The chapter discusses the issues of the gradual transformation of low-density areas to spaces with predominant tourism function reflected in the expansion of second-homes. It attempts to identify a possible interrelation between the rural diversification process and the expansion of second-home tourism. For this purpose, a sample of 55 small villages in Southern and Eastern Serbia was investigated. The goal was to identify why these villages experience different fate, ranging from those that are likely to be ultimately abandoned to those gradually becoming seasonal “tourist” villages. The research utilized qualitative (observations and semi-structured interviews with permanent and seasonal residents) and quantitative data (official statistics of secondary sources). The findings from the field research enabled the creation of a framework for evaluating tourism development potential and existing rural capital. Additionally, statistical tests (correlations and regressions), in the identif...ication of factors affecting the diversification of rural space, were performed. The study confirmed that small peripheral villages with seasonal vitality characteristics show economic reorientation toward the service sector. Expansion of second-home tourism and initiation of rural diversification process gives a hope that these villages may be sustained for the future.
