The Eastern Canon, Slavia Orthodoxa and Serbian modern literature
Abstract
The paper reexamines the concepts of the Eastern Canon and Slavia
Orthodoxa on the basis of different theoretical methods related to comparative
studies and Slavic studies. As a starting point, by looking into the theories by
H. Blum, E. Said, R. Picchio, R. Jakobson, D. Obolensky, М. М. Bakhtin, Y. М.
Lotman, Đ. Trifunović, I. Esaulov and others, the author first points out the duality
of Slavic cultures, that is, the linguistic and literary distinctive characteristics
of the Orthodox and Catholic Slavs. The analysis itself explores the differences
among cultural models and their immanent development. Special attention is
paid to the specifics of Serbian literature in the new age. The author rejects the
theory of historical discontinuity in Slavia Orthodoxa, and the related tendency
to subordinate the specific dynamics of the development of the mentioned
literary community to the Western European model. The roots of entire
European literature are the same, and ...their evolutionary path is very similar. The
differences observed in the legacy of the East and the West were to a large extent
encouraged by extra-literary factors and even though they had impact on the
uneven evolutionary dynamics, they did not affect the structure and patterns of
the process itself. Therefore, Serbian literature and cultural tradition should be
viewed from the inside, searching for both, the general and the special, without
trying to forcefully adapt it to another traditional model in terms of research,
definition or interpretation.
Slavia orthodoxa,
