AB - Single crystal ingot of BiSbTeSe doped with Zr was synthesized using Bridgman method. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis was used to determine chemical composition of studied samples as well as to check and confirm samples homogeneity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements proved that obtained crystal ingot is a single cristal and confirms Bi2Te3-type compound with orientation (00l) of single crystal. Melting point was determined by dilatometrically measured shrinkage during heating. Mobility, concentration, resistivity/conductivity and Hall coefficient of BiSbTeSe doped with Zr samples were determined using a Hall Effect measurement system based on the Van der Pauw method. The Hall Effect was measured at room tem-perature with an applied magnetic field strength of 0.37 T at different current intensities. The measured ingot samples were cut and cleaved from different regions. Calculated results obtained using a Hall Effect measurement system (Ecopia, HMS-3000) were mutually compared for cleaved and cut samples. Changing of transport and electrical parameters with the increase of the current intensity was also monitored. The results confirmed that electrical and transport properties of single crystal depend on crystal growth direction and mobility was also significantly improved in comparison with theoretical value of Bi2Te3 and available literature data.

AB - Starting powders of TiO2 (anatase) and Fe2O3 (hematite) were mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. Pseudobrookite powder was obtained by a combined milling/calcination procedure. Particle size distribution was analyzed on a laser particle size analyzer and correlated with XRD and SEM analysis. The band gap was determined using UV/Vis spectroscopy. Green samples were sintered in a dilatometer and at 1000oC for 2h in air. Thermal diffusivity was determined from photoacoustic measurements. Electrical conductivity measurements were performed. The aim was to obtain pseudobrookite with properties suitable for polymer paste for thick films to be applied as gas sensors.

AB - PbTe single crystals doped with monovalent Au or Cu were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured at room temperature for all samples and plasma minima were registered. These experimental spectra were numerically analyzed and optical parameters were calculated. All the samples of PbTe doped with Au or Cu were of the "n" type. The properties of these compositions were analyzed and compared with PbTe containing other dopants. The samples of PbTe doped with only 3.3 at% Au were the best among the PbTe + Au samples having the lowest plasma frequency and the highest mobility of free carriers-electrons, while PbTe doped with Cu was the opposite. Samples with the lowest Cu concentration of 0.23 at% Cu had the best properties. Thermal diffusivity and electronic transport properties of the same PbTe doped samples were also investigated using a photoacoustic (PA) method with the transmission detection configuration. The results obtained with the far infrared and photoacoustic characterization of PbTe doped samples were compared and discussed. Both methods confirmed that when PbTe was doped with 3.3 at% Au, thermoelectric and electrical properties of this doped semiconductor were both significantly improved, so Au as a dopant in PbTe could be used as a new high quality thermoelectric material. © 2015 Pantelija M. AB - In this work, n-type and p-type PbTe doped with Br and Na, respectively, were thoroughly examined to determine the effect of the dopant on microstructure. Macro and micro homogeneity of the samples were studied by means of micro-Fourier-transform infrared (micro-FTIR) spectroscopy, micro-Seebeck measurements, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/EDX). SEM/EDX observations showed the samples were not single-phase materials—second phases were created by inclusions that disturbed the coherence of the matrix and, subsequently, drastically affected the Seebeck coefficient. In a micro-scale study, local variations of sodium content were detected in Na-doped samples; in Br-doped samples a second, PbBr2, phase was observed in the PbTe matrix. A direct effect of matrix dopant on Seebeck coefficient and plasmon frequency for the Br-doped and Na-doped samples was observed by use of the three complementary techniques.

AB - In this work, we explore possible topological insulating state in bismuth doped with arsenic Bi1-xAsx. Infrared and magneto-optical spectroscopy are employed to probe the electrodynamic response of Bi1-xAsx with x = 0.01, as well as topological insulator Bi1-xSbx with x = 0.20. The spectra are reported in magnetic fields up to 18T, and at temperatures between 10 and 300K. The results indicate strong sensitivity of optical properties to these external stimuli in both Bi1-xAsx and Bi1-xSbx, but also some differences introduced by arsenic doping. Most notably, the field dependence of cyclotron resonance in Bi1-xAsx implies that it is due to bulk carriers, as opposed to surface carriers in Bi1-xSbx.

