Семантика припева ладо и љељо у обредним песмама из Србије и Македоније
Апстракт
In this paper, we attempt to reconstruct the original semantics of the chants
lado and ljeljo on the basis of a wider ritual context and their use in Serbian and
Macedonian ritual songs, as well as on the basis of vocabulary and etymological data.
The appearance of the chants lado and ljeljo in ritual songs and common elements
of the analyzed rites of the Queens, Rusalki and Lazarica, and related rituals and
customs, indicate that they originated within the matriarchal cult most similar to the
cult of Hecate, which unites different aspects of femininity and whose function is to
revive nature and to ensure fertility. Point of issue is, therefore, about the semantics
of invoking female mythological figures, originating from an ancient cult, which
represented various types of the Great Goddess Mother, and which were called Lada
and Ljelja. The analysis shows that the chant ljeljo, given the meaning of related
lexemes and the context in which it occurs (“sisterˮ, “aunt...ˮ, “older sisterˮ, “older,
married womanˮ, “motherˮ, “grandmotherˮ) had the function of invoking a female
mythological figure whose properties are similar to Demeter. The chant lado, on the
other hand, given the recorded meanings and etymology, most likely had the meaning
“brideˮ, “brideˮ/“groomˮ, and contained the idea of archetypal mythical fiancés, i.e.
love union that contains notions of love as fire and splendor and “Holy marriageˮ.
