This paper reviews some of Jakobson's main contributions to the development of modern metrical theory: his view of the relation between verse and language, his phonological approach to verse, his distinction between rhythmical constants and rhythmical tendencies as elements within the structure of verse. Special emphasis is given to Jakobsons important but neglected idea of the dominant of verse, worked out during his Prague period and applicable to both synchronic and diachronic problems.en
