abstract = "Old Serbian genealogies and chronicles are an important source for the study
of traditions related to the mission of the Thessalonian brothers, Holy Cyril and
Methodius, among the Slavic population in the ninth century. The necessary
precondition for their missionary work was to create a Slavic alphabet and then
to translate liturgical books into the Slavic language, i. e. into the language of the
Slavs who lived in the vicinity of Thessaloniki. At that time, various Slavic tribes
could easily communicate among themselves and differences among their dialects
(which would later develop into separate languages) were not significant. Old
Serbian genealogies and chronicles give an account of these important events in
the history of the Slavs: they describe the work of the Thessalonian brothers on
creating the Slavic alphabet and translating the most important liturgical books.
Different names are used to designate the Slavic alphabet, i. e. the letters that make
it: Serbian letters, Slavic letters, Bulgarian letters, etc. This terminological diversity
was obviously irrelevant for Serbian chronicle writers because they always implied
the same idea of the common Slavic alphabet., Стари
