A forgotten thespian Dragomir Janković
Abstract
This paper represents an attempt to reintroduce into the theatrical, literary
and cultural sphere unjustifably forgotten Dragomir Janković (1867–1942), a
diplomat, translator, dramatist, general manager of the National Theatre, and
theatre critic, eighty years after his last published work. He was, in a word, a popular
personage in the public and cultural life of the Serbian capital of the first half of
the twentieth century. His theatrical activity as a critic, who subsequently became
actively involved as a dramatist and general manager, represents a significant stage
in the history of Serbian theatre of the time. He advocated for the modernization of
the repertoire, revival of the national classics and for the professional development
in acting and stage direction. He approached the issue of stage direction in a
modern spirit. He paid great attention to the text of a play. His closest associate
and successor at the National Theatre was Milan Grol. The said perio...d saw guest
performances of well-known foreign actors and opera singers, and the first operas
and operettas performed in Serbia. His theatre reviews, which reflect the state of affairs and development of the theatre of the time, were published in prestigious
journals: Otadžbina [Fatherland] (1888–1891), Srpski pregled [Serbian Review]
(1895), Iskra [Spark] (1898), Srpski književni glasnik [Serbian Literary Gazette]
(1901–1908, 1941). His reviews are recognized as those that offer a more precise
and analytic appraisal of the actors’ performance.
It was only his translations that were published during his lifetime. None of
his books containing theatre reviews or essays were released, which would now be
invaluable, especially in view of the fact that his work spans a half century, from
1888 to 1941.
A sad and notorious “return” of Dragomir Janković into the public eye took
place in 2000, when his texts were mistakenly attributed to Ivo Andrić.
