AB - Thermodynamic parameters (densities, viscosities, speed of sound, and refractive index) of four series of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range from 15 to 60 °C for the process of geopolymerization. Mixtures of Na2SiO3and NaOH of different molar concentrations (from 2M to 8M with step 2) were used as an alkaline activator. The sample with the highest NaOH concentrationalso shows the highest values of all thermodynamic parameters.Metakaolin, obtained by calcination of kaolin at 750 °C, was used as the starting material. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Spectroscopy. Results of FTIR analysis correlated with results of Raman Spectroscopy. Due to the polymerization process, the changes in the phonon spectrum were confirmed. The different concentra-tions of activators do not notably change the Si/Al ratio.

AB - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz.

AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - In this work, spinel magnesium cobalt ferrites (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) were synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method. Magnesium nitrate, cobalt nitrate and iron nitrate were used as oxidizers and citric acid was used as a reducing agent. The effects of cobalt ions on structural and morphological properties were investigated and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A cubic spinel structure formed with a varied distribution of cobalt and magnesium ions on tetrahedral and octahedral sites that depended on their content. All ferrite powders consisted of multigrain agglomerates. Optical properties were investigated by UV- vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity of as prepared samples was evaluated by measuring the rate of photodegradation reaction of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. After 240 min, compared to other samples, the sample labeled as Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the best rate of photodecomposition of MB resulting in reduction of 90% of its initial concentration.

AB - Cobalt/magnesium ferrites with various mole percentage ratio of the metals (obtained structures are CoxMg1-xFe2O4 with x being 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) were synthesized by sol-gel combustion synthesis using glycine as fuel, following the rules of propellant chemistry. The powders were then sintered at 700 °C for 3 hours. Obtained powders were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman
spectroscopy, UV/vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Investigation of the magnetic properties was also conducted by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The obtained powders were proved to be phase-pure cubic spinels which formed agglomerated micrograins. Series of photocatalytic experiments of methylene blue degradation were done.
The influence of different experimental conditions was investigated including variations of: pH values, concentrations of the pollutant, masses of the photocatalyst, different light sources and therefore different light irradiation. Interesting results, including enhancement of the degradation rate with the introduction of cobalt into MgFe2O4 and decrease of the degradation rate with further increase of cobalt content and formation of hard agglomerates, open new possibilities for further investigation of the utilisation of Co/Mg ferrites as photocatalysts.

AB - Nanocrystalline cobalt magnesium ferrites with varying cobalt and magnesium content (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, 0<x<1) were synthesized using the sol-gel self-combustion method with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 C for 2 hours. Structural characterization was performed using Xray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. It confirmed the formation of agglomerated nanocrystalline ferrites with an inverse cubic spinel structure. The optical band gap energy was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. It reduced with increased Co content. Visible light photocatalytic activity was tested using natural and artificial light sources through a series of experimental degradations of the methylene blue (MB) solution.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.",

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350°C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3 core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and electrical properties was detected and explained.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - The initial-stage of sintering plays a significant role in determining the final microstructure that defines the main characteristics of electroceramics materials such as functional properties. In this article non-isothermal sintering of non-activated and mechanically activated SrTiO3 samples was investigated up to 1300 °C. Dilatometric curves indicate that mechanical activation leads to an earlier onset of sintering, suggesting that it should lead to a more homogenous and denser sintered product. Analysis of the initial stage of sintering reveals that the sintering process of all examinated samples consists of two or three overlapping single-step processes, with a change in the dominant mass transport mechanism. The values of apparent activation energy of the considered single-step process exhibit a significant decrease with an increase in mechanical activation time. The values of the density of samples after isothermal sintering indicate that the final stage of sintering has not been reached by 1300 °C. © 2018 Authors.

© 2018 Authors.",

AB - Semiconductor TiO2 photocatalysis is a heterogeneous catalysis, where the photons of the sun or artificial light source are activating the catalyst that enters in reactions. The targeted real-world applications are in environmental protection and remediation such as wastewater treatment, air purification and decomposition of harmful organic pollutants. In this talk, I present the synthesis of nanotubular, thin TiO2 coatings with altered morphology and crystallinity made by anodization technique. The influence of the anodization parameters and post-synthesis annealing conditions on the photocatalytic methyl orange dye decomposition was assessed. Different morphology, crystallinity and introducing a dopant into lattice increase electron transport and electron lifetime which further improve photocatalytic activity.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650°C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films. AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.

AB - Considering geopolymers as inorganic polymers, they are actually amorphous network of interlinked silicate and aluminate groups, so they could be prospective ceramic precursors for materials with defined dimensions obtained by casting and firing, but not from powder processing. In this research, the starting material is metakaolin, which was obtained by calcining domes tic kaolinite clay. Initially, four series of alkaline activators of NaOH and sodium silicate have been used. Activators present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M. The prepared geopolymer slurries were cast into the designated near shape at room temperature and after that at 60oC. In fact, the post-synthesis curing process (28 days) has an important role in the obtaining good characteristics of geopolymers. Densities, viscosities and refractive index of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60oC of process of geopolymerizations. Based on the obtained results of investigated parameters have been selected to predict the properties of materials. All geopolymer samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS analysis and Raman spectroscopy providing complementary and valuable information of the investigated materials. This route of ceramics production has advantages associated with producing an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean new technology of geopolymer materials.

abstract = "Considering geopolymers as inorganic polymers, they are actually amorphous network of interlinked silicate and aluminate groups, so they could be prospective ceramic precursors for materials with defined dimensions obtained by casting and firing, but not from powder processing. This route of ceramics production has advantages associated with producing an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean new technology of geopolymer materials.",

AB - The influence of the mechanical activation of ZnO nanoparticle fillers on the structural and electrical properties of the matrix of poly(vinylidenefluoride)-ZnO (PVDF-ZnO) films was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed that mechanical activation in a high energy planetary ball mill reduces the size of ZnO particles. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that PVDF crystallized predominantly as the γ-phase. Non-activated ZnO filler reduces the degree of the crystallinity of the matrix and promotes crystallization of α-phase of PVDF in the film, while the fillers activated for 5 and 10 min induce crystallization of β-phase, indicating that mechanical activation of the filler can be used as a general method for fabrication of PVDF composites with increased content of piezoelectric β-phase crystals. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements show that polymer composite with the high content of β-phase (with ZnO filler activated for 5 min) exhibits the highest value of dielectric permittivity in 150-400 K range of temperatures. Kinetic analysis shows combined effects of increased surface area and increased concentration of surface defects on the interactions between polymer chains and activated nanoparticles. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.
