In 1990s, with the growing interest in tradition and the Church, it came to an increased demand for icons. Icons, as visual forms of prayers, play an important role in forming and expressing religious identity in the lives of Orthodox Christians. The question is: what does the iconography tell us about the contemporary Orthodox identity in Serbia today? The focus of this paper is the influence the church clergy and the market's deiiiand have on the fresco creative work. The mechanisms that influence the construction of modem Orthodox identity have been observed. With the irregular church-goers people the worshiping of icons sometimes takes the form of idolatry. The icon is attributed with magical properties. However, certain iconographic patterns
have the status of idols. Namely, a large number of icon-painters get orders to paint copies of original works. Painters who express the theological message using contemporary visual language represent a minority. Authentic contemporary icons... are seldom found in temples. Most of the people who order icons do not wish to be communicated by the use of contemporary visual language; what they want are copied images from ancient times. Does this mean that the modem Orthodox identity has been reduced to copying patterns from the past?
