AB - Y0.8−xGdxF3:Yb/Er mesocrystals with a biocompatible surface and diverse morphological characteristics were successfully synthesized using chitosan-assisted solvothermal processing. Their structural properties, studied using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were further correlated with the up-conversion emission (λexc = 976 nm) recorded in function of temperature. Based on the change in the visible green emissions originating from the thermally coupled 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels of Er3+, the corresponding LIR was acquired in the physiologically relevant range of temperatures (25–50 °C). The detected absolute sensitivity of about 0.0042 °C−1, along with the low cytotoxicity toward both normal human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) and cancerous lung epithelial (A549) cells, indicate a potential for use in temperature sensing in biomedicine. Additionally, their enhanced internalization in cells, without suppression of cell viability, enabled in vitro labeling of cancer and healthy cells upon 976 nm laser irradiation.

AB - Currently, more than 1.5 billion people (nearly 20% of the world population) are living with hearing loss. By 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss and at least 700 million will require hearing rehabilitation. While conventional hearing aids greatly improve the lives of people with hearing difficulties, they cause problems by being worn externally (e.g. stigma, bathing). We present here an innovative implantable hearing aid microphone that, when combined with a cochlear implant, could represent a fully internal hearing aid. To achieve an internal microphone, our technology utilizes a novel fiber-optic approach. The fiber-optic sensor is a kind of an optical vibrometer aimed to be used as a totally implantable fiber-optic microphone for hearing aids. The sensor is invisible as it is placed inside the human middle ear and is capable to detect the amplitude of the incus vibrations over the range of few picometers to a couple of nanometers, which corresponds to an SPL of about 35 to 90 dB. The basic operation principle is high-coherence fiber-optic interferometry. Online signal processing allows permanent conversion of the acoustical into an electrical signal over the audio frequency range from 100 Hz to 8 kHz in real time.

AB - We present a microfluidic platform based on a fiber-optic three-way Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), aimed to measurement of the refractive index (RI) of liquids and characterization of suspended glass particles (cylinders) simultaneously. The measurement principle is based on low coherence interferometry, where the maximum position of the interferogram Gaussian envelope depends on the optical path difference (OPD) between the measuring and the reference arm of the MZI. An algorithm was developed for calculating the refractive index of liquids and glass particles, as well as for finding the particle diameter from the raw photodetector signals. The physical particle diameter is calculated from the measured particle transit time while passing through the test beam. We found very good agreement between the experimental results and the literature data on the examined liquids refractive index and dimensions and refractive index of suspended particles. The accuracy of the refractive index measurement was about 1 %, mainly determined by the accuracy of position reading of the mechanical scanner. The minimal sample volume can be as small as 1 µl is capable of measuring the refractive index of different liquids and gases and their suspensions simultaneously. The proposed method is attractive for label-free biological, biochemical and chemical sensing because of its high sensitivity and accuracy and self-calibrating feature.

AB - In this investigation, samples of strontium-gadolinium-oxide (SrGd2O4) doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4 and 6 at%) and constant Ho3+ (1 at%) contents and co-doped with Bi3+ (2 at%) were prepared using the glycine-assisted sol–gel method. The pure orthorhombic SrGd2O4 phase, space group Pnma, was revealed using X-ray diffraction in all samples. Transmission electron microscopy discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring approximately 150 nm in size. The inclusion of Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology since the formation of larger grains was observed, with sizes reaching up to ∼1.7 μm. The uniform distribution of all constitutive elements was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In all samples, up-conversion emission spectra revealed two dominant green (540 and 550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) emission lines, due to the 5F4,5S2→5I8, 5F5→5I8, and 5F4,5S2 → 5I7 transitions, respectively. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emissions, shorter luminescence decay, and the highest quantum yield. Additionally, a significant decrease in the energy band gap value was detected using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for this sample. Methylene blue was used as a test pollutant to investigate its photocatalytic efficiency under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that Bi3+ co-doping deteriorates the photocatalytic efficiency of the SrGd2O4:Yb3+/Ho3+ phase by reducing hydroxyl radical formation.