AB - In this work we have analyzed the effects of Ti doping on structural and electrical properties of α-Fe2O3. When the amount of added Ti (5 wt.%TiO2) was within the solubility degree and XRD, SEM and EDS analysis revealed a homogenous hematite structure, with lattice parameters a= 5.03719(3) Å, c=13.7484(1) Å slightly increased due to incorporation of Ti into the rhombohedral hematite lattice. Higher amounts of Ti (10 wt.%TiO2) resulted in the formation of pseudobrookite, besides hematite, confirmed by SEM and EDS analysis. Studies of electric properties in the temperature range 25-225oC at different frequencies (100 - 1Mz) showed that Ti doping improved electrical conductivity. Impedance analysis was performed using an equivalent circuit, showing one relaxation process and suggesting dominant grain boundary contribution. [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. AB - A simple ball milling/thermal treatment procedure was applied to obtain fine thermistor powders. Three different powder compositions were analyzed–Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4, Cu0.25Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.25O4 and Cu0.4Ni0.5Mn2.1O4. XRD analysis showed that all three powder compositions had a cubic spinel structure. Correlation between the sintering temperature, structure and resulting electrical properties was analyzed on bulk samples. Thick film pastes were composed and segmented thick film thermistors were screen printed on alumina, dried and fired. SEM analysis revealed a typical dendrite structure with small grains and a developed surface area. Thick film sheet resistance was measured on a test matrix and the resistance decreased with increasing Cu content. The temperature dependence of sample resistance was measured in a climatic chamber enabling calculation of the material constant and activation energy. Aging of the obtained segmented thermistors was analyzed and the resistivity drift was 0.23% for the Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 NTC thick film thermistor confirming greater stability of thermistors containing Zn and Cu that in combination with the determined good thermistor characteristics make them good candidates for temperature and heat loss sensor applications.

AB - Nanostructured single layered (pure TiO2 , pure α-Fe2O3 and mixed Fe2O3 /TiO2 with two different oxide ratios, 2 : 3 and 3 : 2) and double layered (TiO2 layer over a Fe2O3 layer) thick films have been fabricated by screen printing technology on a glass substrate. The pastes used for film preparation were obtained by adding an organic vehicle to the oxide powders together with a small percentage of binding glass frit. Samples were dried up to 100 °C and sintered at 650 °C/60 minutes. Structural, morphological and optical studies have been carried out using XRD, SEM analyses and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The prepared pure and mixed Fe2O3 /TiO2 thick films had a homogenous nanostructure without secondary phases. Indirect band gaps were determined from the measured transmission spectra and the obtained values are in the range of literature data. [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. III45007]

AB - A simple thermal sensor system was designed for measuring water flow in the water mains using the heat loss principle with a NTC thick film segmented thermistor as a self-heating sensor. Thick film segmented thermistors were screen printed on alumina substrate. NTC thermistor paste was formed of very fine Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 powder obtained by a combined mechanical activation/thermal treatment process, an organic vehicle and glass frit. The thermal sensor system was analyzed in the static and dynamic regime. A range constant voltage power supply was defined in the range 9–19 V for input water temperatures of 30–2 °C, maintaining a supply voltage in steps of 2 V for a change in 5 °C of input water temperature. This enables optimal operating power, i.e. heat generation on the self-heating thermistor. Measured calibration curves for different input water temperatures and input water flow rates were modeled, enabling interpolation of additional calculated curves to cover a wide range of input water temperatures.

AB - PbTe single crystal samples doped with Mn and Yb were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured at room temperature for samples with different impurity concentrations (total impurity concentration Mn+Yb varied between 0.59 and 2.52 at%, while the impurity Mn/Yb ratio varied between 0 and 3.48). All samples were of the "p" type. Plasma minimum was registered for all samples and varied between 114 and 198 cm-1 depending on the total impurity concentration and ratio. Samples with lower plasma minimum had a higher free hole mobility, with the highest value of 7000 cm2/Vs determined for a sample with the highest Mn/Yb ratio of 3.48 (1.67 at.% Mn and 0.48 at.% Yb).

