AB - The hybrid multifunctional magnetic organic/inorganic composite materials, with addition of optimal filler type and quantities are attractive due to wide range of potential application, from various pressure sensors, through smart packaging, to tissue engineering and medicine. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of polyvinylidene fluoride/nanocellulose/magnetite@BaTiO3 hybrid films were investigated. The presented study revealed significant impact of nanocellulose (NC) content on formation of the polymorphs of PVDF, responsible for ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectric properties. The structural characterization, XRD and Raman measurements confirmed enhancement of the β and γ phases when the loading of NC higher then 4 wt% in multi-component hybrid films. The saturation magnetization value gradually raises with increasing amount of NC and reaches its maximum value of 41.2 emu/g at content of 4 wt% NC. Further, addition of NC decreases saturation magnetization value regardless of constant amount of magnetite, indicating optimal content of NC substrate for co-precipitation of Fe3O4 onto NC matrix.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - Magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG), obtained by reaction of 3-aminosilane and subsequently with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste Cell fibers (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA, respectively), and amino-modified diatomite was used for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione removal from water. Cell-MG membrane was structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR and FE-SEM techniques. The influences of operational parameters, i.e. pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass of adsorbent on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch system. The calculated capacities of 35.32 and 30.16 mg g-1 for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione, respectively, were obtained from non-linear Langmuir model fitting. Weber-Morris model fitting indicates the main contribution of intra-particle diffusion to overall mass transport resistance. Thermodynamic data indicate spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. The reusability of adsorbent and results from wastewater purification showed that Cell-MG could be used as general-purpose adsorbent. The adsorbent/adsorbate surface interaction was considered from the results obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Thus, a better understanding of the relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions to adsorption performances and design of novel adsorbent with improved properties was deduced

AB - Industrial/technological growth is directly connected with environmental pollution, but its influence can be minimized through pollution abatement approaches such as the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this study, novel porous amine-functionalized silicate minerals, specifically, cordierite was investigated for the removal of toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters. Cordierite supports were synthesized by mixing MgO, Al2O3 , and SiO2 powders in 2:2:5 molar ratios, and mechanically activated via ball milling in ethanol for 10, 40, or 80 min. Pellets were sintered by heating in air at 20°C min-1 to 1,350°C, for 2 h. Porous supports were produced by coarsely crushing the sintered pellets and mixing the crushed and sieved cordierite powder with 20 wt.% of a pore-forming agent, either nanocellulose or yeast. The resulting pellets were sintered by heating at 5°C min-1 to 700°C in air. The synthetic cordierite support was modified by treatment in poly-ethylenimine. Activated supports were then tested for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions. The phase composition of the cordierite supports was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36 mg g-1 for Cd2+ and 43 mg g-1 for Ni2+. This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metal removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid functionalized cordierite-based ceramic.

AB - Due to the development of industry and population growth in recent years, there are problems related to industrial wastewater that needs to be addressed in an environmentally friendly and economical way. All wastewater from plants, regardless of how it was generated, contains harmful substances that may have a certain degree of toxic impurities and must be treated if its quality does not meet the legal requirements. The purpose of wastewater treatment is the removal of harmful substances, which reduces the degree of its pollution, and at the same time achieves a certain economic and environmental effect. This technical solution ensures the optimization of the wastewater treatment process of the Ammunition Factory in Uzići. Wastewater is purified by a precipitation process using calcium oxide to remove colloidal substances and heavy metals. Most of the pollutants are of organic origin and their removal is performed by applying advanced oxidation processes using ozone and ozone in combination with ultrasound in order to achieve water quality that complies with legal regulations. Advanced oxidation processes are the most efficient methods for removing and degrading poorly soluble pollutants from wastewater. The purification process is optimized in terms of the technological process, concentration, treatment time and the amount of oxidizing agent applied. The degree of water pollution with organic compounds is determined on the basis of measurements of HPK, BOD and the concentration of heavy metals (lead, iron, chromium, copper, zinc, aluminum).

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

AB - The maximal allowed concentration (MAC) for As(V) in water decreased from 50 to 10 μg/l, by considering the harmful effects of arsenic on the environment and human health. In order to achieve the established rigorous requirements, it is necessary to develop new materials and design new forms of adsorbents that can reduce the concentration of arsenic in drinking water. In this paper, the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite hybrid sorbent was used to remove As(V) from aqueous solutions. 3D-printed wollastonite was obtained using the 3D-printing technique from methylhydrocyclosiloxane and calcium carbonate as precursors. Synthesis of adsorption material was carried out by depositing magnetite from an iron(II)-sulfate solution by potassium hydroxide on 3D-printed wollastonite. The adsorption properties of the hybrid adsorbent depend on the properties of magnetite and its porosity. This could be achieved by modifying the processes of depositing magnetite on the porous 3D-printed wollastonite. Characterization of the obtained material was performed using FTIR, SEM and TG-DTA. An investigation of the sorption properties of hybrid adsorbents was carried out for As(V) removal - one relative to the starting pH value of the solution, the adsorbent mass, the temperature and the adsorption time. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin- Radushkevich equations. Kinetics, using pseudo-first, pseudo-second and second order equations, as well as diffusion rate were determined using Veber-Moris and HSDM models. Determination of kinetics and adhesion parameters at three different temperatures enabled the calculation of thermodynamic and activation parameters of the adsorption process, which contributed to a better understanding of the adsorption mechanism.

