The paper investigates the conditions under which personal nouns in the Serbian language change
(move) the gender. It is established that the gender movement in the Serbian language is closely related both
to categorical difference and lexical meaning of personal nouns and the levels of their use. Three basic logi
cal levels (/levels of use) can be distinguished: (1) referential - addressmg and designation; (2) specific-per
sonal - participation m the formation of an individual entry, i.e. in the expression of a personal identity, and
(3) general-notional (framework) level - indefinite-personal or in relation to personality (relation ‘human
- ‘non-human’ neutral sense. For the lowest level (level of designation) personal proper names are reserved,
and at this level, besides kinship and non-kinship relational words (such as brat [brother/cousin], kum [god
father/best man], komsija [neighbour], drug [friend]), many other non-proper personal nouns also occur.
Among ma...ny other units which are moved at this level by the ad hoc principle (e.g. “vodicka’/“voditica”,
“vodica’, “voditeljica” > ‘the’ woman, our tourist guide) we can distinduish the ones for which the appelative function 1s available, and consequently there is an acceptance of the ‘normally’ moved form (uciteljice,
profesorice / profesorka, direktorice / direkotorka, etc.) These insights reveal logical errors in outwardly-directed normativization of the Serbian language, influenced by feminist ideology, and they demonstrate the
contradicting nature and lack of purposefulness concerning these attempts, as well as the limitations of the
human mind which would be forced to develop in a language which is normativized in such a manner.
