The protests of 1968 that shook Europe were the expression of the growing
incomprehension between the baby boomers born after the war and their parents
that strived to rebuild the war devastated Europe by their labour and diligence.
When the new generations arrived at the Universities their struggle was to liberate
themselves from the oppression of the inherent constraints of the society their
parents painstakingly built. The last years of the post war economic boom enabled
the students all over Europe to concentrate on their personal liberation, gender and
sexual among others and to put aside the class struggle of previous generations. The
New Left focused on personal liberties instead of class action. Baby boomers were
galvanized by protests against the war in Vietnam and other form of imperialism
and colonialism. The anarchists and trockysts movements captured the desire of
the new generations that were born into the relative abondance of the Western
European... societies to remodel them to their standards. The main issue however
was that the new generations knew exactly what they did not want and moreover
they considered it imperative that the change should be done immediately, but they
were less precise in establishing the contours of their new world. In trying to create
a place for themselves while singing the songs of Bob Dylan, Joan Baes, and the two
rock bands from Liverpool during sit-ins in their Universities or during more or less
violent manifestations, baby boomers profoundly changed the European society.
It became more focused on the personal well-being, less class orientated, more
liberated and more democratic in the sense of a more direct participation of the
general public in the political life. The issues the generation of 1968 were concerned
became an integral part of the European society but those of their parents regained
its importance with the advent of the economic crises of seventies.