AB - Nanopowders of up-conversion SrGd2O4 orthorhombic (Pnma) phase co-doped with different Yb3+ (1, 2.5 and 5 at%) and constant Er3+ (0.5 at%) ions were successfully prepared via sol-gel assisted combustion. Rietveld refinement indicated unit cell lattice parameters increase with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doping. Scanning transmission electron microscopy with corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that obtained powders are composed of agglomerated nanoparticles that have a uniform distribution of all constituting elements. Photoluminescence measurements implied intensification of the up-conversion (UC) emission in the visible part of spectrum with the increase of Yb3+ content, which is followed by a significant change in the green to red ratio. Two-photon UC processes are established as a result of Er3+ f-f electronic transitions: green emission at 523 and 551 nm (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) as well as a red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2). The highest value of absolute quantum yield of 0.055% is determined for SrGd2O4 nanoparticles doped with 0.5 at% of Er3+ and co-doped with 5 at% of Yb3+ (λexc = 976 nm, power density 200 W/cm2).

AB - Novel hybrid core-shell structures, in which up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm core converts near-infrared (NIR) to visible (Vis) light via multiphoton up-conversion processes, while anatase TiO2-acetylacetonate (TiO2-Acac) shell ensures absorption of the Vis light through direct injection of excited electrons from the highest-occupied-molecular-orbital (HOMO) of Acac into the TiO2 conduction band (CB), were successfully synthesized by a two-step wet chemical route. Synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2-Acac powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and photoluminescence emission measurement. Tetracycline, as a model drug, was used to investigate the photocatalytic efficiencies of the core-shell structures under irradiation of reduced power Vis and NIR spectra. It was shown that the removal of tetracycline is accompanied by the formation of intermediates, which formed immediately after bringing the drug into contact with the novel hybrid core-shell structures. As a result, ~80% of tetracycline is removed from the solution after 6 h.

AB - One of the greatest environmental goals for the aluminum alloys industry is generating higher quality products by introducing cleaner input materials while maintaining low production costs. A typical dilemma for the master alloy producers is the cleanness level of the master alloy since insoluble inclusions could serve as inoculants during the solidification process. In this work, commercial Ti5B1 master alloy is used for grain refinement of Al7Si4Cu aluminum alloy and compared with the cleaned master alloy that contained a lower amount of residual refractory oxides and salts. Metallography analysis was used for grain size measurement while Computer Aided Cooling Curve Analysis was used for assessment of the undercooling and heat release values. In all instances, specimens treated with the cleaned master alloy showed smaller grains in the final structure and lower undercooling values. The difference in released heat between liquidus and recalescence temperatures was about 25% in specimens where added 0.66 wt% of cleaned master alloys compared to specimens where the commercial master alloys were added. Using cleaner Ti5B1 master alloy with a higher number of TiAl3 and TiB2 particles improves its grain refinement efficiency and transmits fewer impurities in produced parts. Producing cleaner master alloy would be beneficial from economic and environmental aspects by increasing its value and service time of produced parts besides simplifying the recycling process at the end of parts life-cycle.

AB - We present a combination of micromachined optofluidic platforms equipped with a fiber-optic sensing configuration based on a three-path Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for simultaneous measurement of the refractive index of liquids and the autocalibration in dynamic regime. The sensing principle is based on the low-coherence interferometry, characterized by a generation of Gaussian enveloped interferograms, for which the position of its maximum depends on the optical path difference (OPD) between the sensing and reference arm of the MZI. When liquid flows through the central microchannel of the optofluidic platform it crosses the light beam between the two optical fibers in the sensing arm causing the OPD change. An algorithm has been applied for the calculation of the refractive index of liquids out of the raw interference signals. We obtained a very good agreement between the experimental results and literature data of refractive indices of subjected fluids. The accuracy of refractive index measurement is approximately 1%, predominantly determined by the accuracy of reading the position of the mechanical scanner. The proposed sensor is attractive for the label-free biological, biochemical, and chemical sensing owing autocalibration and high sensitivity yet consuming a very small sample volume of 1 µL. It is capable to measure the refractive index of various liquids and/or gases simultaneously in the process.

