Abstract

The analysis of the basic names of the days of the week, the names of the days within individual holydays, as well as the analysis of phrasemes and other short linguistic forms, was the predominant ethnolinguistic approach. The analysis of the characters of the personifi ed days in the folk poetry (primarily in South Slavic folk lyric poetry and ballads) and the folk tradition of the South Slavs and East Slavs entailed the application of a literary-historical and poetic approach. On the other hand, in addition to the comparative analysis, both an ethnological and sociological approach were applied in the study of the folk perception of days in beliefs, as well as their meaning in the ritual and magical practices of South Slavs and East Slavs. The consideration of the issue of the contemporary perception of days and their relation to previous beliefs is based on folkloristic material collected in fi eld research by the author in the regions of Banat and Šumadija, in Serbia.
