dc.description.abstract | The earliest Slavic translations of apocrypha include three texts: The Wood of the Holy Cross, Tale of the Dormition of the Virgin and the Gospel of Nicodemus. The former two writings were translated from Greek, whereas the third was translated from Latin; they all belong to the corpus of New Testament apocrypha. In the following period, known as the Ohrid-Preslav period, only one apocryphal text based on the Old Testament (Baruch’s Apocalypse) was translated from Greek, whereas all the other apocrypha dealt with New Testament themes: Protevangelium of James, Acts of Andrew and Matthew, Apocalypse of Paul, Acts of Paul and Thecla, Gospel of Pseudo-Thomas, and the Conversation of Three Saints. All of these writings are present through manuscript copies in the rich Slavic manuscript tradition of non-canonical compositions. These early translations of apocrypha can be found in the surviving Serbian manuscript copies. Some of the preserved variants are unique among other similar works not only in the Slavonic language but also in Greek. A particularly typical example of this is a version of the Gospel of Pseudo-Thomas in a manuscript copy from the Nikoljac Monastery. | sr |
| sr |
