AB  - A single p-type crystal of the mineral, pyrite (FeS2) was characterized photoacoustically using the transmission detection configuration. Photoacoustic (PA) amplitude and phase spectra were measured using a specially constructed PA cell. The PA signals of different sample thicknesses were measured using an experimental setup with a semiconductor red laser (80 mW) as the optical source. The obtained amplitude and phase spectra for different thicknesses were numerically analyzed enabling determination of thermal diffusivity, mobility of minority free carriers and other parameters characteristic for this material. © EDP Sciences/Societé Italiana di Fisica/Springer-Verlag 2008.

Investigation of zinc stannate synthesis using photoacoustic spectroscopy

AB  - Mixtures of ZnO and SnO2 powders, with molar ratio of 2:1, were mechanically activated for 40, 80 and 160 minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and non-isothermally sintered up to 1200°C with a heating rate of 5°C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained a correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions as well the samples microstructure characteristics was discussed.

AB  - Thermal diffusivity and electric transport properties of fourteen years old superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x pellets were obtained using the photoacoustic transmission technique and then compared with freshly made superconducting samples. The theoretical model for photoacoustic (PA) detection configuration is given. The measured amplitude and phase PA signals, as a function of the modulation frequency, were numerically analyzed. The thermal diffusivity, the coefficient of the carrier diffusion, optical absorption coefficient and the excess carrier lifetime were calculated. The thermal diffusivity of freshly produced samples decreased, after ageing, from about 1.3·10-6 to about 6.1·10-7 m2/s.

Characterisation of dispersive systems using a coherer

AB  - The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

AB  - Freeze-drying, as a cryochemical powders processing method is applied in ZnO submicrometar to nanosized powders synthesis. The process involves rapid freezing of the sprayed precursor solution, drying under vacuum by sublimation of the solvent and the salt decomposition to oxide by thermal treatment. The precursor salt for ZnO powder synthesis was Zn(NO3)2·6H2O dissolved in distilled water (1 mol/dm3). The aqueous solution was sprayed by the twin-fluid atomization system, frozen using liquid nitrogen and dehydrated using a freeze-dryer operated at the temperatures from 243 K to 293 K and vacuum from 13 Pa to 20 Pa. A detailed X-ray analysis of the microstructure parameters such as the average crystallite sizes and shapes, crystal lattice microstrains and stacking faults of ZnO produced by thermal decomposition of as prepared Zn(NO3)2 at temperatures of 548 K and 898 K is realized by the pattern decomposition technique. The dependence between microstructural parameters and temperatures of thermal decomposition has been established.

A detailed X-ray analysis of the microstructure parameters such as the average crystallite sizes and shapes, crystal lattice microstrains and stacking faults of ZnO produced by thermal decomposition of as prepared Zn(NO3)2 at temperatures of 548 K and 898 K is realized by the pattern decomposition technique. The dependence between microstructural parameters and temperatures of thermal decomposition has been established.",
