The Doors of the Saint Sava Cathedral
Abstract
Unlike the classic worldly art whose essential characteristic is, first and foremost, the
tendency to soothe the aesthetic principles of a specific genre, applied sacred art is characterized
with a deeply rooted intent to tie in the aesthetic quality with the utilitarian matter. Aside from
that, it is equally important that those characteristics are joined by a symbolic aspect. The entry
door of a church would be a good example of such syncretism. A desire for this, generally
speaking, utilitarian object to assume an aesthetic value besides its function, whereby it would
contribute to the celebration of the Glory of God in the larger context of the Church itself, brings
about a development of visual representations from the Old and New Testament which are often
portrayed either through carving or a relief.
