The purpose of this paper is to analyze the rituals of the Kraljica, Rusalki
and Lazarica, and other rituals and customs in Serbia and Macedonia (Rusalje,
Ranilo, Laduvane, folk drama Rusalii) in which songs with the chants lado and
ljeljo appear and/or which show isosemic function and similarity of key elements
of the ritual. Although the rituals associated with these names are also performed
on the territory of other Slavic and South Slavic ethnicities, the analysis will focus
on the areas of nowadays Serbia and Macedonia, because they had a significantly
different development – they were not influenced by Catholicism, which was much
more repressive than Orthodoxy with regard to pagan customs and explicitly banned
them; they remained under Turkish rule for a long time, which conditioned a certain
kind of cultural “conservationˮ, that is, longer and more lively retention of pagan
rituals and beliefs, without trying to fit them into the ancient heritage under the
influence ...of cultural movements, such as the Renaissance or Classicism, and also
without trying to transfer meaning and reciprocal influence from art to folk tradition.
Hence, there is justifiable assumption that in this territory, Slavic, but also Old Balkan
pagan rituals, customs and cults preserved for a longer time and to a significant extent
their archaic form and authentic semantics from the pre-Christianization period. The
analysis indicates that they probably belong to the cult of the mythological female
being most similar to Hecate, which unites different aspects of femininity. It can be
concluded that these rituals were probably developed from the ancient pagan cult of
the Great Goddess Mother, which presents the female archetype that unites all phases
of universal life, as well as celestial and chthonic elements, and that the differences in
timing, names of the rituals and certain details indicate the superficial stratification of
the cult caused by the emphasis on various aspects and manifestations of the original
mythical performance.
