AB  - У раду се разматра музичка пракса врањских Рома, 
који неговањем и креативним интерпретацијама локалног наслеђа 
превазилазе локалне границе, популаришући Врање на фестивалимаи 
другим манифестацијама у земљи и свету. У раду се најпре разматрају 
дискурси и праксе везани за стереотипизирану слику „Бориног Врања“ 
у оквиру које ромски музичари заузимају значајно место. Сам Бора 
Станковић оставио је описе Рома као изванредних музичара, виртуоза 
у свирању и певању. У другом делу рада истражује се пут који су ромски трубачи прешли од локалних до међународно признатих музичара. 
Последњи део рада посвећен је меморијализацији њиховог доприноса 
– подизању споменика Бакији Бакићу, симболу трубаштва југа Србије, 
као и дискурсима и праксама сећања и памћења.
AB  - Roma musicians are one of the key symbols of the city of Vranje (southern 
Serbia). This is the case thanks to Bora Stanković’s literary work, in which Roma 
musicians were depicted as excellent musicians, as extremely adept at playing, 
singing, and dancing, and as extremely original with a high artistic reach that 
led to international recognition. Through creative interpretations and the nurturing of local musical legacy, Roma musicians have transcended local borders, 
and have made Vranje popular at festivals in Serbia and internationally. This 
article first considers discourses and practices linked to the stereotyped image of 
“Bora’s Vranje” wherein Roma musicians assume an important role. The second 
part investigates the path Roma trumpeters have taken from being well-known 
local musicians to becoming recognized internationally. The final part is dedicated to the memorialization of their contribution. It considers the erection of 
a monument to Bakija Bakić (Vranje, 1923–1989), i.e. to a symbol of trumpet 
playing in southern Serbia, as well as the discourses and practices linked to 
remembering and celebrating this musical form.

Everyday Practices of Gender in the Serbian Community of Post-War South-East Kosovo

AB - This article aims to explore the everyday practices of gender in the Serbian community of south-east Kosovo, in a post-war context marked by sudden and radical political and social changes that deeply altered everyday life after 1999 and the establishment of the UN administration. As family and kinship ties are strongly expressed in the researched community, gender practices have been considered within that framework. This article is based on extensive multi-sited fieldwork conducted with members of the Serbian community in south-east Kosovo, and with displaced people from this region in several towns in Serbia. The field research focuses on everyday interactions and perspectives ‘from below’. The sudden and complex social and political changes that occurred after 1999 resulted in the transformation of the family structure and family roles, and thus to changes in gender practices. With the establishment of the international administration, influences linked to globalisation intensified. The migration of part of the community to Serbia, and the life of many of its members as ‘both here and there’, played an important role. Influences from Serbia, community guidance from the Serbian Orthodox Church, and changes in the ethnic and social landscape because of the war all combined to create opposing processes within the family. In family and gender relations, intensive, oppositional processes unfolded. These generated tensions within the community: the nuclearisation of the family and, for certain aspects, the liberalisation of relations in it and, at the same time, repatriarchalisation.

especially trumpeters, in Vranje residents’ local identifi ation. It especially analyses 
the discourses and practices linked to raising a monument to Bakija Bakić (Vranje, 
1923–1989), who stands out as a symbol of trumpeting in southern Serbia due to the 
specificity of his musical expression and his prestigious recognition. He is a musician 
who has started to forge a path for the Vranje trumpeters from the local to the international scene. The city raised a monument to Bakija Bakić in 2006 in Gornja Čaršija, a 
Roma settlement in which he lived his whole life. The choice of location for the monument (the city centre versus the Roma settlement) was the subject of a polemic, as 
besides being a famous citizen of Vranje, he was also a member of the Roma community. The paper draws parallels with the processes and procedures underpinning the 
memorialization of the Roma musicians Janika Balaž and Šaban Bajramović.

AB  - The aim of this article is to analyze an impact of political
and socio-economic changes after 1989 on the Slovak community
members of Serbia. Serbia, as well as Slovakia, underwent a painful 
post-communist transformation, however, both countries adopted 
a different path of reforms. In 2004, Slovakia joined European Union, 
whereas Serbia received a status of EU-candidate state only in 2012. 
Because of an economic growth and decline of unemployment rate, 
Slovakia became an attractive target of labor migrations from Serbia, 
including Slovak community members from Serbian province of 
Vojvodina. The political changes in Serbia in 1990 and after 2000 
improved the political rights of the Slovak minority members, 
however, the economic situation contributed to the acceleration of 
the de-population of the areas inhabited by Slovaks of Vojvodina.

AB  - This article explores the current migration of the Slovak community members of Serbia to Slovakia,
focusing on the issue of belonging. The migration of Slovaks from Serbia began in the late 1980s and early
1990s, but since 2015 it reaches a massive scale. The article is based on extensive multi-sited fieldwork
carried out both in Slovakia and Serbia, since it addresses migratory situation.

AB  - This paper is based on fieldwork conducted in Bulgaria, in the towns
of Sofia and Pernik. It explores the phenomenon of preferred
identification with the example of Džorevci in Bulgaria. The Džorevci
community is a paradigm of how an external definition –
categorization shapes the internal experience of belonging, with the
result that, for generations, they remain in an ambiguous, liminal
position, “betwixt and between” the recognised ethnic categories of
Bulgarian and Roma – “neither-norˮ and/or “both-and” (depending on
the individual, the situation and the wider social and political context).
In their interactions with relevant others – Bulgarians and Roma – the
Džorevci community is in a constant, long-term process of
negotiation, contestation and non-recognition, doubly included or
doubly excluded – in the narratives of my interlocutors the
predominant experience was of the latter.

