Sophiological motifs in the literature of Orthodox Slavs have long remained
beyond the range of scholarly investigation. A chronological overview of these
motifs shows that medieval writers were inclined to complex theological issues.
The Old and New Testament sources of sophiology were the focus of their interest.
This paper seeks to outline the development of sophiological ideas from the
texts dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius to the most typical Serbian medieval
hagiographies. It particularly highlights the distinction between the traditional
concept of the Table of Wisdom and its specifically Serbian variant in literature and
art. Attention is also dedicated to those motifs that illustrate the phenomenon of
divine inspiration, which is similar to the motif of Wisdom. One of the purposes
of this paper is to highlight examples which reveal an influence of hymnography,
especially the links between St John of Damascus and Archbishop Danilo II.
The motif of the Wisdom ...of the Lord is present in Old Church Slavonic
and Serbian ecclesiastical literature through various ideas and its main function
is to establish an association between the main protagonists (Cyril, Methodius,
St Simeon, St Sava, etc.) and the Wisdom of God, i. e. the Old Testament sources
of this concept (Book of Proverbs, Book of Wisdom) or its echoes in the New
Testament, namely in the writings St John the Theologian, St Luke and St Paul the
Apostle. The sophiological line in Serbian medieval literature actually combines
the body of sophiological ideas from the Old and New Testaments, enriching
them with reflections from patristic literature and hymnography.