AB - PbTe single crystals, doped with B, were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared spectra were measured in the temperature range between 10 K and room temperature. The experimental spectra were numerically analyzed, and optical parameters were calculated. Local impurity modes of boron were observed at about 150 and 240 cm−1. For all samples, after FIR measurements, the content of boron was measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Optical mobility of free carriers was calculated and it was the highest for the sample with only 0.014 at.% of boron in PbTe. A negative photoconductivity effect at 130 K for PbTe + B was also observed.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250°C for 2h with a heating rate of 10°C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225°C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - A simple thermal (heat loss) sensor system was designed in a small plastic tube housing using a negative thermal coefficient (NTC) thick-film thermistor as a self-heating sensor. The voltage power supply [range constant voltage (RCV)-range constant voltage] uses the measured input water temperature to select the applied voltage in steps (up and down) in order to enable operation of the sensor at optimal sensitivity for different water temperatures. The input water temperature was measured using a “cold” NTC thick-film segmented thermistor. The measured calibration curves were modeled. Additional calculated curves were interpolated between the experimental curves in fine steps to cover each temperature of input water and can be used for determining the water volume flow rate or water velocity. The realized prototype flow meter inertia, stability, repeatability, and tolerance were measured and analyzed. The proposed intelligent RCV thermal flow meter system will include a smart power supply with range-constant-voltages (auto-range), a simple acquisition card and custom designed flow meter software.

AB - A single crystal Bi0.9Sb0.1 ingot was synthesized using the Bridgman technique. Thermal diffusivity and electronic transport properties of single crystal cleaved plates (00l) were determined from PA photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra obtained using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Both the PA phase and amplitude were measured versus the modulation frequency and numerically analyzed. EDS analyses done to determine chemical composition of the studied samples as well as to check sample homogeneity. Hall effect measurements data were used for the photoacustic measurements.

AB - Single crystals of lead telluride doped with Nd were synthesized using the Bridgeman method. Room temperature far infrared reflectivity spectra were measured for PbTe samples with Nd content in the range 0.2-0.9 at.%. Optical reflectivity in the far infrared range was measured in the temperature range between 10 and 300 K for a highly polished PbTe sample with 0.6 at.% Nd. The experimental diagrams were numerically analyzed with a fitting procedure using a modified plasmon-phonon model. Two local modes were noted and their origin was discussed. Optical electron mobility was calculated for all analyzed samples.

AB - Far infrared reflection spectra measured at room temperature were used to investigate vibrational properties of PtSb2 single crystals. The experimental results were analyzed using a dielectric function taking into account the existence of plasmonionised impurity-phonon interactions. Together with strong coupling three infrared active lattice modes at about 143, 187 and 202 cm-1 were observed. These results were discussed with respect to calculated literature vibrational frequencies. Electrical properties of single crystal PtSb2 were also measured at room temperature.

AB - PbTe and Pb0.85Sn0.15Te single crystals, doped with Pd, were grown using the Bridgman method. Far infrared spectra were measured in the temperature range between 10 K and 300 K. The experimental spectra were numerically analyzed using first the Kramers-Krönig method and then a fitting procedure, based on the plasmon-phonon interaction model, and the optical parameters were calculated. Since the electronic structure of the ionized state for Pd, Ni and Pt is of the same type, and the influence of d-shells is very strong, special attention was paid to the influence of the electronic structure of dopants on the final properties PbTe and PbSnTe crystals. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. AB - Intrinsic resistivity and carrier transport parameters of sintered nickel manganite samples (NTC thermistor grade) were determined using a Hall effect measurement system based on the van der Pauw method. Powder mixtures composed of MnO, NiO and with small amounts of CoO and Fe 2O 3 were free surface energy activated by milling in an ultra fast planetary mill for 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min. The powders were uniaxially pressed with 196 MPa into discs and sintered at 1200 °C for 60 min. Full characterization of nickel manganite samples was done using SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. The Hall effect was measured at different temperatures (room temperature, 50, 80, 100 and 120 °C) with an applied field of 0.37 T and also 0.57 T at room temperature. The activation energy E a (energy of conduction) and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity B 25/80, were calculated from measured resistivity values. The measured mobility, resistivity/conductivity, U-I plots, and Hall coefficients were mutually compared and correlated versus microstructure development and macroscopic parameters such as the powder activation time and ambient temperature. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008.
