AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB - The main goal of this research has been to investigate for the first time the effects of fluorination on the crystal structure, magnetic, and electrochemical properties of the P2-type NaxCoO2 powder. Sodium cobalt oxide with a P2-type structure is synthesized by a modified solid-state reaction consisting of alternating processes of rapid heating up to 750 °C and rapid cooling to the room temperature. The obtained powder is fluorinated using a gas-solid reaction with NH4HF2 as fluorinating agent. Fluorination causes a decrease of sodium content in the parent phase with the concurrent formation of the minor phases of Na2CO3 and NaF. The structure of NaxCoO2 in both powders is refined in P63/mmc space group. The results of the Rietveld refinement combined with the findings from the XPS measurements confirm the Na0.76CoO2 and Na0.44CoO1.96F0.04 stoichiometries for the pristine and fluorinated powders, respectively, which indicates that 4 at.% of fluorine ions per formula unit are incorporated in the structure. Preliminary electrochemical investigations have revealed an improved charge/discharge performance. The influence of fluorination on morphology and magnetic properties has also been examined.

AB - In our recent studies we have designed fullerenol/doxorubicin nanocomposite (FNP/DOX) as the new drug nanocarrier. This research has demonstrated that this novel nanocomposite has had better implications on the liver tissue in vivo (Wistar rats treated intraperitoneally), than treatment based only on DOX. FNP/DOX has been characterised by DLS, TEM and AFM measurements which have shown that DOX loaded onto FNP did not influence fullerenol nanoparticle's size. FNP/DOX affected oxidative status in blood causing a significant decrease of catalase and SOD activity in comparison to DOX, implicating the reduction in oxidative stress. qRT-PCR results on the mRNA level of antioxidative enzymes (catalase and MnSOD) revealed that the effect of oxidative stress is significantly reduced by the treatment with FNP/DOX (p <.05). The ultrastructural analysis of the liver tissue has revealed that FNP/DOX nanocomposite generated considerably less damage in the liver tissue, than DOX applied at the same dose. Hence, our results have indicated that FNP, within FNP/DOX nanocomposite, exhibits protective effects to the liver tissue of the healthy rats. © 2018

AB - This article presents the results of the compositional, structural and morphological study of geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin and an alkali activator. The study involved the investigation of the structural and chemical properties of the geopolymer, in addition to thermally treated geopolymers up to 600 and 900 °C. The precursor of the geopolymer, and the geopolymer samples before and after the thermal treatment, were investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analysis. The corrected average value of the ratio of silicon and aluminum in the geopolymer samples (SiGP:Al) is about 1.46, which suggests that the obtained geopolymer samples represent a mixture of roughly equal amounts of sialate and sialate-siloxo units. Annealing the geopolymer samples at 600 °C decreases the amount of Si-ONa bonds and induces the cross-linking of polymer changes. At the same time, other sodium containing alumino-silicate phases are created. The thermal treatment at 900 °C leads to a considerable reduction of oxygen and particularly sodium, followed by significant morphological changes i.e. formation of a complex porous structure. Additionally, a new semicrystaline phase appears. Both XRD and XPS results imply that this new phase may be nepheline and it is plausible that this phase begins to nucleate at temperatures below 900 °C.

AB - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

abstract = "In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.",

AB - Fullerenols are polyhydroxylated, water soluble derivatives of fullerene C60, with potential application in medicine as diagnostic agents, antioxidants or nano drug carriers. This paper describes synthesis and physical characterization of a new nanocomposite hydroxyapatite/fullerenol. Surface of the nanocomposite hydroxyapatite/fullerenol is inhomogeneous with the diameter of the particles in the range from 100 nm to 350 nm. The zeta potential of this nanocomposite is ten times lower when compared to hydroxyapatite. Surface phosphate groups of hydroxyapatite are prone to forming hydrogen bonds, when in close contact with hydroxyl groups, which could lead to formation of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyapatite and hydroxyl groups of fullerenol. The surface of hydroxyapatite
particles (−2.5 mV) was modified by fullerenol particles, as confirmed by the obtained zeta
potential value of the nanocomposite biomaterial hydroxyapatite/fullerenol (−25.0 mV).

AB - The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on the polycrystalline Pt electrode in 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte containing various amounts of acetonitrile (AcN). The state of the electrode surface was characterized by the cyclic voltammetry in oxygen free electrolytes, while ORR studies were performed on the polycrystalline Pt rotating disc electrode by the linear sweep voltammetry in oxygen saturated electrolytes. The acetonitrile is chemisorbed on Pt over a wide potential range, inhibiting both hydrogen adsorption and oxide formation. The extent of AcN chemisorption depends on its concentration in the solution. Initial potential of oxygen reduction is shifted negatively, while the ORR current is increasingly reduced with the increase of AcN concentration. Complete inhibition of ORR in the potential range of AcN and Cl-anion coadsorption is achieved for (0.1 M NaCl + 1 M AcN) solution.

AB - Ideal spherical nonagglomerated Ni particles (mean diameter 0.62-1.12 mu m) were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of NiCl2 aqueous solution in the presence of 0.1 mass% of Pd, Cu, or Ni in an H-2-N-2 atmosphere at 900 degrees C. Incomplete reduction of the NiCl2 aqueous solution in the absence of additives was observed under the same conditions. Differential thermal and thermal-gravimetric analyses revealed a decrease in initial reduction temperature of NiCl2 from 375 to 275 degrees C by the addition of Pd, Cu, or Ni. The morphology of Ni particles was analyzed using scanning tunneling microscopy. The surface roughness of Ni particles was found to be controllable by addition of appropriate additives.

AB - Ideally spherical non-agglomerated Ni particles (mean diameter 1.10 mu m) were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of NiCl2 aqueous solution in the presence of 0.1 mass percent of Pd in an H-2-N-2 atmosphere at 900 degrees C. Incomplete reduction of the NiCl2 aqueous solution in the absence of additives was observed under the same experimental conditions. Promotional influence of Pd was explained in terms of hydrogen spillover effect. Morphology of Ni particles was analyzed by using scanning tunneling microscopy. Decrease of mean surface roughness was found upon addition of Pd. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed significant increase of hydrogen absorption by Ni particles prepared in the presence of Pd (-Delta H=8390Jg(-1)) compared with the results for Ni particles prepared without additives (-Delta H=108Jg(-1)).
