Periodization – founding idea of history of literature : basic division of Serbian literature
Abstract
In literary historiography divisions into periods possess the function of
constitutive ideas in a two-fold sense: from the aspect of temporalisation of
dividing lines among literary epochs, styles, poetics, and from the aspect of
noticing, understanding, and interpreting common points and interweaving,
transition from the old and familiar to the new and different, that is, from the
points exhibiting simultaneously certain fullness and completeness of a period together with indeterminate impulses of alterity. The dynamics of change
innate to literature thus reflects its developing character.
Matters are not different when we refer to the science of literature, therefore to the history of its founding ideas – in this case, principal assumptions
of periodization of Serbian literature. The first in the sequence is the general
division of Serbian literature into the old and the new one. Within European
framework it is associated with the name of the Czech Slavic linguist Josef
Do...brovský (1814), while it is introduced into Serbian culture by Lazar Bojić
(1815) with reference to Dobrovský. The above mentioned periodization was
not, however, performed by Dobrovský, let alone by Bojić. Its creator, thus
a scientific source – although unpublished at the time – is actually Lukijan
Mušicki, which was convincingly presented both by his correspondence and
by manuscript legacy from 1803 to 1812. Main body of this paper consists of
developing evidence that the fundamental division of the whole Serbian literature into old and new was constructed by Mušicki himself, and that Dobrovský
was the one to present the acquired standpoint to the learned community of
Europe.
The final part of the paper indicates the differences and explanations
springing from the basic periodization of Serbian literature, established by
scholars of its general development: Jovan Subotić, Stojan Novaković, Pavle
Popović, Jovan Skerlić, Tihomir Ostojić, Đorđe Sp. Radojičić, Dimitrije Bogdanović, Milorad Pavić, Dragiša Živković, Jovan Deretić, etc.
