John Argyropoulos’s Paramythetikos to Constantine XI Palaiologos on his mother Helena Palaiologina’s death (1450) is almost entirely a copy of his Paramythetikos dedicated to the emperor on the occasion of the death of his brother, Emperor John VIII Palaiologos (1448). The latter, it seems, was never read publically, due to the very complicated political situation in Constantinople caused by the deep conflict between the supporters and the opponents of the union of the Churches. The Paramythetikos of 1450, however, stressing the political influence of the late empress, bore an important political message and invited Emperor Constantine to accept the union with the Roman Church in order to obtain Western help against the Ottomans, thus following the same political line that his mother had supported.