AB - Comparative adsorption study related to benefits of parent media size, i.e. microfibrillated cellulose (MC) versus nanocellulose (NC) support, for the preparation of magnetite (MG) based high performance adsorbent for arsenic removal was conducted. Precipitation of MG on amino terminal branched organic structure, L, either linked by maleic acid residue on NC surface (NC-MA/L) or linked by oxalyl bridge on MC surface (MC-O/L) produced NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG adsorbents, respectively. Precipitation of nanosized MG on amino functionalized NC-MA/L and MC-O/L, performed according to optimized procedure, contributed to improved textural properties and adsorptive/kinetic performances of novel adsorbents. Adsorption capacity of arsenate, As(V), was in favor of NC-MA/L-MG (85.3 versus 18.5 mg g−1) while MC-O/L-MG exhibited faster kinetics (0.541 versus 0.189 g mg−1 min−1). Lower capacity of arsenite, As(III), removal, 68.3 mg g−1 for NC-MA/L-MG and 17.8 mg g−1 for MC-O/L-MG, were obtained. Calculated activation energies, 13.28 and 10.87 kJ mol−1 for NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG with respect to As(V), respectively, suggest, in accordance with results of Weber-Morris fitting, that internal mass transfer controls adsorption process. Model free adsorption kinetics confirmed beneficial uses of MC-O/L-MG due to low activation energy dependence on the extent of adsorption.

AB - This study presents the synthesis of porous cordierite- based ceramics and its surface activation by polyethylenimine/nano-CeO2 for the heavy metal removal. The synthesis was carried out by the addition of following powders: MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 in 2:2:5 molar ratios, respectively. The oxide(s) mixture was further processed in two sequential stages: i) ball milled in the ethanol for 40 minutes and palletized under the pressure of 3 t/cm2, as a pre-sintering process, and ii) the pallets were further sintered for 2h in the air atmosphere at 1350 oC, under a heating rate of 20 oC/min. The sintered mineral composite was crashed and sieved, and mixed with 20 wt % of nanocellulose, as a pore forming agent. Nanocellulose mixture was pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, under a heating rate of 5 oC/ min. The obtained synthetic cordierite was further tested as the adsorbent activated by polyethylenimine/ nano-CeO2 for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ -ions. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics models, and thermodynamic parameters were also analyzed, manifesting that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The phase composition of the pristine and activated cordierite was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metals removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid (nano)synthesized material.

AB - Unsaturated fatty acid (FA)–modified nanocellulose (m-NC) shows potential application in improving mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/m-NC nanocomposites (UPe/m-NC). A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m-NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross-linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox–Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross-linking capabilities on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m-NC is studied. Cross-linking density, modulus, and Tg of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification. © 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

AB - Production of high-performance nanocomposite materials obtained from unsaturated polyester resin, based on products of the waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) recycling, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes is presented. Di-hydroxy functional glycolysates, synthesized by catalytic depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with propylene glycol, were used for the unsaturated polyester resin synthesis. The structure of the obtained glycolysis product and unsaturated polyester resin were characterized by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and by acid, iodine, and hydroxyl value. Nanofillers were prepared by direct and two-step amidation of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Direct amidation with diallylamine produced multi-walled carbon nanotube-diallylamine reactive nanofiller. Two-step modification with diamines: hexamethylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine gave multi-walled carbon nanotube-hexamethylenediamine and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine nanofiller, respectively, whose amidation with methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acids gave multi-walled carbon nanotube-hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and multi-walled carbon nanotube-p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid nanofiller, respectively. Influences of vinyl functionalities on mechanical properties of nanocomposite were analyzed from tensile strength (σb), elongation (ϵb) and Young's modulus (E) determination. An increase of 97.4, 119 and 139% of σb was obtained for nanocomposites with addition of 0.25 wt.% of diallylamine, p-phenylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid and hexamethylenediamine/methyl ester of linseed oil fatty acid multi-walled carbon nanotubes, respectively. Short techno-economic analysis, performed on the basis of fixed and variable unsaturated polyester resin production costs, showed satisfactory potential profit, which could be realized by the implementation of the presented technology. © The Author(s) 2016.

