6 % relative density, while other specimens were above 96.5 % relative density. Furthermore, the highest solar absorbance and highest spectral selectivity as a function of temperature were detected for the mechanically activated specimen with graphene addition. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behaviour of MgAl2O4 produced from mixed oxide powders, while additives improve microstructure and optical properties.

AB - The increase in the utilization of ceramic/polymer composites as components for electric devices is mainly based on their high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and flexibility. The polymers usually have poor dielectric performances. In order to increase the dielectric permittivity, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been used as active fillers, and usually in large amounts, which have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. With the aim to enhance the dielectric properties of the composite without loss of polymer’s flexibility, 5 wt.% of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell powders, prepared by different synthesis conditions, was added into the PVDF matrix. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the starting BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, TG/DSC, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. We were able to corroborate that differences in the phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler have an influence on the formation of various PVDF allomorph modifications, as well as the level of crystallinity. The dielectric performances of the pure PVDF and polymer/ceramic composites were measured. An enhancement in the dielectric permittivity and decrease in the loss tangent were revealed.

AB - MnZn ferrites are one of the most common soft magnetic materials for application in microelectronics as a material for microwave components (transformers, transducers, inductors, magnetic fluids, sensors,). MnZn ferrites attracted attention due to wide range of relative magnetic permeability values (from 103 to 104), high resistivity (consequently low magnetic losses) as well as high thermal stability (high saturation magnetic flux density at high temperatures (Bs > 0.4 T at 100 OC) and a relatively high Curie temperature of about 230 OC).Recently, a variety of technologies have been examined for MnZn ferrite production: powder/ceramic injection moulding (PIM/CIM), chemical co-precipitation method, conventional ceramic processing, sol-gel or microemulsion. In this study a toroidal samples of MnZn ferrites with dimensions appropriate for applications in electronic industry (i.e. microelectronics: inner diameter 3.5 mm, outer diameter 7 mm, height 2 mm) were investigated. Magnetic properties were measured by hysteresis graph (B-H curve at level of magnetic excitation up to 1 kA/m and at different frequencies from 5 Hz to 10 kHz). Relative magnetic permeability as well as magnetic power (active) losses was analyzed as frequency dependent. Very stable maximum magnetic permeability was observed for magnetic field of 200 A/m in the frequency range from 50 Hz (μr ≈ 480) to 10 kHz (μr ≈ 450). Active power referred to unit mass of about 30 W/kg was recorded at frequency of 1 kHz (@ 280 mT). As the hysteresis losses are proportionally to the frequency (~ f) and eddy-current losses are proportionally to the square of frequency (~ f2) it was performed separation between these two components from total magnetic power (active) losses. Numerical fitting of this functionality on frequency were performed and analysed. The results obtained were compared with the catalogue data for other MnZn ferrite components for applications in electronics.
