Th e paper deals with the role of the volunteers in the fi nal operations of
the Serbian army in 1918. It was written on the basis of published records and
literature. Th e author concludes that there were three main groups of volunteers
within Serbian army in 1918. First one of some 2.000 people, consisted the
volunteers that fought in Serbia in 1914/15 and then withdraw with Serbian
troops trough Montenegro and Albania to Corfu and Salonika. Th is group
suff ered heavy losses during the allied off ensives in 1916 having in 1918 only one
half of its previous number. Th e second and the largest one, numbering more
than 13.000 people, comprised of combatants of Volunteers Corps of Serbs,
Croats and Slovenes that reached Salonika during 1917 and early 1918. Most of
them become part of newly formed Yugoslav division. Th e last group consisted
of volunteers mostly from the USA. Most of the volunteers entered the other fi ve
existing divisions (Danube, Morava, Drina,... Timok and Šumadija) of the Serbian
Army. Th e Danube division with 1/3 of combatants who were volunteers was
their second largest unit aft er Yugoslav division. Th e total number of volunteers
within Serbian army in September 1918 reaches more than 20.000 people. Th ey
presented 1/5 of whole number of Serbian combatants at the Macedonian front.
As a part of Serbian 2nd Army, Yugoslav division played signifi cant role during
breakthrough of Macedonian front and aft er that in operations of liberations of
Montenegro and Kosovo and Metochia. Th e volunteers within Serbian 1st Army
led the reconnaissance detachments who fi rst entered the territories of Srem,
Banat and Bačka regions on Austro-Hungarian territories in early November
1918. Th e same role they got from the commander of the Timok division and 2nd
Army during the entering the territories of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During these
actions some of the Volunteers were involved in the incidents against Muslim
and Catholic population, especially in Bosnia, as a revenge for deeds of so called
“Schutzkorps” members against their families. Th e volunteer movement which
was basically Serbian one, with 95% of Serbs among the Volunteers showed
the dedication of Serbian people from the territories under control of AustriaHungary to unifi cation with Serbian motherland. Together with other Serbian
soldiers they gave high contribution, especially during the fi nal operations of
Serbian army in the summer and autumn 1918
