dc.description.abstractА traditional problem in the analysis of Serbian verse concerns the me trical role of unaccented long syllabies. Within the framework of a metrical theory similar to that outlined ty Kiparsky (Kiparsky 1975, 1977), this paper offers a precise statement of the conditions under which a long unaccented syllable is metrically equivalent to a stressed syllable in Serbian trochaic and iambic meters. The proposed prosodic rule for Serbian verse is illustrated and defended by a detailed analysis of some characteristic Serbian meters, including the distinctive iambic pentameter of the Serbian romantic poet Laza Kostić.en
