The paper revisits the dating of the Typikon of Studenica, a later variant of
the Serbian translation/modification of the Greek Evergetis Typikon. In Serbian
scholarly literature there has been a widespread opinion – especially over the past
several decades – that Sava started working on the Studenica Typikon already in
Hilandar, almost simultaneously with his work on the Hilandar Typikon. This
especially applies to chapters 12, 13, and 35, as well as to the extended version of
the Life of Saint Simeon. By suggesting that the most important chapters of the
Studenica Typikon had been completed already in Hilandar, Miodrag M. Petrović
(1986) sought to demonstrate that the monk Sava had been self-authorized to
act independently within the Ohrid Archbishopric in the Studenica monastery,
paving the way for the establishment and independence of the future Serbian
Church. However, a textual analysis reveals that such a far-reaching hypothesis is
entirely unfounded and that it, in ...fact, distorts the evidence-based historical figure
of the monk Sava, his entire work and the very act of establishing the Serbian
Archbishopric in 1219. In our opinion, the work on the Studenica Typikon began
by translating the Prologue of the Evergetis typikon, because the typikon for the
Studenica monastery was a result of the subsequent reshaping of the protograph
of the Hilandar Typikon. While the work on some individual chapters of the Studenica
Typikon had been started in Hilandar, most of them were completed only
after Sava’s return to Serbia (1206/1207). The draft of the Typikon was completed
in 1209/1210, and the official version, the original, must have been completed
shortly, most probably during the same year (1210, and certainly before 1215).
