(Johannes Brahms, 1833–
(Béla Bartók, 1881–1945),
(J. Peter
[Ludmila Ulehla, 1923–
[Olivier Messiaen, 1908–1992])
The doctoral dissertation The Works of the Composers of the Prague Group after World
War II in the Context of European Modernist Tendencies brings a new perspective on the
works of three significant figures of musical life in Serbia during the 20th century, Milan
Ristić (1908–1982), Ljubica Marić (1909–2003) and Stanojlo Rajičić (1910–2000),
composers who were a part of the Prague Group. The earlier musicological literature on
the work of these three Serbian composers, all of them Fellows of the Serbian Academy
of Sciences and Arts, did not contain a thorough study of their compositional role models.
Starting from listening to individual works, through the analysis of selected sheet music
scores, we decided to problematise precisely the appearance of elements of the poetics of
various European composers in the works of Ristić, Marić and Rajičić, including even
reaching for fragments of certain specific works by their European predecessors.
Composers who served as role models – first and foremost, Paul Hindemith
(1895–1963), Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) and Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), and then
César Franck (1822–1890), Béla Bartók (1881–1945), Igor Stravinsky (Игорь
1906–1975) and others – are among the most important composers of European art music.
Our goal was to show how these models were manifested, using 1) the methodological
approaches of Leonard Mayer, Mirjana Veselinović-Hofman, Zofia Lissa, J. Peter
Burkholder and Srđan Teparić; 2) an overview of foreign and domestic textbook literature
that could have been available to our composers; and 3) an overview of the musical trends
of the first half of the twentieth century. In three analytical chapters dedicated to Ristić,
Marić and Rajičić respectively, specific examples are used to demonstrate which models
are found in which works; using comparative analytical methods, we discover how they
were manifested and how they influenced the physiognomies of the analysed pieces.
Consequently, we asked why our composers needed role models at all, which directed the
discussion of each analytical chapter towards thinking about the composers’ poetics
(given the lack of their self-reflective texts), the reception of the pieces, or even their
purpose. It is important that none of the models are obvious, so we discovered them
through the processes of searching, analysing and listening. To the greatest extent, the
models are revealed at the level of compositional technique.
We also considered the reasons and goals that Milan Ristić, Ljubica Marić and
Stanojlo Rajičić could have had before them when reaching for European models. Living
in an unstable post-war environment, in which it was difficult to find the right creative
path, relying on role models from the European musical heritage provided them with a
security blanket. Bearing in mind the accelerated development and modernization of
Serbian musical culture during the twentieth century, but also the numerous interruptions and setbacks during that process, one concludes that Milan Ristić, Ljubica Marić and
Stanojlo Rajičić found a way to upgrade the canon of Serbian art music by relying on role
models.",
