AB - The research on the historical currents of the Observant reform, its diffu-sion in the earliest stages, as well as its periodical local and global revivals throughout the following two centuries, is inextricably linked to the study of the promotion of cults of saints. Building on the types of sainthood pre-ferred by and partially formed in Mendicant circles (notably living saints, but also local saints), the Observant friars supported veneration of their contemporaries, creating thus an array of local beati whose cults frequent-ly gained wider recognition. This paper is examining the appearance and diffusion of saints’ cults among the reformed Dominican order in the southeastern Adriatic, that is, in the territory of Dubrovnik and Kotor from the first reformist attempts at the end of the fourteenth century to the Observant efforts united with the post-Tridentine ambience in the later sixteenth century. In addition to crucial texts by Serafino Razzi (who also described devotional objects and images), the analysis is mainly conducted.

Experiencing Disease and Medical Treatment in Renaissance Italy: Cardinal Pietro Bembo and his Circle

AB - This article, which examines contemporaries’ personal experience of illness in Renaissance
Italy, is part of a growing literature which concentrates on the patient rather
than the practitioner. The basis of this study is the correspondence of Pietro Bembo, the
well-known humanist, papal secretary and latterly Cardinal, with his cousin Gian Matteo
Bembo and his long-standing secretary and friend, Cola Bruno. These letters are revealing
of how a non-medical man understood and described illness in the sixteenth century, and
his personal experience associated particularly with “mal delle reni”, which he shared with
his friends and recommended treatments. It also reveals his attitude towards medical practitioners,
ranging from scepticism to fully embracing new therapies such as Holy Wood,
which was used to treat the new epidemic disease of the Great Pox. Indeed he shared
his enthusiasm for the efficacy of this drug with his great friend the physician Girolamo
Fracastoro, the author of Syphilis, the poem which he dedicated to Bembo, and also of the

AB - This chapter analyses the iconography of the frescoes in the church of St. Roch in
the village of Draguć (central Istria) as a visual source for contemporary accounts
of the origin and impact of the plague epidemic in 1527. It explores the eloquent
plague imagery as an integral part of an intriguing iconographic program dominated by the symbolism of the Eucharist. The appearance of particular motifs, as
well as the significance of the entire pictorial program, are examined as expressions of piety in a specific social and cultural context, using a wider comparative method regarding content and form. By applying this framework, the representation of the healthy and diseased, of divine and human bodies, will be shown to be the key to a better understanding the meaning of the pictorial program.

AB - The aim of the paper is to delineate the religious profile of the venerated local living saint Osanna from Kotor (1493-1565) through the typology of the sixteenth-century Dominican female living saints. The analysis of the occurrence and the use of mental and visual images with the theme of the Passion of Christ will be directed to determine how the same motifs were interwoven through the written, visual and sung media (in hagiography, iconography and laude singing) within a wider comparative context.

The Mystical Mind as a Divine Artist: Visions, Artistic Production, Creation of Images through Empathy

AB - By thinking in the context of two keywords,
motion and transformation, the mystical mind will
be analyzed not only as a receiver of real works of
art, but more properly as an inspired artist, able to
model and build his own work of art by empathizing
with his visual heritage: just as a painter or a
sculptor, to create his work of art, selects literary
sources and stylistic and iconographic models, so
the mystical mind builds the mental image on the
basis of its visual and intellectual heritage. The
mystical mind is infected with real images that live
empathically in the body of the devotee and can
be recalled and reactivated in the vision.