AB - In the supplement, a few audio records in a time duration of about 1-3 min, which are acquired during experiments performed on skull head #7587, are given. The signals have been on-line processed by TIFOS system and recorded by an HP notebook audiocard without any frequency equalizing. The sound pressure level was measured by Bruel & Kjaer 2250 sound meter (dBA, slow). The sound of piano and violin in Schubert’s Rondo in Fig. S1a are of high fidelity. High frequency tones in the aria from “La-Traviata” performed by famous Russian-Austrian operatic soprano Anna Netrebko (Fig. S1d) are also very clear and dynamic. The famous speech of Martin Luther King (Fig. S1b) is completely intelligible, as well as the resignation speech of former British prime minister Theresa May (Fig. S1c). The individual characteristics of the well-known voices are easily recognizable.

S1c). The individual characteristics of the well-known voices are easily recognizable.",

AB - Many retina diseases require very often a delicate surgical intervention, which is performed by different minimally invasive instruments and tools. They must be miniature but still robust and capable to accurately determine the separation to the retina target in real-time. Because of that they have to be instrumented with a sensing technique, which may interactively read the actual distance toward the target without any risk of injuring the retina. In this paper, we present a fiber-optic sensing technique suitable for integration into surgical instruments. The technique is composed of low- and high-coherence interferometry that allows sub-micrometer absolute distance measurement between the surgical tools and retina without any scanning unit in the reference arm. The technique is demonstrated utilizing the experimental setup based on a 2x2 fiber-optic coupler simultaneously powered by an SLD and VCSEL as low- and high-coherence light sources, respectively. The sensing arm was directed toward the eye model, made of the inner silicon layer and outer polylactide (PLA) 3D printed eyeball. The distance between the sensing fiber tip and target has been measured using both low-and high-coherence interferograms over a rather large dynamic range of about 2 mm with the accuracy of 655 nm that corresponds with λ/2 of the high-coherence light source.

AB - We present a fiber-optic sensing configuration based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) embedded into the MEMS optofluidic platform for measurement of index of refraction of liquids in dynamic regime. The sensing principle is based on the low-coherence interferometry, characterized by generation of Gaussian shape interferograms, which maximum position depends on the optical path difference (OPD) between the sensing and reference arm of the MZI. When liquid flows through the central microchannel of the optofluidic platform it crosses the light beam between the two optical fibers in the sensing arm causing the OPD change. An algorithm has been applied for calculation of index of refraction of liquids out of the raw interference signals. We obtained very good agreement between the experimental results and literature data of index of refraction of subjected fluids. The accuracy of index of refraction measurement is about 1 % that is predominantly determined by accuracy of reading the position of mechanical scanner.

AB - In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study about a novel fiber optical vibrometer, aimed to be used as a totally implantable fiber-optic microphone for hearing aids. The sensor head, implanted inside the human cadaver middle ear, detects the amplitude of the incus vibrations, which are produced by an external acoustical source. The probe beam of coherent vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) radiation is directed to the incus and the phase-modulated reflected beam is captured and demodulated. The problem of interferometric fading was solved using two quasi-quadrature signals, passively produced by the 3 × 3 single-mode fiber-optic coupler, processed by a special embedded algorithm. The implanted optoelectronic module works with very low-power consumption, performs real-time signal processing and outputs an analogue signal proportional to the incus vibration. The amplitude of the incus vibrations at different sound pressure levels (SPL) from 40 to 90 dB and at frequencies from 100 Hz to 10 kHz were measured by the implanted system. The system was evaluated on five cadaver skulls. The measured amplitudes were in the range of 1 pm to 5 nm, depending on the subjected skull and the applied sound pressure.

AB - In this paper we present the results obtained by contactless measurement of vibration of the incus inside the middle ear of a human cadaver, exposed to an external calibrated sound source. The measurement configuration was a Michelson fiber-optic interferometer based on a 3x3 fiber optic coupler, with a VCSEL source. The interferometric signal fading was solved using two quasiquadrature signals and specialized signal processing. The ossicle reflection was augmented by a very light piece of retroreflective material attached to the bone. We measured the amplitude of vibration at different sound pressure levels, independently monitored by a decibel meter placed in the proximity of the cadaver ear. The accuracy of the measurement technique was proved by using a calibrated piezo transducer exposed to vibrate with amplitude of 7nm at 1kHz. We performed the experiments on 8 cadavers in total. The measured amplitudes were found to be in the range between 1 pm and 1 nm, under the sound excitation of 40-90 dB SPL @ 1kHz, respectively.