AB  - This article explores the current migration of the Slovak community members of
Serbia to Slovakia, focusing on their perception of safety and risk, in the period since
1990 when the post-Communist transition began both in Serbia and Slovakia. The
authors attempt to analyse how the members of the given community, who migrated
to Slovakia during the reference period, perceive Slovakia today from the point of
view of their safety, understood as the search for freedom from threats. They focus
on individual safety factors (life, health, status, wealth and freedom). After 1990,
Slovakia became not only a country left by migrants, but also a country of destination
for migrants. One such migrant group is the members of Slovak communities abroad,
in particular Serbia, Romania and Ukraine. The first wave of migration of Slovaks
from Serbia took place in the early 1990s in connection with the violent ethnic
conflicts in former Yugoslavia, and the next one as a result of the global financial
crisis in 2008, which intensified after 2015. The main push factors of the migration
of Vojvodina Slovaks to Slovakia in the 1990s included attempts to avoid mobilisation
and participation in combat operations; after 2008, the key role was played primarily
by material issues which they perceived as an existential threat to themselves and to
their families. The main pull factor in favour of choosing Slovakia comprise of the
relatively small administrative barriers and linguistic proximity. While our interlocutors
regarded their concerns about the impacts of the 1990s war conflicts as short-term
threats, they perceived the social impacts of the economic transition and uncontrolled
global financial crisis after 2008 as long-term or even permanent threats. In this
context, they consider Slovakia a safe country. The article is based on extensive
multi-sited fieldwork – in-depth interviews with the members of the community –
and on other available sources (legal documents, statistical data, media, etc.).

AB  - This issue consists of eleven papers dedicated to migrations of individuals and/or
communities in Southeast and Central Europe. The concept of its topic is interdisciplinary –
it is comprised of papers which examine the migration phenomenon, combining research
methods of ethnology and social anthropology, sociology, history and political science.
Despite the immense diversity of migration types researched, a significant number of them is, in their different ways, directly or indirectly, connected to the war (the first six papers).
Economic reasons are also at the core of many migrations, and can be, but not necessarily so,
connected to the war and the crisis common in post-war regions. In addition, personal
reasons represent a possible motive for initiating migration, as shown in several papers.

AB  - This paper explores the current migration of the Slovak community members of Serbia to
Slovakia, focusing on the issue of belonging. This is an example of a ‘return’ migration
phenomenon – where a certain number of minority members return to their land of ancestors
after having lived on the territory of present-day Vojvodina for almost three centuries. The
migration of Slovaks from Serbia began in the late 1980s and early 1990s but in recent years it has taken on much greater proportions. This paper is based on fieldwork conducted in
Bratislava in 2015 and 2017.

AB  - Село Бело-Блато в области Средний Банат (Автономный край Воеводина, Сербия) представляет собой
специфическую мультиэтническую среду, где проживают
словаки, венгры, болгары (пальчане), а в последние десятилетия и сербы, что определяет его мультикультурные
(интеркультурные) и многоязычные характеристики.
Село представляется как своеобразная модель ярко выраженной толерантности и открытости. Из-за потенциала, имеющегося в естественной для них среде, жители
села видят перспективы (этно- и эко) туристического развития. В статье рассматривается образ села Бело-Блато
как межкультурной общности и процессы конструирования здесь локальной идентичности.

AB  - У овом раду разматрам методолошке, епистемолошке и
етичке изазове са којима сам се суочавала током мултило
калног теренског истраживања српске заједнице
југоисточног Косова (Гњилане, Витина и села у њиховој
околини, као и међу расељенима са овог подручја у неко-
лико градова у Србији). У фокусу истраживања послерат
ног дискурса нашла су се два вида миграција: 1.
колонизација становништва из брдско-планинских крајева
јужне Србије, која је на Косову спровођена у оквиру
аграрне реформе у периоду после Првог светског рата, 2.
исељавање српског становништва са Косова у Србију
после оружаних сукоба 1999. године и успостављања
управе Уједињених нација. У оба поменута случаја се
углавном ради о коетничким миграцијама: досељеници су
исте етничке припадности као и становништво у местима
пресељења. Интраетнички односи и границе у светлу
поменутих миграција показали су се као посебно заним
љиво истраживачко поље, које је у исто време отварало
низ методолошких, епистемолошких и етичких питања и
дилема.
AB  - In this paper I look into the methodological, epis
temological and ethical challenges I faced during multi
sited fieldwork research in the Serb community of south-
east Kosovo (Gnjilane, Vitina and neighbouring villages,
and in several towns in Serbia where displaced persons
from this area are now living). The focus of the research
into post-war discourse was on two forms of migration: 1.
the colonisation of the population from the highland areas of south Serbia, which
was carried out in Kosovo as part of agrarian reform in the period after World War
I; 2. The migration of the Serb population from Kosovo into Serbia following the
armed conflicts of 1999 and the establishment of a United Nations administration.
In both cases these are mainly co-ethnic migrations: the settlers are of the same
ethnicity as the population in the places they have moved to. Intra-ethnic relations
and boundaries in the light of these migrations turned out to be an especially inter
esting field of research, which has opened up numerous methodological, epistemo
logical and ethical questions.