AB - In this paper, synthesis of porous wollastonite-based ceramics was reported. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 oC for 30 min, yeast as a pore-forming agent was added to the as-obtained powders. Sintering regime was set up based on the results obtained by differential thermal analysis. Prepared mixture was pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 oC for 1 h. After the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by X-ray diffraction method and SEM. In a batch test, the influence of pH, contact time and initial ion concentration on adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr+6, and phosphate ions on synthesized wollastonite-based ceramics were studied. Time-dependent adsorption was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Weber-Morris model that predicted intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of overall process. High adsorption capacities 39.97, 21.87, and 15.29 mgg-1 were obtained for As+5, Cr+6, and phosphate ions, respectively.

AB - The structure of new cis-dichloro[(E)-ethyl-2-(2-((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-il)methylene)hidrazinyl)acetate-κ2 N]-palladium(II) complex was determined using a combination of XRD and IR measurements and DFT calculations. Inherent flexibility of its structure is evident from the complexity of its IR spectrum, which could only be theoretically reproduced as a combination of several closely related structures, involving rotation around C–O bond and changes in hydrogen interactions of its –OH group. Its thermal stability and decomposition were studied non-isothermally, and the thermal decomposition mechanism was proposed using correlation with DFT calculations at the molecular level. It was determined that the initial degradation step consists of the release of Cl free radical, which then reacts with both the initial compound and the degradation products. Besides the endothermic steps, there are exothermic ones, contributing to the complex shape of the DSC curve, consisted of overlapping endothermic and exothermic peaks. Deconvolution of DTG curve allowed identification of primary fragments of the initial degradation process and, in conjunction with DFT calculations, construction of the most likely reaction mechanism.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60°C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30°C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37°C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

abstract = "The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. AB - In this study, porous cordierite-based ceramics was synthesized. In the first step, MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 (all Aldrich, p.a.) were used. MgO and Al2O3 powders were calcined at 1000 oC for 2 h, in order to avoid hydroxides. They were mixed in 2:2:5 molar ratio, in order to form cordierite, Mg2Al4Si5O18. Ethanol was added to the mixture, and then milled in a Fritsch Pulverisette planetary mill, with 300 rpm, in air atmosfere. Times of activation were 0, 10, 40, and 80 min, while balls and vessels were made from ZrO2, and powder to balls mass ratio was 40:1. After milling, powders were dried, and then pressed under 3 t/cm2. Pallets with 8 mm radius were sintered in air at 1350 oC, for 2 h, heating rate was 20 oC/min. Sintered samples were crashed and sieved. In the secons step, the as-prepared cordierite was mixed with 20 wt.% yeast (0.1 g yeast + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). The other mixture was with 20 wt.% nanocellulose (0.1 g NC + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). Both mixtures were pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, with 5 oC/min heating rate, in air atmosfere. During the second sintering regime, porous cordierite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Cordierite was the most abundant phase in all sintered samples. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - The influence of modification and vacuum/supercritical CO2 (scCO2) drying methods on the surface properties, morphology and thermal stability of cellulose nanocrystals (NC) was presented in this study. Introduction of reactive vinyl groups on NC surface was performed by either direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed or sunflower oil fatty acids; or by amidation of maleic acid/ethylene diamine with methyl ester of fatty acid. Obtained modified NC (m-NC) were characterized using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy; and by determination of acid, iodine and ester values. Structural analysis of m-NC showed varieties of forms, from spongy to nanostructural non-uniform layered morphology with observable agglomeration, which confirmed morphology dependence on modification/processing methods Thermogravimetry-MS spectrometry showed different thermal stability and degradation pathways of NC/m-NC. Incorporation of 1 wt% of reactive m-NC in unsaturated polyester lead to high performance nanocomposites and contributed to increase of stress at break in the range from 76 to 93%.

AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 °C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 °C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr+6and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g–1, were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

abstract = "In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. AB - A new Ni(II) complex, [Ni(L)(H2O)] (1), with diethyl 3,3′-(2,2′-(1,1′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(hydrazin-1-yl-2-ylidene))bis(3-oxopropanoate) ligand (H2L) was synthesized as a potential chemotherapeutic agent. Polidentate ligand was coordinated to Ni(II) NNN-tridentately, in dianionic form, while monodentate water coordination completed square-planar geometry around metal. Structure in the solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy and the same coordination mode was observed in the solid state using IR spectroscopy and further verified by DFT calculations and electrochemical studies. Thermal stability of 1 was determined in both air and nitrogen atmosphere. Anticancer activity of 1 was investigated on acute monocytic leukemia (THP-1) and pancreatic adenocarcinoma (AsPC-1) cell lines. On THP-1 cells 1 induced powerful apoptotic response (ED50 = 10 ± 3 μM), which was revealed to be only partially caspase-dependent, with activation of caspase-8 as the dominant course. This suggested that experimentally validated covalent binding of 1 to DNA is not the only mechanism responsible for programmed cell death. This was supported with experiments on AsPC-1 cells. Although treatment of those cells with 1 resulted in poor apoptotic response, cell cycle changes showed concentration-dependent shifts indicating a dual mechanism of activity. This study also reviews the results of preliminary biological screening, which demonstrates that 1 displays a unique pattern of anticancer activity with at least two mechanisms involved.
