AB - Over the past decade, magnetoelectric multiferroic materials
have been one of the highest priority research topics as they represent new generation of novel multifunctional materials. Multiferroics are characterized by the
coexistence of at least two ferroic orders and the presence of ferroelectricity and
ferromagnetism, as well as a strong coupling interaction between them (defined
as magnetoelectric effect). These properties are essential for new applications in
multifunctional devices. This article focuses on various fabrication techniques used
for preparation of multiferroic composite ceramics and thin films. The main goals
are comparing obtained composite and thin film structures and their properties
and acquiring a better understanding of the coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric orders that could surely be very helpful in the design of novel multiferroic
materials and hence elucidating their new applications.

AB - In this study, the adsorption behavior of silica adsorbents with different morphology and porosity has been examined in order to evaluate their use for the purification of wastewaters containing toxic environmental chemicals such as heavy metals and pesticide residues. Three different types of silica particles were investigated: (i) microporous silica core particles prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), (ii) mesoporous silica particles generated by the neutralization of highly basic sodium silicate solution and (iii) silica core-shell particles composed of mesoporous silica layers around dense cores. Monodispersed spherical silica particles produced from TEOS have a microporous structure but the lowest adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity of both heavy metals and pesticides. Polydispersed silica particles of irregular shape prepared from highly basic sodium silicate solution exhibit a mesoporous structure and high efficiency for the removal of heavy metals and pesticides from aqueous solutions. Monodispersed core-shell particles composed of a microporous core and a mesoporous shell also have high adsorption efficiencies in both combinations. Moreover, silica particles can be easily functionalized with ferrite nanoparticles, which allow the magnetic separation of silica adsorbents from aqueous solutions.

AB - Metastabile nanopowder ZnTiO3 pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa was submitted to conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931oC for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. Same compacts were heated with two-step sintering schedule with maximal 912oC and isothermal holding at 896oC, for approximately the same holding times as with isothermal. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most prominent samples. Sintered specimens microstructure showed differences introduced during last sintering stage by two heating schedules.
