uveo Algirdas Julien Greimas, a razvila Dragana Antonijević.
i implicitno razumijevanje uloge i funkcije zooloških vrtova u Srbiji do danas.
The paper offers a semiotic analysis of the narrative of Gabi the dog and the jaguar in the form in
which the story appears on the website of the Belgrade Zoo. I believe that it is valid to assume that
an analysis of this narrative can provide a window into the ways in which meanings of concepts
such as “wildness”, “domesticity”, “freedom”, “captivity” and ultimately, “nature” and “culture” are
articulated within the context of this institution. The paper is based on the ideas formed within the
field of human-animal relations, as well as on the methodological postulates of the semiotic analysis
introduced by Algirdas Julien Greimas and further developed by Dragana Antonijević. By applying
the semiotic analysis to the way in which an unusual event at the zoo was narrativized, the aim of
the paper is to uncover the deeper structure of thought which underlies the story and reflects and
shapes not just the discourse of the Belgrade Zoo, but the implicit understanding of t...he role and
function of zoos in Serbia until the present day. The analysis showed that the way in which the jaguar’s escape and struggle with the dog Gabi was narrativized, tells a deeper story of how we envision
life within society and cope with the freedoms we have to give up in order for it to work, and for
society to exist in the long term. The way in which the event was narrativized also serves to obscure
the actual problem: the plight of animals in zoos in general, and the Belgrade Zoo (in the 1980s)
in particular, and the responsibility the human animals have toward the non-human ones which
are kept in captivity for the sake of entertainment. It all goes to show that, even in modern times,
the tales we tell of the other animals serve to teach us about humans, while the actual non-human
animals that our modernity has entrapped still remain outside the scope of our comprehension of
our own culture and praxis.
